Lockout!!!

Stephen A. Smith said on Mike and Mike this morning that the sides are closer to a deal than they have been leading on.

At least it seems they're putting forth the time and effort required to get it done. Hope it's soon.

Too little too late IMO. While I'm going to be watching/rooting for the Jazz once the NBA is back, I'm extremely bothered about how the NBA and the union handled this. Where was the urgency in the summer? Where was the mediation during the summer? Why did they wait until part of the season was already canceled before entering into mediation for the first time?

It's a double-edged sword for me because I dont' want to support the NBA, but do want to support the Jazz.

Right there, myself.

I can even consider not coming back. I am addicted. However, I will not be getting cable service to watch NBA league pass. I will stick with the cheaper online option.

I see updates on the lockout and think "these rich ****s are fighting over my money and don't give two ****s about me". I have better use for my money and each day I'm much closer to telling them to go **** themselves. I didn't see the last month of the season and don't feel like I missed anything.

...I, for one....will be extremely disappointed if this lockout doesn't last a whole year! I think NBA players are the most overpaid prim a-donna's in sports history and don't deserve half of what they are currently making now! But then, all of you knew that already...that is my viewpoint and opinion on the current CBA/lockout!

Here's hoping they can push through to a deal.

Just another thought on what I'd hope to see if a deal gets struck:

It seems unlikely that there will be as hard a cap as some of the small-market teams would like. It also seems highly possible that BRI will be tied to a range rather than a single number. If that's so I'd hope to see this extra part of the salaries that goes into the range tied to (instead of a proportion based on the current contract of each individual player) a proportion calculated by something like:
production measure (such as PER, or perhaps win wages)
plus
adjusted +/- (to reward winning team play)
multiplied by
some factor based on minutes played (to reward players the coaches end up trusting -- I'd not make it a 1:1 ratio, as that's probably unfair to those on better teams, and I might even make it asymptotic for 0-8 minutes per game and 32+ minutes per game, so as not to punish players on teams who have different garbage-time playing philosophies and not to overly reward overwork)

This band-range salary might be around 7-10% of a salaries. While tying this band range to performance wouldn't solve all problems, it would at least give some additional incentive for players not only to produce numbers, but to produce wins for the team. It would reward those who perform the best, regardless of initial contracts.

Favors
Hayward
Burks
Kanter
Jefferson (best shape of his life supposedly)

Despite being a relatively frequent user of such metrics as +/-, I would not support them being used as conditions for individual contracts.

There is already a metric in place: wins--and how much a player contributed to those. Conditions like the ones you propose further complicate contracts and might cause players to focus further on individual statistics.

Shorter maximum contract terms possibly incentivise players to play harder, but it also can have them focus more heavily on individual production. The astute coaches and GMs see though the self-serving production and identify how player contribute to the team's success on the court, whether that team success correlates with the player's individual performance or not.

Love this tweet by Stein: "Initial word to us is that talks ending suddenly because union can't proceed w/BRI stuff without its economist, who won't arrive til the AM."

That sounds like a deal. Maybe they have system stuff worked out but they don't want to proceed on the BRI split until their expert is in the room. You know, the guy who's going to get them that extra .324334256345346345 percent which is FAIR. Not the straight .32 that the owners would agree on right now.

..writes? I'm generally just quoting national sports writers most of the time!

I'm sure that when Fat thy Corbin was asking a question about you, You usually shouldnt respond to a question about yourself! Its obvious that common sense (Which comes El-Natur-el to 98% of people with a brain) doesnt come so fast to you and your kind. But you usually dont ask a question (that has been specifically clarified to everyone except you!) and maybe,,, just maybe,,,, wait for someone "other than yourself".,..........uuuuhhhhhh,,,,,,,,,,,,,, what do i do here?,,,,,,,,, uuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhh,,,,, oh ,,,,, yea,,,,, hu haa,,,,,, TO ANSWER!!!!!!!!! YOU G*& D*%^ PRIMATE! 1 + 1 =2,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, FIGURE IT OUT!!!!!!!

...but did he pick up any basketball brains over the summer? I doubt it. He's been in the league for what, 5, 6 years? Still doesn't understand the concept of the pick and roll. Dump him....and his salary.

IMO Jefferson slowly starting to figure things out at the end of the season. He isn't were he needs to be but at least he was moving that direction.

Starting to feel like the lock-out was pointless. Owners cave on hard cap, owners cave on luxary tax, owners cave on sign and trades, owners cave on bird rights, and just when a deal appears in sights Lebron, I can't doit myself or with just 3 other all-stars, James announces he needs Jamal Crawford of Steve Nash to come play in Miami, just days after Crymelo was speculating that the Knicks need Chris Paul.

NBA is still broke, the lockout accomplished nothing.

Hold on we don't know the exact details of the deals being made. Plus what makes you think that the owners were the one starting to cave to make a deal?
