Lottery Standings

We need the Bulls to be motivated to beat the Cavs the last game of the season. Hence it would be nice if the Pacers can beat the Bulls, pulling the Heat to within a game of the Bulls if the Heat beat Boston. Oh the subplots never end.

This is getting better than Lost, only it will actually have an ending!

Great day!

There is an absolute worst case where GS can still be in a 4-way tie for 5th/6th/7th/8th worst, but the more likely worst case now is a tie for 7th/8th worst. That's not so bad.
The chances improve from there if the Warriors win one or two more and pull out of the 7th/8th tie. Then they land either in 8th, 8th/9th tie or 9th by themselves.

Before the season I thought that if we got this pick it would be in the 12-14 range. It's great that they have hugged the line, and kind enough to give us the best position for the draft pick.

Couldn't be any lower than 8, and it might well end up exactly that. Really, this couldn't have gone any better to this point.

I tried to scan thru the 40+ pages, but didn't see if GS gets the 8th but then ping pongs higher we lose the pick, right? Conversely, if they 6th and someone below moves up we get the pick. Don't skewer me if this answer's already posted or I'll spam the site with inappropriate photos... ;)

Right. Just because they finish 8th or win/lose a coin toss that puts them in the 8th spot doesn't mean we automatically get their pick. It will be up to the lotto balls at that point. Our worst nightmare is the Kings and Cleveland both win out.

I also haven't gotten too in depth with how the procedure works, but let's say GS stands pat at 23 wins and right now they are firmly in the 8th spot. Let's assume Sac, NO, and Cle don't catch them. NJ and TOR play each other the last day of the season so one of those two teams will finish with 23 wins as well. I looked through both Toronto's and NJ's schedule and they both beat GS during the regular season. How do tie-breakers work within the lottery and how is the draft order fall regarding ties in the lottery?

There are no tie-breakers regarding the lottery (only pertains to playoff seeding). Ties (for draft ranking) are settled by coin flip. So a 7/8 tie is settled by coin flip with the losing team taking the 8th position. Then comes the ping-pong balls.

Let's be honest, with GSW's luck, if the pick had been top 5 protected, we'd be picking 6th this year.

There is still no reason to think they can't jump into the top 3 and retain their pick. Be optimistic, but understand that just because they finish tied with the 8th worst record(if they do), that doesn't mean the pick is ours. The ping pong balls will determine the fate of the pick.

you guys are counting chicken eggs.
GS will probably end the season tied for 7th, unless they lose tomorrow. [ edit that - the big game for the Warriors pick is tonight ]
