Lyles' Future?

I am not high on Lyles from the day he was picked. And especially after seeing Booker's superstar potential i was being even more tough on this pick. However now we don't have that good of an option to trade him since he doesn't have much market value. Thinking the best scenario with Lyles should be hardworking him in summer.

He has good skillset, he can pass, shoot, dribble. He has good basketball iq. These are important abilities in todays basketball for a PF and fits our system. On paper he has potential to be a Rashard Lewis. But somehow he always look not strong enough to defend his position. And probably some mental weakness that impedes him being better.( I don't know him much so just guessing...)

I wonder if our staff can do something for him to improve. After seeing Hayward got so much stronger this season, i say why not? If he can make a strong leap next season he might be an important role player, even more valuable if we let Jingles walk in summer.

Still im biased that he will never be the player he is supposed to be with his potential but insisting on him seems like a better option than trading him to Orlando or wherever. Anyone has a strong opinion about what to do with this guy?

I believe this may be the answer you're looking for.

can't work out why the image is so small???

Man he's fallen hard, and I thought Exum was Quin's whooping boy early on.
Be interesting to see what happens.

His attitude must have really stunk to get totally shelved

Darn fetchin Snyder!!!! Take Joe Johnson out!!!!

Joe was brought in for a reason. Lyles isn't playing because Joe is. Snyder is saving Lyles, Neto, and Exum from the playoff wolves. This is the first year in a decade that Jazz fans actually have a realistic expectation of winning. If we didn't have Jingles, Joe, and Boris playing important minutes this season, these younger players do not develop. Additionally, the jazz don't win. Last thing we need is two destroy their confidence to ask them to do something they are not ready for.! Do they suck for not being ready? No. I wanted to drive my dad's Ford Pinto when I was 10. Was I ready? No. Give the young guys a break.

He's young and has time. He is what he is, but the guys in front of him are simply better players at this time.

Way too early to write off Lyles. Yeah, he had a bad year, but he showed us as a rookie that he could play in this league; that player just went into hibernation for his sophomore year, as many players do. Let's see what happens next year.

Not giving up on him.

No point comparing to Booker because Quin rates defense that highly that Booker in our system may not have got significant minutes anyway...

Lyles doesn't have a good basquetball IQ at all! He can't figure a good shot from a bad one and thinks about scoring at every possession. Compare that with Joe Ingles, for instance. Few NBA players shot as poorly as Lyles did during this season in the last twenty years, but he did keep shooting nevertheless. Lyles' head is a mess, basketball-wise. Even on defense, he has not figured out what to do. He is not unathletic, he is not THAT physically weak, but he simply does not know what to to. He's a bad one-on-one defender on the perimeter; a bad one-on-one defender inside; bad at providing help defense.

This is the equivalent of Trey's junior year of college. He needs to get his fatself down to Summer League in SLC and Vegas and prove his worth.

He's 21 years old and still learning his position. Still think that the Jazz should have kicked him down to the D league for a bit of time with Bolomboy to improve his confidence. . . but oh well.

He needs to get stronger and keep working to refine his shot. P3 is going to make or break him. I'm not too stressed out over him. He has time to show something before decisions are made.

With that said. . . The Jazz can get by without him, so if they get a chance to grab another star caliber player (and Lyles is part of the trade) they shouldn't hesitate to pull that trigger.

Has nobody heard of the Sophmore slump? He's young. Give him a break.

But it is too bad he's not there yet. His skillset matches up against the Warriors and could have been an X factor.

Never underestimate the genius of Snyder. He threw Exum at CP3 out of nowhere in game 7 and it was effective.

I'm with you about the sophomore slump, but not the skillset. Sure offensively throwing him in a corner could potentially take Draymond out of the paint on some plays, but defensively Lyles has and would get absolutely roasted. Not even in the PNR because the Warriors don't even run that as much (although they would on Lyles), but the off screens and switching. You can't mess up or you're giving up an open 3 and unfortunately Lyles can't keep up on that end.

EDIT: Actually thinking about it they would hide Curry on Lyles if Quin threw him out there.

He needs to get stronger. It's something he actually has control over. Our trainers are **** at preventing injury; but great at building bodies. All he really has to do is give himself over to the trainers and work hard and he can go from the doghouse to being a contributor.

It's all up to him.

Lyles is a total enigma. I wasn't too happy about the pick yet he went from being useless to improving throughout his rookie year. When Favors got hurt Lyles played very well. Then in the Summer League Lyles is the best player in that league. He played amazing. Then he comes in, starts the season well, and sort of flames out. If he gets in shape, works hard and gets confident good things will happen.

It's not time to give up on him. We have to have patience. He showed so much potential as a rookie and over the summer last year. I think he just lost his confidence somewhere this year. I'm sure the team will work with him this summer and try to get him back on track.

You could substitute about a dozen names into this exact quote. Morris Almond and CJ Miles right off the top of my head.
