Max Out Matthews?

Well, shoot. I'm off the Wes Matthews train. Onto DeMarre Carroll. That dude doesn't have Bird Rights. Lol.

He's gonna improve. Research the flavor of crow, por favor.

I hope he does. Right now his shooting is far from respectable and that was my point.
We had hoped Trey would improve...counted on it. And his averages are about what they were last season. A slight uptick in February (40% overall for the month), but let's see if it holds.

As for Matthews, I say we give him a call and tell him we'll offer a max deal. Force Allen to beat our price (if he does) and screw up their payroll. Payback's a bitch and he deserves it.

I support this plan on Matthews... we can either steal a key cog back or make it hurt for them to add around them in the future.

And we'd only have to clear space WHEN Matthews officially signs a deal. That's when we'd release Booker and renounce our exceptions. We give Matthews 24 hours to consider our offer; he goes back to Portland and negotiates a bigger deal OR takes ours. If he re-signs, we move on to Plans B and C.

Even without bird rights..... the question is whether Portland can go over the cap to sign him
I don't think paul allen is afraid of luxury tax

True but luxury tax is not what it once was. Will be interesting.

All I know is that DL needs to hit gold with this free agent crop.

The tax only gets prohibitive if you are a repeat offender. With the huge spike in revenue coming, you can take a hit for a year or two before relief is automatic. Teams with deep pockets will not be afraid to keep their players.

Yeah I don't think there is an amount of money that we could throw at Matthews that would make it too hard for Porty. I just think we make a big offer with the worst case scenario that they have to keep him at a higher price and it limits their flexibility. Is there a restriction on how many max players you can have? What would the max for matthews be?

I don't know why, but I think we have a decent chance of swiping Carroll from the Hawks.

.... at least better than our odds of getting some of the other names mentioned.

I think we could provide him a little more offensive opportunity, but the hawks are pretty healthy cap wise right now. I guess it depends how much they have to pay for millsap. If both offers were equal and we can provide some more offensive opportunity then maybe.

Hopefully DL goes hard and a couple of them as contingency plans. Like Matthews, Carroll, Middleton and Green. He has to land one to make the Kanter trade look better. Next year it's time to start winning.

So it's hard for them to add around him but we still want him at that price? Seems like a bad strategy to me. Especially with the players of our own we will be trying to keep. Sorry I'm not that high on Mathews.

He's really good and we'd be fine cap wise.

For now we'd be fine. In the long run giving a max to Mathews is a bad idea IMO. And I think it will take close to that to get Portland not to match.

We'd be fine later too... I'm not sure what his max would be, but I'd offer him 15 M per and see if I could front load it a little. I know we can't do a heavy front load anymore but I'd still try to make it decline a bit.

We just need to be involved so that they have to pay a ton to keep him. I do think if we signed him burks would eventually be moved.

Wes is really unique player... He shoots a ton of threes at a very high percentage. He's amongst the league leaders and he's a really good defender. Add I'm that he is a vet leader and I absolutely think it'd be a good deal.

Either Matthews or Carroll would be great.

If I consider age and price, then I think I might prefer Carroll a bit more. I also like the defensive impact that DeMarre can have over Wes' (DMC can guard bigger wings much more comfortably, which I think is important to the jazz's current skill set).

Only question I would have with Carroll is that is he a player that can help create space or is he just a player who benefits from space.

Either way, we could use him. There's enough space for him already, and I get the sense (from watching the games) that he's much better at creating space than he was during his time in Utah (when our offense was ridiculous in respect, anyway).

DMC could be expendable if Atlanta wants to keep Paul. Only question would be who starts. I guess Burks gets sent to the bench.

figuring out who starts is a bridge that'll get crossed when it needs to. Sign DeMarre.
