Manners....RIP

Some of you guys are wound pretty tight and need to chill.

And anyone that does something nice but gets mad if they don't get a "thank you" are lame. Be nice to be nice, not cuz you crave some kind of recognition.

This is the exact attitude that leads to the behavior YB is objecting to. I get so tired of this apathetic "chill, bro" attitude I could ****ing scream. My brother pulls this ****. Any time someone has an objection to something THEY are the one with the problem because they need to chill. Since when is it so un****ing cool to care about things?

I hopped out of my car and pushed an old lady's wheelchair across the crosswalk the other day because she was stuck in the middle and both her body and wheelchair were too crappy to get her across the busiest intersection in Provo during a green light. She went ape ****.

So I ask, has decency died? What the hell has happened that **** like this goes on? Are these isolated incidents or am I the one who is out of it?

Yes, every generation is in fact less polite than the generation before it. In the Middle Ages, every person was the epitome of social grace.

Well, the era of politeness and chivalry died out with the advent of the Internet.

Certainly. The is not a case of the nostalgia effect, not at all, nosiree.

You're right.

I hate when I hold the door for people and they don't say thank you. If they choose to be so ignorant, I have recently started to go out of my way to say, "Your welcome," just because. Off the top of my head, I think that more than anything else pisses me off as far as manners are concerned.
Have you ever held the door open for a lady and then she gets mad at you? I have. The woman felt somehow "demeaned." I just wanted to hit her upside her Gloria Allred, Nancy Pelosi, Barbara Boxer loving head. Now I'm more inclined to hold the door kind of back-handed, you now the way you do for a guy? You let go as soon as he can reach out and get it. Unless someone is carrying a bunch of stuff (male ro female). Then I'll hold a door open.

But yeah, I agree with YB85, manners seem to have disappeared. On the flip side, some people are extremely appreciative when you do something nice. I gave up a seat in the airport a couple of weeks ago so a couple could sit together (there were just a handful of single seats left scattered about). They were so surprised they pretty much tripped over their tongues thanking me. To me, that kind of stuff is just common courtesy...no big deal.

Gotta admit though, by the title, I was expecting to hear Miss Manners had passed away;-)

Edit: Just read back thorugh the entire thread. Guess I'm not alone. If it happens again, maybe I'll remember the suggested response...that's a good one.

Your attempts at trolling are incredibly sly. No really.

If I EVER got seen tryin to be polite, I would be run clean outta the hopper crew mo fasta than slug blasted outta a .44 magnum.

The greatest test of character is how a person drives. If they drive like a dick and cut people off all the time, they are likely an ******* in life. If they drive politely and slow down to let people in and stuff, they are likely a really nice person in other aspects of life. I'm serious, it almost never fails.

False. I'm actually the most conscientious and courteous driver anyone could imagine. And well...you all know how I really am.

what about if they generally drive very politely but swear like a truck driver (or sailor or whoever it is that uses lots of profanity) when other drivers cut them off, or drive too slow, or turn without signaling, or annoy them in some way...

TMI, eh, Mo? Hey! Ya wanna drives a git-away car this weekend, eh!?

This might come as a shock to some on this board, but I can be a total dick. Especially when it comes to driving. If I'm sitting in a line of traffic, because I've seen the three signs warning that it narrows from 4-3 lanes and some ******* drives all the way to the merge point, I'm not likely to let them in my lane. You want to merge well ahead of that point, I'm fine with that. But disregarding everyone who moved over pisses me off.

Oh, and I'm the same way when it comes to merging. That **** happened just the other day whilst driving in 110deg heat, through Mesquite. I will pull over and block the other lane sometimes. I love it when truckers completely block the other lane to prevent people from doing it.

I feel the same way about this. There is no way these people miss all the signs. I love it when someone pulls into the other lane to block it. I'll leave their spot open in line in front of me so they can merge back over when needed.

I think manners are dying as well. I was raised to get off my *** and offer my seat to women, old or young. I hold doors open for people. I let others merge. I get after my kids when they talk back to their mother. I think it boils down to people not giving a **** about anybody but themselves.

The one that gets me is when you stop to let a pedestrian cross in front of your vehicle and they walk as if they have all the time in the world. They'll even look you right in the eye and slow down a tad. I want to floor it and run their asses over! I know they have the right of way and I don't expect them to run out of the way but come on, put a little spring in your step and move it. Pedestrians in SoCal are the worst.
