What's new

Looking for a new team

It's very clear, and I highly doubt anyone would try to argue that the Millers would rather turn a profit than win a title.

Larry H. stated on several occasions that the primary goal of the organization was to be in the black each year. Not sure if he changed his stance in the last few years he had Karl and John, but by then it was too late; the window had closed.

But that's the goal of every professional sports team. LHM was trying to keep the team in Utah. What owner wants to lose money?

Dallas Mavericks according to Forbes:

Current value: $1.15 billion
Revenue: $168 million
Operating income: $30 million

Well I know when they were winning more games they were losing money cuz they were super deep in the LT for a while.

Miller has taken it to a whole new level. He hasn't made money. He's made over a billion dollars.

Wanna back that up?

He bought the Jazz for 14 million. It's now worth over 800. He owns MLM Arena. I'd bet that's worth a couple hundred million. And I'm sure he turn a profit a couple of years. We know he took home at least 8 million last year by not improving the team.

OK, so you're using team valuation, which would probably include the arena. I think we were talking about year-to-year profitability. Based on "I bet" and "I'm sure" you're just speculating about that.

Someone was criticizing the Millers for trying to be profitable. I'm just saying that's a goal of all pro teams and I'm ok with that. They're running a business. I would begrudge excessive profit tho, especially with the sharp increase in team values in the NBA. The question is, does profit get in the way of the Jazz assembling a contender? I don't know if anyone here can answer that without making a lot of assumptions.

The Millers own the arena. Does any other owner own the arena?

They own outright the Jazz. No loan payments.

Their payroll was second lowest last year?

They are top in attendance.

Forbes has Gail valued at 1.6 billion, claiming most of that comes from the Jazz. And none of this includes all the money they make off the Jazz selling cars, movies, etc

We know this guy, right?

Grantland had the Jazz profiting between 14-30 million a year. Forbes has their profits around 30 million a year.

The Millers will never leave because the Jazz are the center of everything they do. And until we stop throwing money at them for a mediocre product...well, don't expect anything to change.

It was at least $10 million, and Miller Co most likely received/wasted zero dollars from the NBA's revenue sharing pool after their decision to not acquire a single asset in the off season. Under the Current CBA, $10 million is the maximum profit an organization can make in order to receive revenue sharing.

They obviously knew they would make way more than $10 million last season so they stood pat and sold a playoff push. They could have been content with a $10 million profit, not including all the add-on revenue that they can hide from the NBA, but they got greedy instead and sold you all a bill of goods.

I get that the Millers own the Jazz and the Jazz are valued at around 800 mil. But again, we were talking about year-to-year net profit, not asset value. The value of the arena is irrelevant. They own the arena because they PAID for it. They won’t re-coup the expense because it’s declining in value. It’s like my car. Plus they have sunk additional money into upgrades and renovations and plan to sink another 100 mil into it in the near future. In any case, I don’t have the problem you seem to have with Gail’s net worth. Larry started in the parts department and built an empire. I don’t really hate them for that.

The rest is all pure speculation. The only known expense is the team payroll which fluctuates from year to year. It’s low now but that will change in the next couple of years. If you want to rely on Grantland and Forbes, that’s fine, but they’re speculating too. I can’t speak for the Miller’s motivation. Do they care about a championship? I think they do, and will be willing to spend when the time comes. This summer will be telling. I also don’t consider our team to be mediocre. Without the injuries there’s a good chance we end up as the 5 seed and we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

I don't know why we're talking about Foye, but I remember it the way Franklin describes.

People were hostile to Foye, RJ, and Marvin Williams because they were perceived to be taking time from the youth and limiting their development potential. In case of Foye, people wanted to see more of Burks. I still remember the comparison people made of Burks to Wade.
I was the biggest Burks homer ever and I was comparing burks to wade. I hated that Richard Jefferson took time from Burks. Same goes for raja, miles, and howard.

Foye however was young and the best shooter on the team and floor spacing was sorely needed with that roster which he provided in spades. I don't remember a consensus hatred for foye. I'm sure a few people had an issue with him but it was not the majority

Bump for the late great Stifle Tower and a man of my own heart. RIP brotha, hope you find a better organization to root for. I may be forced to join you soon, and Golden State is looking awful pretty these days. If I skip over, care to meet up for a game? I know you live out that way somewhere.

Nope. Requested my account be deactivated. I'm done. DL has ****** up this team with draft busts. Ownership has failed to spend money and Lindsey just sat on his hands AGAIN and failed to upgrade the team.

Fighting for a playoff spot last season with the 28th highest payroll and he goes out and gets Mack.

Fighting for home court this season, with Dante and Lyles sucking big time and Favors and Hood still hurting and he gets....NO ONE. The Millers are cheap. They've always put profits over winning. Well, after 40+ years as a fan, I'm finally done.

Strange. I can't relate to folks who can choose their team.

Regardless of how bad it gets, I'm a Jazz, Orioles and BYU fan for life. All three suck most of the time, and if i could change, i just might. But i can't. Simply not a choice- like my sexual orientation. I'll always be straight. that ain't changing either. Thank heavens.

Ftr, I'm not saying it's bad that you guys can choose the sports team you root for, if anything I'm jealous, rather just different and i don't understand it.

Not even if the NBA reinstated the Seattle Sonics? (or is it the 'Super' Sonics?)

How do the Orioles fit into that equation though?? The Yankees are the only team I've rooted for my entire life. I've also been a Vikings fan since I'm 10 and I guess thats when I broke the seal in rooting for other teams..

Wake Forest used to be my favorite team in college but the coach Skip Prosser died and they kinda faded into obscurity(sans Ish Smith).. Now I have favorite teams in all the conferences, sometimes a few. I still root for the local teams and enjoy the big east brand of ball but I much prefer watching everywhere.

I have a whole process on how I chose the Jazz and will choose the next team. I always say I'm a fan of the game first, I could actually be a teamless fan. There's a chance I kick the can do the road til the summer of 2018.
