Tony has been wrong before. He thought there was no chance in hell we were going to sign Shaq either.

He is not someone who speculates much and I don’t blame him. That also means take what he says regarding speculation as just opinion.

He is top notch at reporting after something happens though. Great articles and insight.
 
Another thing to think about with the new revenue and such... do we think the new tv revenue and bigger local TV deals aren’t factored into the acquisition price of the team. Do we think they all skipped over that and Ryan was like “can’t believe I’m buying this at a 25% discount... Millers is dumb AF.”

Those things aren’t some big found money bonus... those were part of the original deal and baked into the purchase price. He didn’t find $20 in his Jean pocket.

Ain’t bagging on him... just saying he’s not always spot on. I also do t think he knows what their walk away price is... so saying they want him back is true... it is also not super insightful.

Tony is absolutely terrible, dude is super negative when it comes to the Jazz and legit was rooting against us in the playoffs. Dude is a Knicks fan that's forced to cover the team, would love if the Athletic moved on from him and let him cover the Knicks, just don't think he's up to par for NYC.

Root against us? I don't think so. Tony tries to play it cool. As much as he wants to pretend he's dispassionate, the Jazz's success is also his success, and if the Jazz suck it also limits some opportunities for him. Plus I think he likes a lot of the guys. Look, I'm not a Spurs fan (especially when they went undefeated against us for what felt like a decade), but eventually I got to the point where I did like them. And while I'm not a Suns fan, I definitely want to see them bump LAC. So while Tony might "not be a fan," I think he's definitely rooting for us, though he'd claim otherwise as some kind of feigned professionalism. He's been a huge fan of the FO (I think a lot of this is Knicks trauma) and I'd be super happy for Tony if DL found a spot in NY.
 
If I was a billionaire, and owned my favorite team which had a small window to compete for their first ever title, I would probably spend as much as it took.

I'm guessing we are more future minded and try to be a little more fiscally conservative than that, but that's how I would view it.

Tony is fine. He doesn't speculate much... he's more of an observer imo. He reminds me of Perd from Parks and Rec. Kinda states the obvious... I think Andy is better but he's also very clearly a passionate Jazz fan.

I would too but that doesn't mean you spend recklessly. Keeping Favs is helpful but if we can save $30M and get 75% of that help from Udoka or a vet minimum... I'd save the money. If there is a side benefit of being able to increase the stock of a young asset... even better.

If it costs us assets (that we don't really even have) to get off of Favs money then I'm good rolling with Favs. If either Udoka or Favs landed us a player we could use at another position that'd be helpful.

If you walk away from the table from Conley because he wants $20M and you only want to give $15M ... then that sucks for us.

I just think you have to be a little reasonable here.

I mean, if I owned the Jazz I would move them to the East coast, just so I don't have to stay up so late to watch them, so it's probably a good thing I'm not the owner.

I think we already know that Ryan Smith won't just spend recklessly. For example we had the BAE to spend last year and left it on the table.

Its another piece of evidence to me that DL really wasn't gonna go into the tax and then realized it was too late because he messed up (or ignored) the math.
