Michigan Man Still Receives Food Stamps After Winning $2 Million Jackpot

Obviously it's a loophole that should be closed. This one-off (unless there are multiple lottery winner food-stamp recipients in Michigan) is not an indictment of food stamp programs in general

Agreed.

But the reality is that, as previously stated, average household income for families receiving benefits under SNAP was $711 per month.

And that's not even including the income that people hide from Social Services.

Government audits typically find fraud accounts for between 1 and 3% of overpayment or non-eligible payments. The US Department of Labor estimates the actual rate at 1.9%. Those numbers are relatively static across Western countries. The UK, for example, estimates 1% of its payments are fraudulently obtained.

There's a handful of localized high numbers that are frequently cited by Conservatives trying to claim that fraud is out of control, such as a survey in San Diego County that had a new applicant fraud rate reported at 24%, of course nearly all of those applicants were denied because fraud was detected and never received an actual check, but that's the number the "welfare queen" crew rolls with anyway.

I love anecdotal evidence because it is funner to argue and anything that bugs kicky is a good thing imo.

I watched a lady with about 8 kids pay for groceries in food stamps the other day. At least 4 of her kids had cell phones, all of them iphones. She had an EVO and her oldest kid (maybe 15) was playing on an ipad. Interesting to say the least.

My wife's cousin is on food stamps and welfare and proud of it. She works for a real estate office making about $15 per hour for 30 hours per week, paid under the table. Her live-in boyfriend/common-law husband works construction, and surprisingly in this economy still has a job paying about $20 per hour. They have 3 kids and live in a 3500 sq ft house. They have 2 cars and a brand new huge truck. They have 4-wheelers, jet skis, and a boat. He collects Kimber handguns, and has about 6 (it is where I first shot a Kimber and decided I wanted one). She brags that counting food stamps and other welfare they get almost 1/4 of the amount they make in a year on top of their salaries from the government, which indirectly, and kind of directly, pays for their toys. She was bragging to my wife on FB the other day about their new 65" 3D LCD TV they bought by selling foodstamps for a few months to save up the money. She said they are moving the 60" plasma it is replacing, which they also bought with foodstamps, to their bedroom and giving their 50" plasma to the kids in their play room for their xbox and PS3 and wii.

The problem with anecdotal evidence is it drives perceptions (and gossiping spreads the perception). And, sadly, perceptions often are enough to drive the vote and thereby public policy.

While I'm against food stamp abuse, I find it funny that people get outraged about the poor gaming the system but it really doesn't bother anyone with CEOs of large companies rip off the public to the tune of billions.

You people are arguing over freaking food stamps.

Are there extreme cases of fraud? Sure. But no system is perfect.

What's hilarious is why so many of you think that we'd be "better off" without them. If a family orientated Christian society largely based on small farms and cheap land couldn't support its own population, what makes you think a family neglectful society full of heathens and large corporations would somehow be able to now? Meaning, food stamps weren't just created to be annoying. They were created because obviously the previous system wasn't working.

What's most hilarious to me is how so many conservatives get up in arms over planned parenthood, teachers, police officers, and food stamps yet not a peep over tax cuts, CEOs (who are making record bonuses), wall street execs, and oil subsidies for the poor ol oil companies (making record profits).

You people need to think instead of accepting everything the talking box tells you.

I believe most stats show poor people to be significantly more obese than non-poor people. Perhaps cutting the food stamp program would actually be beneficial to their overall health. Particularly since it would morally reprehensible to take their cell phones, satellite dishes and computers away.

A Michigan man who won $2 million from a state lottery is reportedly still eligible to receive food stamps.

Leroy Fick of Bay County, Mich., said in an interview with WNEM-TV that he still uses his bridge card at stores despite winning a jackpot on "Make Me Rich!" last June.

"I even called them and asked about the bridge card and (the Department of Human Services) said you can go ahead and keep it if you want to," Fick reportedly told the station.

Fick claims he paid more than half of his winnings in taxes -- leaving him about $850,000 -- according to the station.

State Department of Human Services spokeswoman Gisgie Gendreau told MyFoxDetroit.com that under federal guidelines, lottery winnings are not counted as income if a person receives a lump-sum payment.

Nearly 1.9 million Michigan residents are enrolled in the food assistance program. More than 805,000 are children, according to the Detroit Free Press.

In 2009, the Office of Inspector General investigated more than 2,600 food assistance complaints, finding more than $5 million in fraud.

I always thought there was a resource limit for this type of thing.

Defend your government, liberals.

I am a firm believer that we should do away with the assistance programs and instead just start eating the poor. Soylent Green mmmmmmmm.

Here in Utah I see WIC and Utah Horizon.

WIC = Very stringent regulations on what a person can and can't buy with their govt benefits. You deviate at all from the guidelines and you are denied. I LIKE THIS!! One cannot use their govt assistance for whatever the hell they like. They have to buy exactly what they are allowed under the program.

The Horizon program is absolute ********. I have witnessed the Horizon card being used in 7-11 for Jalapeno Rollers and Slurpees. That's a nutritious need that has to be met.

In Smith's the Horizon card is used for ice cream, Ding Dongs & Coke. Whatever the hell you want. And that's just the portion that they figure you shouldn't be able to take out in cash. The rest the card possessor can withdraw in cash and use for whatever the hell they want including their next high.

You really can't make this stuff up.

Of course not. I got tigers blood. Freaking winner. I tell everyone the truth that no one has the balls to say.

Oh, by the way, do you have any actual facts? You know, like any evidence that supports your claim that people on food stamps are indeed more obese due to gluttony? Any evidence to support your claim that these people waste away their limited salary on conveniences which they could leave comfortably without?

Or are you just blowing more junk out of your rear? Typical

Tell me, do you honestly argue that human nature dictates that if something is offered up for free that they'd turn it down for the more difficult route?

If you tell me otherwise it will just prove what I have thought of you for quite a while. You are a ****ing liar.

Tell me, do you honestly argue that human nature dictates that if something is offered up for free that they'd turn it down for the more difficult route?

Tell me, do you honestly argue that eliminating food stamps would:

#1 Stop all abuses of our society?
#2 Put a dent in our national debt?
#3 People be bailed out by local churches, charities, and family members?
#4 Society, as a whole, would be better without food stamps?

It's okay if you don't respond and disappear from this thread altogether. I understand

And to answer your question, I believe that the majority of Americans do not want to have food stamps. The majority of those on food stamps, are working for and have the desire to, buy for themselves. Are there some abusing the system? Absolutely. But there are tons of wall street execs and bigtime CEOs that are abusing our system too. And at a much higher price to our government and society. Yet, conservatives give them high fives and back them up with policies and programs.
The current tax cuts and subsidies to big oil are nothing more than food stamps and welfare for the rich.

Damn it, now if you excuse me, I have my 6th mansion to buy.

Tell me, do you honestly argue that eliminating food stamps would:

#1 Stop all abuses of our society?

No. There's always an ******* willing to abuse the system.

So we should just ignore bad behaviour because it makes no difference in the bottom line?

Why not? It worked pretty well up until The New Deal.

SuperDumbass said:

YES!! When society knows that if they fail, govt will be there to bail them out they quite trying. In fact, they try to fail to get the govt benefit. I know of women that purposefully get pregnant and have kids because they will get more money every month.

Understand this. You are flat out WRONG!!

I consider myself to be more on the conservative side of the isle, but come on people. Do away with food assistance programs? With any insurance or assistance program there will be fraud, private or public. No way of getting around it. The vast majority that use these programs NEED them though. Yes, we can always argue that they can get a better education and job, stop spending $ on computers, smart phones, and cars, etc etc etc... but come on. Is it a 4 year olds fault that mom has mental health issues that have kept her from getting or keeping a decent job? Is it the old man's fault that his retirement was decimated by the economic meltdown after working hard for 40+ years?

I also think it's hilarious that some are arguing that starvation wouldn't increase without food stamps. How is that logical?

I too have seen the frivolous use of Horizon cards while in the check out lines... expensive steaks, junk food, soda, etc etc etc. But I have also seen more examples of people buying bread, cheese, lunch meat, roasts, cereal, milk, and vegetables.

Why not? It worked pretty well up until The New Deal.

LOL!!!

Alright alright. You win. I give up.

There's no reason to argue with someone who believes this mantra.

Lets cut all food assistance programs. But lets remember, even if everyone on food stamps were eating sushi every single day for the rest of their lives. It still wouldn't come close to the amount of money spent on one year of oil subsidies.

But that's okay, it's just easier to blame old people and poor people on everything.
