How do you know he's not better? Are you familiar with his coaching style? How do you even know Horny would even make a good head coach. At this point as Ty's assistant coach, and being surrounded by Lowe and Layden. At this point it's possible he's damaged goods as a coach.

Why are you confused? jacque vaughn has been an assistant for a long time. He is certainly more qualified to be a head coach than Hornacek. Time will tell who is the better coach but if you are looking at experience coaching then vaughn wins.
Vaughn had a leg up in the coaching search. He finished his playing career in San Antonio and the Magic's GM worked in San Antonio for a couple of years.

The Magic should have put the two on the court, and played HORSE to see who would be the coach.

Pop is arguably the greatest NBA head coach of all time, so obviously I'd prefer Pop's apprentice.

Pop is a better coach than Sloan. Also, Pop is much more flexible with in-game strategy than Sloan ever was. Pop's apprentice all the way.

Vaugh has been an assistant coach for a lot longer than Hornacek.
Of course, Horny was put in the almost impossible position of trying to help AK improve his shot and last year's dismal performance by the Jazz' shooters probably hurt his chances as well.

Didn't realize Vaughn had been an assistant that long. I actually thought Shaw was a shoe-in with the Magic...
He was only an assistant for two seasons. What I think is funny us that every time a new coaching gig opens everybody is quick to talk about Brian Shaw and Michael Malone. And yet, they are still assistants.

horny is sloan's apprentice? he was never an assistant under jerry, so are we saying that just because he played here? by that logic greg ostertag is a sloan apprentice too. and for that matter so is vaughn.
vaughn has paid his dues a lot longer. horny was always a long shot for this job, the type of guy who gets added to a leaked list so that it looks like orlando is leaving no stone unturned.

It also bears mentioning that Vaughn was a rare student/athlete who got a real degree that wasn't in phys ed or basket weaving and was an Academic All-American.
He also managed to play in the NBA for over 10 years without any actual talent - so he must have something going on upstairs.
