Game Thread May 26, 2021 08:00PM MT: Jazz vs. Grizzlies - Game 2

Added to Calendar: 05-26-21

I suggested trading for him this offseason using expiring contracts and many were not with it at all. Not that they would have but having his perimeter defense with Rudy’s rim protection would be fun.
If we trade for him then we better get rid of one of our slow non athletes. I don't want this roster to be less athletic even if it means it's more skilled.

I guess the way I'm seeing it is if the Jazz really are one of the best teams in the NBA, as their record tells us they should be, they should win at least one game in Memphis. Title contenders know how to win on the road. If they can't get one win in Memphis, they weren't going far in the playoffs anyway, even if they had won game one.

The two best teams in Utah Jazz history did something no other Utah team has ever been capable of and that's win away from SLC multiple times.

In 1997, the Jazz HAD to beat Houston in game six on the road. I'm not sure if they lose that game that they don't choke vs the Rockets in game seven.

The Jazz then had to win again in Houston a year later in an elimination game after falling behind 2-1 in a best of five. They then got a big game four win against the Spurs in SA during a ridiculously close series (Jazz only won the first two games by a combined four points and then got blown out in game three before that game four win) and eventually swept the Lakers in the WCF. Even winning game five in Chicago was impressive.

If they can't win one or two in Memphis, this team was never going anywhere.

Our deep bench must really be garbage according to Quin for the lack of action they have seen so far in this series.
To me having a deep bench doesn't mean you find a way for everyone to get minutes. It means that if someone in your 8-man rotation is down or out then the guys behind them aren't complete garbage and can give you some good minutes as needed. But this is the playoffs, and you have to have your best players on the floor longer, so by definition there are some guys that just won't get time except in very specific or extraordinary situations, like someone fouling out early or being out due to injury.

I think they win both in Memphis then come home and finish them in game 5

I was driving home last night at about 11:45pm and I heard an interview on 1280 the zone with gobert and they were asking him about guarding Morant and he said something like, we do our best to guard him and have a good gameplan but, f**k it, sometimes he just makes shots even when we play good defense.

Wasn't even beeped out. He said f**k it right on the air with no censoring. I was laughing.

There is a small chance I misheard it due to his accent but I'm pretty damn sure he said it.

Well, I've always wondered why some songs on the radio blatantly have the F word, like "Jeremy" from Pearl Jam or, much worse, "Stupify" from Disturbed, but then some songs get heavy edits. The worst of all I believe is "What It's Like" by Everlast that has some edits that bleep out "green," "chrome 45," and other meaningless words.

We don’t need his offense though we need his defense. I’m not talking about the whole game I’m saying give Royce a few minutes away from morant and just see how well he can defend him. Because last night was a morant buzz saw. We need to try something otherwise they will win this series.
He also fouls a lot and turns the ball over. There are things to the game beyond the simplicity of "offense" or "defense".

In Oni's case, he hasn't exhibited greater consistent net positives to warrant playoff time given the risks he carries. If he was an ace defender or if there was any question as to who belonged in the rotation, maybe this idea would carry merit, but there isn't any question, and Oni's defense is more theoretical than material.

I'd rather play Forrest than Oni. Neither player is spacing the court at all but at least Forrest can handle, collapse the defense, and make a good read.

But neither of them should be playing at all in this series.

I agree with the first part. The second part I think he should get 2-3 minutes here and there.

why is it that the opposing guard always goes the **** off on the jazz every playoff series?
last year freakin murray now morant.

Agreed
Forrest is a stud other than that outside shot. Which is terrible. Everything else about his game is awesome

This game showed us Ja and Valanciunas can't guard Mike and Rudy on Pnr. This has a lot to do with Mikes ability to quickly process things. It was unstoppable! But also i worry about Mike guarding Ja on the other end. We need to help him.

This has been discussed numerous times since we even had rumors of trading for Conley. This was our achilles heel last year and we did nothing in the off-season nor at the trade deadline to address it. I think it'll end up being what takes us down if or when we lose a series. We have no one to lock down, hell or even slow down, strong opposing wings/guards.

These guys have to learn to stay in front of their man at least. Revolving doors on the perimeter won't cut it.

And why the **** did we continue to fight over screens that just allowed Morant to go exactly where he wanted to go? Go under the damn screen and force him to take jump shots. He's not a good shooter.

This is another reason I feel QS is overrated. I think he's decent at making adjustments at the half or quarter or even been games, but he is so rigid he is really bad at making live reads and adjusting to it on the fly. Instead we give up a 43-point quarter getting slaughtered fighting over screens and sitting Gobert and Mitchell too long, but he makes a good adjustment between quarters and we luckily executed the plan and won. It didn't work so well in the first game where we made the adjustment but didn't execute and lost.

I just mean we should throw more than one guy at Morant. That's all haha
