There are similarities, but Smart doesn't have the same explosiveness as Westbrook... which is a big part of what makes Westbrook the player he is.

We need a "defensive player" at our SG spot? Is that what we need? Were we last in the WC because our PG & SG weren't great defenders?
Is that really the BPA at the #5?
So you either take Burke out and play Smart, to which the offense suffers but defense improves... Or you play both Burke and Smart at the same time?

It must be jazzfanz.com during the summer after another miserable season. Gordon is Blake Griffin and Smart is now Westbrook.
What will be the flavor of the week next Monday? Vonleh=Larry Bird? Will Randle be Karl Malone?

So 5 mins ago Smart was the same as Burk in everyway in your mind, now he's just a defender that youd have the sacrifice offense when he's in, instead of Burks?
Do we need a defender at SG? Did we have a poor season because of our SG defense? Are you ****ing serious? We couldn't defend anyone. Ever. So, yeah, we need defenders EVERY-****ING-WHERE.

Kanter would be Larry Bird if he had ballandling skills, more range on his shot, quicker feet, 100x the bball IQ, more than an up and under move, and competitiveness.
Comparing smart to Westbrook is literally the same as comparing kanter to an all time great.
But meh, whatever. It's the offseason. Let's continue to make ridiculous comparisons of players we might be drafting! Only to ultimately be disappointed when that player either isn't an all time great or sits behind an aging vet... Or both!

Still think their scoring prowess, defensive abilities (though Smart night win this category) fire for the game, leadership, can be compared.
And I'm not saying he's westbrook. I guess just see Smart being a top 5 at his position and being able to dominate his matchup. He's not without flaws of course.

The truth of the matter is is that Smart resembles a more athletic Eric Snow than Westbrook.
Just like when people on this board went bat crazy and compared Trey Burke to cp3, I was the one talking too much sense and comparing him to Jameer Nelson. I took hell for that one too just as I suspect I'll be flamed for not jumping onboard the Smart=Westbrook and Gordon=Griffin bandwagons.
If Smart can bring some fire and defense to this team, great. But from what I've read about on this board is that he's essentially a smaller version of Alec Burks.
To be honest, I have no idea how great or poor of a defender Burks is. He hardly got a chance to show it because our genius coach always played a vet ahead of him. I also have seen fire in Alec. How many times did he come in and brought the Jazz back? Sure, he might not be a vocal guy but he backed up his leadership with his game. Jefferson was vocal but hardly a leader.
So lets say (for fun) that Alec is a decent to great defender... What does Smart give us at the 5? Do we really want the 5 to come off the bench for us?
If not... Then is he better than Alec or Trey? Which 1?
