Mistborn or Game of Thrones?

There is a guy that opened two restaurants. 1 Italian (Alfredos, on HWY 56) and 1 Seafood (The Light House about 2100 N Main). They are good considering location. There is also a steakhouse at the corner of 200 N and main called The Depot Grill(never been there). There is a big BBQ place on 200 N and Main that is good as well. Charlie's is the name I think.

You're right on not much else to do.
Thanks for the info. I always eat at Pizza Factory once, but then usually try different places.

Don't, they have gone to crap the last two years. Sucks because they used to be pretty good.

There is also a nice mom and pop Thai place called Sweet Basil Thai in the little strip malls that share a parking lot with Walmart.

Good to know about Pizza Factory. If I need a good salad bar, I'll still likely go there. But I'll be on vacation so why would I need to eat a salad. I saw some good reviews for The French Spot, and I think I'll give that a try for at least dessert or breakfast. Chef Alfredos and Lighthouse look good. And I always love the Grind for my morning chai latte.

So I've completely changed my mind and started listening to Stephen King's "The Green Mile" last night. Hard to believe, but I've never read a Stephen King book before as I'm not a fan of horror books or movies. I've ignored all the fan gushing on these boards and somehow never realized that he was the author of the book (I really liked the movie).

I also have Mistborn and will start on it once I finish Green Mile.

I'd appreciate it if anyone has suggestions of other non-horror Stephen King books I might enjoy.

Green Mile is fantastic.
11/22/63 is another great, non horror, Stephen King book. About the Kennedy assassination.

I remember liking The Stand quite a bit, but it was probably 29 years ago that I read it, so I'm not sure how it has aged.

I read The Dark Tower series because a ton of people recommended it, but didn't especially like it.

I just realized that Game of Thrones is 27 disks at 72 minutes each. Nope, that will take too long. I'll have to read it someday. So Mistborn it is. Thanks for the help!

As someone who binged all of the existing books in a couple of months I can unequivocally say that I would NOT recommend it.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the story, it is built really well, the universe in which it is set is deep, rich, compelling, and thorough. The mythology/magic is well thought-out and very well-executed. The character development is excellent. The pacing is good, the action is strong and relevant. Really it is a very solid fantasy work with few weak points. For me the biggest problem I had within the story was his insistence on adding "... and so we play....THE GAME OF THRONES" or something like that (you have to imagine that in a deep baritone dramatic acting voice for full effect) sprinkled in enough to go beyond annoying.

But one big glaring weak point keeps me from recommending it:

In all likelihood it will never be finished.

GRRM gets bored with his works (google a bit about his early career and there are interviews where he states as much, and he has a trail of unfinished stories too), and he may have dug a hole he can't get out of with the sheer complexity of the story to this point. And there is plenty of speculation as to his commitment to finishing the story. He has also dealt with some health issues and scares, and he isn't getting any younger. Here is an interesting article about some of this:

https://qz.com/938115/game-of-thron...re-not-writing-the-next-game-of-thrones-book/

Here is his own comments about it from a year ago.

http://grrm.livejournal.com/465247.html

And it isn't looking much better. My bet is it will never be completed.

As an unfinished work it is still very well done, but the fact that he leave so much unaddressed with a high likelihood of never being completed leaves a very dark cloud over the entire work. Reading it is a serious investment, not just in time but in intellect and emotion. It is kind of exhausting in a way, not unlike reading all of LotR all in one shot. So to have it all just drop off generates an epic case of blue balls. I do not recommend anyone get into it unless we get word it is actually being finished, or really until you can buy the entire finished saga. Otherwise you can see a reasonably good adaptation on HBO, where the writers of the show diverged from the books to finish the story themselves.

So I recommend you wait. It is not light fare. It is not a summer novel to read on the beach or pick up and put down from time to time. It is a grind-it-out story not for the faint of heart. But if you don't mind not having closure and don't mind not reading anything else literally for months (because if you try to take a break from it then it is very easy to lose track of the threads of the plot and character arcs. Hell that happened even reading every book straight through), then go for it. It truly is a literary achievement.

Here is a good article detailing some of the issues and theories around GRRM not finishing the work:

For what it is worth I would recommend another as-of-yet unfinished work, the Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss. It is another inventive fantasy story, with some unique twists on the genre and it is a good read.

Agree with this. IMO the ending of the Dark Tower was one of the worst I have read on such a large and high-concept work. Hated the last book with a passion. He totally **** the bed on that last confrontation with the crimson king. Oh look, here is a veritable God, but really he has alzheimers and hey we can just shoot him and stuff. Incredibly ****ty idea even for King who has a tendency to get into great ideas and awesome stories without a good exit strategy, as if the endings just really don't matter. One of the things I generally dislike about King.

Aren't you one of the neanderthals always complaining about spoiling things?

I think the French Spot closed.

Try El Centro, it is a Pizza place off Main and Center St. It is not your typical marinara based pizza. It's a fresh take on pizza from the fast food chains.

I also hated the ending of the dark tower and the battle vs the Crimson king..... but you forgot to mention the young man with a very talented gift as an artist and his role in that battle.

The dark tower books are my favorite story of all time. But I hated the ending.

The reason I didn't mention it is 1) spoiler (for all the neanderthals apparently) and 2) I felt like it was more a deus ex machina than anything else. Yeah he built it up but it was just too convenient and "foreordained" for my taste. But then again, none of it really mattered, right? One of those endings that says "aw **** it, let's just go around again". Lame.

Just curious if you know about the tie in to insomnia in relation to the artist?

No. I have no desire to ever read a King book.

Just enjoying your hypocrisy :)

FWIW I defy you to find a post with me complaining about a spoiler. Maybe years ago, but frankly I just don't care. But you keep tilting at those windmills.

Yeah that novel had a bunch of tie-ins. I read it a long time ago though, don't remember it very well.

I LOVED the first book, but felt kind of let down by the second one. And having to wait 4 years for it didn't help either.

Yeah, I agree. The third hopefully ties it all together but there is a LOT of plot to sort through for a single book to end it all. But is is supposed to be the 3rd day, right? Maybe he will add a bonus 4th day. I just don't see him bringing it all to a satisfying conclusion in one more book. I understand he is also stuck a bit in the quagmire that GRRM seems to be stuck in. A big expansive idea with lots of threads and promise that they just cannot reconcile. I hope he extends it out and does it right. Otherwise it will end up like Ender's Game the movie, where they really should have told Ender's story in 2 movies, maybe even 3, to really capture the depth and context properly, instead of abbreviating it so much that it lost most of its power.

colton have you tried Brandon Mull's Beyonders? It's a pretty unique book that I would recommend to you and yours.
