Who do we sign for our starting 2 guard (Maybe CJ starts buts lets assume it will be one of these guys).

Wes Matthews: We all know who he is. The only questions is his contract. This isn't who you would rather have in terms of talent but for the money and how the market is playing out for the free agents.

Shannon Brown: 44.5 vertical leap(No that is not a typo), Close to 7 foot wingspan, amazing athleticism. Good defender. Needs to work on his outside shot but he is a lot better than Brewer from the 3. Needs to improve ball handling but not a huge problem for Jazz wings.

Roger Mason: Good outside shooter. Getting up there in age. Not the best defender but not horrible.

Ronnie Brewer: We already know who this guys is.

Matt Barnes: Good defender about the same percentage 3 point shooter as Brown (Brown is actually better surprisingly). Can play the 2 and the 3. getting up there in age.

All of these guys will probably get 3 or 4 Million per year. Except for Matthews so take into account Matthews Contract.

FA's that are probably worth a look:
CJ Watson
Patrick Mills
Javaris Crittenton
Will Bynum
Shannon Brown
Ronnie Brewer
Roger Mason
Joe Alexander
Rodney Carney
Ike Diogu
Jon Brockman
Anthony Tolliver
Joel Anthony
Oleksiy Pecherov

These names are from https://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_ylt=Aq_Zy_WPm8IBXLl0UfvhX228vLYF?slug=ys-nbafreeagenttracker2010 and while I realize that some may want to make you puke, keep in mind that the Jazz will likely have to bring in some minimum salary guys. I would be fine with not bringing back Gaines and Jeffers and trying out two other guys from this list instead.

Edit: Sorry for the wrong thread; added to the 'Free Agents options' thread.

Shannon Brown. He's a competitor, athletic as hell, can defend, has the ability to take it to the rim and/or shoot from outside, and has big-game experience. Plus we could use his combo guard skills alongside Deron. My fear is, given our current cap number, he'll cost way too much, and so we'll look to fill out the team with Gaines, Jeffers, Evans, (hopefully) Fes, and one more guy on the cheap.

Barns would give us that defensive wing that can shut down big wing scorers. But if we can get Brown at his age I think I would go for him also.

After those 2 meh.....

Glad you posted but this is about the SG postion.

He can't cost more than 4 Million. And will probably cost a third of what Matthews will cost. The market for players like him is about 12-15 Million over 4 years.

He is looking for a long term contract. I listened to an interview. That is what every player is worried about right now.

Ideally it would be to trade AK now for a 2nd round pick to a team with cap space. Than sign Matt Barnes & Brown.

D-Will - Price - Gaines
Brown - Barnes
Miles - Barnes - Hayward
Millsap - Evans
Jefferson - Okur - Fesenko

Of course we would sign some fillers also. We would be below the luxury tax.

I voted for Barnes. I would like Brown as well. No doubt we would love to keep Matthews but at that price it isn't realistic. I would be disappointed if we opted to re-sign Matthews and let the Blazers off the hook.

If we cannot get Barnes or Brown I would resign Matthews though. I would rather overpay for Matthews than see Brewer on this team again.

Okay so it's reasonable to expect Brown to get a 3 year, 9M offer then? If so, that's 2M more per year than if we sign some scrub on the cheap which is what I think we'll do. Throw in the 2M tax penalty too and that's a 4M difference, no?

Ya he wouldn't cost that much. If he was 2 inches taller he would get a Matthews type deal. But GM's are afraid of his height. But his wingspan is actually longer than most SG's. And he is easily one of the most athletic players in the league. I would give him 15 per year if needed. But I think we can still low ball him and secure him. He is worth to me. We have to sign somebody for the 2 guard position.
Matthews would cost 9.4 Million this year. Only 5 counts towards luxury. So he realistically costs us 15 Million this year. Compared to the other 4 guys we are looking at.

These FAs jump out at me, but I'm not necessarily advocating them - just worth looking into.

Patty Mills (Restricted)
Will Bynum (Restricted)
Shannon Brown
Roger Mason
Jannero Pargo
Ronnie Brewer
Joe Alexander (does he suck or something? he got drafted high but never got PT)
Flip Murray
Anthony Tolliver
Luther Head
Rasual Butler
Steve Novak
Jerry Stackhouse (doesn't he love Sloan? )

Y'know, Shannon Brown wasn't really used in Charlotte. It was after he was traded to LA that he got playing time. Now everyone's high on him. And now it'll cost $ to get him.

So who's another Shannon Brown that hasn't gotten playing time that'll come hungry, like Wesley Matthews, but cheap. There have gotta be more guys desperate and forgotten about because they're never given a chance always riding the pine. That's why I advocate bringing in Joe Alexander to training camp. Why? I don't know - the spirit tells me to.

Someone who knows more than I do tell me why Alexander has fallen by the wayside.

We need a shooting guard. Alexander is a tweener between a 3 and a 4. He is athletic but he can't shoot and he can't guard 3's and he is too small to guard the 4's. He doesn't really have a place and he doesn't have potential to play either position. At best he would become a player playing 15 minutes a night. Alexander became the first lotto pick who they released after 2 years. He was the earliest rookie lotto ever to become released(after 2 years).
He did have the best athletic numbers in the draft but he does not have a NBA game.

Again this is about SG's. Not forwards.

LA used him during there first championship. And than he signed a 2 year deal after that. There aren't many teams going after him right now according to rumors. Shannon brown got paid 1.9 Million last year. He opted out and he wants a long term deal. Websites have stated he wants 2.5 Million per year but a long contract. That is not hard to do.

While I agree with not seeing Brewer again. I'd rather have neither at Mathews' contract.

I just know that if we can't get Barnes or Brown than we will sign Brewer if we let Matthews go. I just would rather not take chances on getting Brewer because I know Sloan will play him a lot of minutes. Than we will have the same problems again. Just would rather take the hit of luxury for one year to avoid Brewer alone. After this year he would get about 5.5 Million.
