Mathews signs offer sheet w/Blazers (5 yrs/34 mil)

Why does it have to be a FA? The Jazz have TPE's they could use to get just about any available SG depending on the situation of the other team.

Using the TPE will be a crap shoot. The Harp TPE expires near the deadline, who knows if we'll get anyone as good as Matthews. There's a good chance we could end up losing Matthews and watching the rest of the season with our **** in our hands. Matthews is a good, young, wing player. It's a good investment to match IMO.

Match. Who would we replace him with for the same kind of money? No one. He should have gotten rookie of the year. Match.

Well you left out the part that says over time it does not seem like a that bad of a deal for them.

We both agreed at at the time anyone with an ounce of intelligence would not do this deal. Yet Memphis GM, who does it for a living did.

If you end up having to admit you're just speculatin, and that you aint full of insider information, after all, cause ya aint really KOC's brutha-in-law, Borat, then why do you start out presenting your "speculations" as indubitable fact, I wonder?

Never said it was a fact, did I? Just something that would make sense. At the end of the day, we have to look at the results. And so far, aside from a great pick, Jazz have not gotten any. We lost good talent already and were forced into the situation where to retain any we have to swallow poison pill, when we are in pretty tight situation.

Why? It does not mention any offer they made. If we did make an offer, wouldn't you think Siler would mention it in this context?

This thing is getting funnier. How could the Jazz "decline" something before a player wants, demands something ?

KOC: Hey, Wes, listen me. In case you or your agent want, I tell you now, I will reject the MLE demand...

Use the MLE on someone else. The Jazz have Harp & Boozer TPE and an AK expiring contract. IF KOC cannot parlay that into 2 very good players(preferably a defensive big and a starting SG) and a serviceable player then he needs to move to the side and let a real GM handle the duties of putting together a team that will compete for a championship.

You think KOC ever made this statement?

He could have said we'll give you 30 cents a week and balloon payment of $1.68 in 2073. Doesn't really matter if Matthews wanted the full MLE. At that point the Jazz were forced to see if he could get it somewhere.

No, simpleton. He could have mentioned Jazz offered partial MLE, yet Matthews wanted full. Instead he said Matthews wanted full, and Jazz said to go look elsewhere. See the difference?

This is not the Millsap situation. With Millsap, the Jazz had three years of data. They had a player who had demonstrated not just an ability to start, but start at a high level. Millsap is also a genuine NBA athlete, and a big man (cue the jokes), and big men come at a premium. They could reasonably project Millsap to be well worth that offer sheet.

Matthews is the opposite. They have one year of data. They have a player who started by default, filled his role admirably, but has clear deficiencies. He's barely an average NBA athlete. And he plays a position where there are always bargains.

Separate the emotion, and this is a no brainer. Bid Wes luck, and spend the money elsewhere on better values.

As they should have if that was his demand. They had the right to match if he got an offer for, and perhaps less if he got offered that. Why isn't that the logical move?

I think if KOC made that statement there was a good chance he would under contract already. Regardless though, it's obvious Porty did a better job negotiating than Jazz did apparently. Typically it wouldn't matter, because we would just match anyway and be fine. But we are close to tax limit, so it was actually important to avoid offer sheet and the poison pill. Do you understand the point now?

Jazz will match. $5 mil a year isn't bad for a starting SG. Wesley has a sweet offensive/defensive game and he's only going to get better. He was a MLE player for us last year. If we don't match who are we going to get to replace him that as the same offensive and defensive game? For years we had a weakness at SG. Wesley is our answer. Pay the man and let him get better with the more opportunities coming his way.
