Milking the gravy train

Trey Burke.
I love me some Trey Burke, too, but if he was really our point guard of the future, don't you think it would be hard to pick him with a playoff team's pick? The last time we wanted a point guard in that range, we were settling for D-Will's backup, Eric Maynor.

And that draft was loaded with PGs.

I guess some pretty good PGs went late that year (Lawson and Holliday), so maybe it could be that way again. It's just hard not to question.

Well we'll have our pick which is currently #19 and GSW pick which is #18. Burke is projected to be around #14 - #18, so there may be a chance to move up to get him or GSW might fade in the coming months and the pick improves.

Um. They need to extend Favors and Hayward this summer or let them become RFA next summer. The waiting is over.

How much do we extend them for this summer?

Yes that's fine. That's well within the plan. Extend them this Summer. Then sign a Splitter or a Landry type player. That's what I believe KOC/Lindsey would do.

Jazz would rather have the flexibility in the summer. So unless they got a steal it wouldn't make sense.

Beantown and the other members of the JazzFanz brain trust would like you all to know that Millsap and Jefferson were the only expiring contracts in the NBA. FACT.

I've listened this for long enough. Please, please, please answer me what's wrong with this plan:

- Favors & Hayward are not ready as franchise player
- If we can sign Millsap to a reasonable amount (less than $10m per year - do it)
- If not, we sign someone like Splitter or Landry to 3 year contracts in the range of $5-$7m per year. Splitter for example can start next to Favors, Kanter off the bench.
- Once Favors & Hayward are ready to dominate, we'll need the cap space to pay them big $ anyway
- That'll be approx. 2-3 years' time - BOOK it.

This plan will ensure that we have enough $ to pay Favors, Hayward & Kanter once they're legit starters & tearing up the league.

I don't know about you, but I'm excited about our future. Yes it'll be 2-3 years away still, but that's the process and these things usually takes time.

Give me a list of NBA players that went from rotation players to OMG DOMINATE after 6 years. I'm fascinated to know.

Kobe? He didn't really become OMG DOMINATE until his 4th year.

Assuming that's true, imagine how much earlier he would've developed and how much better he would've become if he played behind players of Raja Bell/Randy Foye/Josh Howard's corpse/CJ Miles/Nice Antoine Walker/That One Guy that starts at SF for those seasons!

You don't think that at least Favors or Kanter has the potential to become a dominant player in the league in 3 years?

It might be time to change the team to root for if you don't..

What reality are you living in? Do you have a respect for or knowledge of history at all?

Since it seems you don't understand what my point was (as evidenced by your second paragraph/statement/sentence), my point is players plateau, and very few - if any - players have ever gone from buried on the bench or otherwise shielded from any real opportunities/competition to DOMINATING the league after 6 years. I can't think of a single player, so I'm giving you an opportunity to make me look stupid.

Players get better when they're given more responsibilities or they wash out. Ones that have the potential to DOMINATE are ones that get better and your plan is to shield players from that adversity that makes all human beings grow.

Well if you're talking about bench players suddenly becoming dominant players then look no further than James Harden.

I remember when Harden could hardly get 20 minutes a game, and never closed them DURING HIS SIXTH SEASON. But look out, his seventh season was awesome in 2016.

.....remember when rookie Quarterbacks had to watch and learn on the sidelines for 3 or more years in the NFL? Well, with the rule changes and the emphasis on passing many are now coming into the league and dominating their first year! In today's NBA with the emphasis on one on one play, palming the ball, traveling all being basically legal and never called, these hopper types can come right out of the schoolyard and college ranks and contribute almost right away! You make a good point with Harden.

Yep, agreed!

Eh. Let's not forget that ESPN considers Granger for Hayward fair, for utah. They're not paying attention to us and think we should just take on bad contracts so a bigger-market team can have a new piece. If we couldn't get a young guy like Bledsoe, without giving up a substantial young piece on our end, then i'm glad we'll just wait out the season. I'd rather suffer through a 1/3 of a season with Millsap and Jefferson then a maxed Josh Smith or whatever.
Exactly. Then in 3 years, they'll be recommending deadline deals for Hayward and Favors so the Jazz won't end up in luxury tax hell. There were a lot of minor deals, but Garnett and Pierce stayed put, Josh Smith stayed where he's at, Granger remained, etc. No one wants to take on bad contracts. The only real trade that went down was for Gay a few weeks ago. This is the new NBA with the new CBA that is going to really punish teams that are over the limit.

Did anyone read where Cuban made a case for LA amnestying Kobe? With the Laker's payroll...if they re-sign Howard, they're going to be paying $100M just in taxes!

I do like that a good portion of the posts understand that a deal was not in the Jazz's favor.

Bledsoe for Millsap would've been a fair trade, but with a very cheap contract to back up the fragile CP3, I was betting the Clippers were going to ask for the moon.

ESPN has never seen the value of Hayward, and I bet most of the calls were surrounding Hayward/Kanter/Favors, or they wanted us to take on a big contract for Paul or Al.

I'm glad the Jazz stood pat considering the pickin's were pretty slim. When JJ ends up being the headliner......it's best to stand aside. There will be a lot more options and movement during the off-season and more chances to steal something. I agree with some other posters......this summer is going to be pretty critical. It's time to round out the future, and it's nice to know we can do it through the draft, trades or free agents.

2 first rounders and a TON of cap space.....there's a lot of things to start following after the season ends.
