Mathews signs offer sheet w/Blazers (5 yrs/34 mil)

Why, did KOC offer 4 years 16 mil? Link?

Easy to find, since the Jazz front office is notorious for leaking their negotiations to the media.

It's as stupid as asking you for a link stating they DIDN'T offer 4 years, 16 mil.

It's downright dumb to think the Jazz would announce how they negotiated with Matthews.

You provide the link stating he did not. Your the one saying they should have. How the **** do you know they didn't? They talked and couldn't agree.

FWIW I would not have given Mathews 4 and 16 either. 4 and 12 max and 3 and 9 preferably. I said that before this came out and I stand by it. This is too much money for a backup level SG with very little upside.

I wouldn't call dumping Gasol and giving MAX to Gay okay. Idiotic is the right word though.

They got Gasol in that deal as well. It was a stupid deal at the time but they were not going to be good enough to retain Pau anyway. So they got Marc and some picks for him.

Borat, do you distort everything you read in such a way as to make it match your preconceptions?

I don't see Siler sayin this at all. What Siler said suggests that Matthews was asking for the MLE, which the Jazz could always match anyway, and therefore had absolutely no incentive to give it to him.

Whatever happens, Matthews should at least be satisified that he got his "market value," and was not conned by some front office sharpster.

Siler says they told him "to find <offer> from another team". That does not scream like they were negotiating.

That the onliest thang he says, is it?

Nice try, though, eh?

Who do you think is gunna fall for that kinda game, though, I wonder?

I don't see any FA SG's out there I would take over Matthews at that price. Hell, I don't see any FA SG's out there that deserve the MLE besides Wesley. The Jazz will match, as they should.

Ha!

Full line:

"Jazz declined to offer full MLE, and told him to find from another team."

Ridiculous that you think they weren't negotiating.

Why does it have to be a FA? The Jazz have TPE's they could use to get just about any available SG depending on the situation of the other team.

The Jazz have to time to decide if they'll match.'

If I was KOC, I would match. Matthews has some qualities which transcend his raw skill set, and which no amount of money can buy for a player that don't have them.

I don't know that, just like you don't but it looks like Siler is saying Jazz told Wes to look for a team to offer him deal. I also never heard any reports of Jazz making him any offer. Anything we say - we speculate, this is a message board after all. But it sure does seem like Porty did a better job than us negotiating, that's for sure. Fact is, now we have to swallow poison pill if we want to keep him, which would not have to do, even if we agreed to the same amount.

Why? It does not mention any offer they made. If we did make an offer, wouldn't you think Siler would mention it in this context?

Do you know that there is a poison pill. Because it's not just the Jazz that would have to swallow it if Portland offered it. And at this point an offer to Mathews will not put the Jazz over the tax directly so including it would help the Jazz in the future as they could have more money later.

Porty got him signed to an overinflated contract. I would not call that better negotiating. Just having more money to throw around.

Yes we speculate. But you keep expecting the players to just accept a lesser deal because it's for the Jazz. Why would they do that again?

I know I`m far from being an expert on the inner workings of the NBA, but a lot of you rather angry guys in here seem to both be doing the mistake of comparing absolutes to relatives while at the same time living in the past. $5 million is a hell of a lot of money, but in today`s market it is not enough to get anyone much better than Wes - at least not to Utah. If we want to compete we have to build a new team and Wes Matthews is one of the best and most promising players we could hope getting. $25 for 5 seems pretty decent for both parties in this market and the Jazz should match immediately. The best thing we can hope for at the moment is for Wes, CJ and PM take another few steps while we wait for Tomic or get extremely lucky in our search for a big guy. Releasing Wes and thinking we can get someone much better for that money would just be silly.

I respect your viewpoint and yes $5M is not gross in relative dollars for NBA ballers especially with the figures being thrown around this free agency, but Wes Matthews taking up the full MLE with the Jazz having NO skilled big men would show the continued incompetence of the FO. Hoping that Wes, CJ, and Paul "improve" while DWill is already playing at a Superstar level will only ensure he is out the door in a few years. He will feel like LeBron. Losing Boozer means we have post presence besides Paul. I'm not a Haslem fan but he ain't coming hear for the vet min. or whatever is left from MLE if any. We had a logjam at the 2/3 so let Hayward play some meaningful minutes now and try to turn an expiring AK into a good player.

If you end up having to admit you're just speculatin, and that you aint full of insider information, after all, cause ya aint really KOC's brutha-in-law, Borat, then why do you start out presenting your "speculations" as indubitable fact, I wonder?

Exactly. What leverage did Matthews have? None. He HAD to find out what his market was for the Jazz to bump up their offer at all.

Matthews: I want the full MLE
KOC: Based on what? We can go 4y/16M. How about that?
Matthews: No. I know I can get more
KOC: Ok. That's fine. You have every right to explore what is out there. However, we have the right to match any offer so if you'd like to explore what's out there, we'd be happy to consider offering you the same thing.
