Magnitude 5.9 earthquake hits DC area/east coast

I'm in Jersey and was on the phone with my car/homeowner's insurance guy and he's like, "Oh, OH! We're having an earthquake! I gotta go." I'm like, "What?"

That explained my ceiling fan and chandelier shaking. Sort of neat. I suppose anything really strong wouldn't be so neat.

Maybe it's a sign I should get earthquake coverage on my home.
 
Did it do any damage?
When I was in 5-6 Earthquakes I didn't think much of them, and they didn't do much in the way of damage.
Are the East Coasters freaked out by a 5.9?
Is it because there aren't many of them over there?

Just curious.
 
Not sure about damage. I haven't heard of any but I also haven't been glued to the television.

I wasn't freaked out by it. Found it a neat experience. But for those who were freaked out by it, yes, I'd imagine it's because they literally almost never happen (ones you feel anyway; this is the first that I've ever experienced) but I would also think for those in NYC, 9/11 has to immediately come to mind. It might for me.
 
Good point on the 9/11 being on their minds when buildings start moving, that would freak me out too.
Thanks for the info... I always found quakes to be fun, but I've never had anything fall on me or I probably would find them less fun.
 
Well, everyone in the Carolinas goes into panic mode at two inches of snow, so I can see why a 5.9 earthquake would be a big deal in that area.
 
The earthquake was the result of slippage along a little known seismic plate called Bush's Fault.

As all of DC left work after the quake the US experienced a brief economic recovery.

I heard about that one. It was originally suggested by a group funded by Al Gore's carbon-offset credits.




Scientists proved it is actually imaginary.
 
My wife and I were on the boardwalk in Point Pleasant NJ - a mild shaking under my feet for about 5 seconds or so.

I thought it was just from the usual throng of females when candrew walks around with his shirt off.
 
wasn't it downgraded to a 5.8? I know that sounds really trivial, but the funny math they use to calculate this sort of stuff means it's a bigger difference than it seems. At any rate, at 5.8 it means it didn't set a record.

oddly enough, I think they're measured using funny math based on something called a LOG scale!!!

That jump from 5.8 to 5.9 represents a 10 fold difference in power. It's a pretty big deal.

Oh, and Archie... you're going to hell.
 
east coast people are so weak.

Any lil tiny bit of snow and schools and businesses shut down for weeks.
A tiny earthquake and we'll hear about it for weeks as if the end of the world is near.

Meanwhile, other parts of the country suffer from record breaking droughts and floods and you never hear a peep from the lamestream media. Same thing happens in sports. How many more times does Pitt need to go to a BCS game with barely a .500 win percentage while so many teams out west are screwed?

That cracked me up!
