Game Thread May 23, 2021 07:30PM MT: Jazz vs. Grizzlies - Game 1

Added to Calendar: 05-23-21

Medical staff has some ‘splaining to do. And I really wish all of our other guys sounded a little less soft about the Mitchell situation, honestly. You’re the #1 seed. Don’t get “thrown off” by a player being out. Step up.
Mitchell is our best offensive player. I think some of you are forgetting how damn dynamic he is. He’s a top offensive talent in the league. Losing your best offensive weapon minutes before a game should throw people everyone off. That’s sorta why you don’t **** up like this. Imagine if the 97 Jazz team announced mins before a game that Malone wasn’t going? Or the 2007 team that Dwill wasn’t going? Cmon guys

I don’t understand this mentality. The 8th seed isn’t dog meat and we aren’t the 73 win warriors. Memphis took out the Spurs, Warriors, and Jazz all in one week. That’s not something to just take lightly. The 8th seed in the west is probably a top 4 seed in the East. It’s the playoffs, all hands on deck.

I mean, right there (the part I bolded) should indicate why tonight was a ****-show. Utah was coming off a decent break to catch their legs and Memphis had to face a pretty strong gauntlet even to get here - including a very emotionally overtime victory over Golden State. The fact they came and out-played Utah is not a good sign.

This isn't a traditional 1/8 game - but because the Jazz had a significant advantage that you don't normally see with even one-seeds in the playoff (that advantage being they were playing a team who had to win two extra games to even get there).

“I wish we could stop a guard on a hot streak.”

Something I’ve said at least 40 times in the last 2 seasons

And its not like Mitchell was playing these past few games and suddenly was absent tonight. Jazz have won games recently even without him. So it shouldnt have thrown them off that much. But that said the medical staff goofed up a bit by giving indications that Don will be ready for game 1 and making the decision just hours before the game. The team should have been mentally prepared all along to play without Don,, so that if Don did suit up it would be like a pleasant surprise and if he did'nt then it will be business as uusual.

Yeah everything that could go wrong went wrong and we really should have won. I'm not worried yet.

I'm glad you added that yet at the end.

But I have a really bad feeling we'll be heading into game five down 3-1.

I think Bogey and Favs were our best players tonight. Conley was decent. But other then them two. No one really played well. Rudy was soft. Clarkson was terrible. Niang was ok. Ingles was passive. O’Neil was a Moron. And Donovan was hurt. That about sums it up.
Conly Favors an Rudy played well most of the minutes they played. Bogey was Great in the 4th but totally sucked for the first 3 qtrs.

Yeah.

it would have been one thing if Mitchell was probable yesterday and then eventually deemed out. It would also have been one thing if the players were at least clued in that Mitchell might not play.

But nope, he wasn't listed on the injury report at all yesterday and evidently the team was fully under the impression he was going to play.

The medical staff colossally screwed up, and it may very well have cost us a playoff game. Good job idiots.

1) Donovan didn't play.
2) Rudy was in foul trouble when the game turned.
3) The Jazz missed a ton of shots and weren't in any rhythm offensively.

Overall, the Jazz didn't look well prepared for this game, starting with Donovan being a late scratch, and not having a defensive scheme for Morant and Brooks. Probably not knowing who the opponent was until late on Friday evening limited the Jazz's preparation.

I think also not having a single clue that they'd be without their star player until hours before tipoff also threw a wrench in their preparations.

I don't remember what thread it was so I can't dig it up... but someone posted a couple days ago about the jazz making it look like DM would play all week but pull the plug at the last minute to throw the Grizz or Warriors off for game one. Now that that happened, everyone is pissed.....?

Like, they were stuck on 17 for ****ing ever. We built a big lead. I was sure we’d drop the hammer.

Terrible shooting and even worse turnovers. Couldn’t believe what had just happened by halftime. So many plays that might have been the turning point. We let them believe.

The wait until Wednesday is going to be AWFUL after that performance. Such a long gap between games.

And even if we win that one by 50, Memphis is going back home feeling pretty damn good to get the split.

I will not be able to flush this sour taste until we win in Memphis and take control of home court back.

Some of you are in shambles after we lost by 3pts while playing without Mitchell, shooting like crap, turning ball over like some junior team, Gobert being in foul trouble most of the game and Memphis playing really well. Just watch Brook reverse to his chucker mode and shoot like 4-20 next few games and after we win 4-1 or 4-2 at worst nobody will remember this game. Memphis is a scrappy team and plays with passion but that will get you only that far. Jazz ball movement generated tons of open shots this game - we just missed. It it not going to last. Talent and experience is on our side. It will be ok.
