What's new

Lottery Standings

Early games not helping the Jazz. Cavs lose, but Toronto and New Jersey both win. Ugh.

What pathetic displays of basketball Philly and Boston showed tonight--pathetic! Both fighting for the playoffs, and on the other hand, the Raptors and Nets are fighting for worse draft order!

GSW may win one more game this year. I think they're tanking full throttle. They were subtle about it when they just stopped playing defense in the 4th quarter, but now they may be sitting David Lee.

I was just thinking a few days ago - I'm surprised they aren't sitting David Lee. Ugh.

And possibly Richard Jefferson. I'd really like to be a fly on the wall when these diagnoses are given. The official line on Lee was that his lateral movement hasn't been great, so they sent him for an MRI and found an injury. I may even buy that one. But that Jefferson's knee is suddenly swollen to double its size? Double?

hahaha, i'll help... by saying what i've been saying all along. NJN and TOR have brutal schedules, too, and i don't think cleveland and sacramento can catch them. GSW has at least one win left -- probably the home game vs. new orleans -- that that'll be enough to finish 8th worst.

if they finish with 23 wins, then NJ has to finish 2-5 for a coin toss, 3-4 to pass them. unlikely since they finish with @phi, bos, mia, nyk, @mil, phi, @tor. i don't see two wins in there, especially since lopez is shut down.

23 wins also means toronto has to finish 3-4 to force a coin toss, 4-3 to pass them. their remaining sked is bos, @atl, atl, @mia, @det, @mil, njn. i don't see three wins there, either. bargnagni is out, while calderon and kleiza are day-to-day.

New Jersey and Toronto both won today.....both had games they weren't supposed to win.
David Lee is out for the year.
SAS is a playoff team even without their stars.

New Jersey is the one that's really bugging me. Detroit might get past GSW, but New Jersey loses their pick no matter what they do. They have no reason to tank the season.

i'm saying that it would help the jazz to have an additional asset as they go into the offseason that will define the next 10 years of the jazz franchise.

going into NEXT summer, the jazz will have about 16M committed to the four young guys, plus another 3M or so for whomever they pick with the GS pick, and maybe they'll use the TPE on a capable wing player that makes somewhere in the 5-10M range. so you're talking about roughly 25M committed, or something like 30M of cap space.

do they re-sign millsap? re-sign harris? try to lure a marquee free agent? get active in trade discussions and stockpile picks by taking expiring contracts into our cap space for tax-paying teams (like they did in the mid-00s)? or do you just focus on outbidding on mid-level guys because you can pay them more than teams that are restricted to the MLE?

those decisions will decide what kind of team we have for the rest of the decade. don't you think the jazz would benefit from having an extra asset in their pocket when that all begins?

Well, it looks like after tonight the Jazz will have one pick, so we'll have our valuable asset for next years draft from GS. I would prefer a young player with a years experience to a "asset" in the mid to high teens in a worse draft though.

I think the Jazz should resign Millsap for 5 years, 50-60 million, and Harris for 2 years, 12-15 million. I hope they trade Jefferson and Bell in the offseason. I would like the Jazz to take a year to see young players grow without AJ, bell, CJ so they can know where to go that year. I think we will pick a young wing around 14 that will back up Burks/Hayward and we could know where to go that offseason a little better though. We could know what we should look for when trading AJ/Bell, or who we should target in FA, or we could trade for a TPE since we would be under the cap. I could see how the asset would be beneficial, but I think more pieces and knowledge of who those pieces are, and what we need and how they will progress would be more beneficial.

Today was a bad day for the GS pick. The 2 teams that are the closest to passing GS both won unexpected games. Now GS is in a 3 way tie for 7 with Tor 1/2 game back. GS needs to pull off a few upsets.

That's not likely now that GS has shut David Lee down for the year. :(

After watching the Hornets torch us in the 4th last night, I don't see the Warriors beating them. Maybe they will somehow beat the Wolves. You're right though, not looking good.

At least we'll get our pick, eh?

True. Not to mention that we could end up netting ourselves another pick if either Paul or Al are traded on draft day. Anyway, it will be tough if we don't get the Warriors pick this year, but what can you do?

How does it work with salaries when trading for draft picks?

Well this all could be a blessing in disguise. Maybe we do trade Al for a pick and have ours. That would make it nice to have a pick next year. The only crappy thing is that it might be a terrible pick. Like closer to 20.

I don't think next year we will be keeping our pick again either because its top 12 protected. No way we finish that low next year. That's why I have been advocating tank just this one year because our young guys are going to progress enough to where I don't think we are going to be in the lottery again for a while. Unless there are a lot of injuries.

If there was ever a year to tank it was this year. It also would have helped us with the GS pick too. O well what can you do. It's too late now.

I really don't even see us trading anybody for picks either, so say goodbye to high hopes for high draft picks for a while. KOC has decided this is what we are moving forward with.

This is also something I would like some clarification on. Maybe I am too lazy to search for the answer. Maybe I just know someone on here can provide it right off the top of their head and therefore I will let them.

Exactly.

And they shut Lee down now--ha ha ha ha (semi-crazy laugh)! Man, I can only hope the draft is rigged and Stern punishes these tankers. They need to just start playing the towel boys and girl--they're actually taller than Nate Robinson.
