Mitchell better be hurt

I'm thinking Quin benched Donovan because he lost his cool in that moment.
 
No matter the what's or why's regarding Mitchell being on the bench last night, the kid still rose above and showed why he's a winner.

He was off the bench cheering after every basket, yelling encouragement to his teammates. He jumped up screaming after a bad call (I think an out of bounds), the ref appeared to do a double take at him, lol.

Most rookies would have sat there and pouted.
 
DL and Snyder have been preaching “evaluation period” for months. The jazz have been using the hero default button on Mitchell all season. Who steps up in his absence? They need some other players that can take over also. Maybe this was just an opportunity for them to “step-up” and get some confidence.

I don't want to over react to that loss because honestly we should not have been in the game... no Favs or Rudy. Jonas is trying, but he's not a center. We did not shoot well and there were some positives... thought Rubio played well (he had one WTF turnover at the end that drove me crazy but oh well) Hood was great last night, but Joe Jesus needs to be a 10 minute a night player right now.

Jesus is shooting 8% from three... does not rebound or defend as well as Thabo, Jerebko, or Royce. I realize he helps just go get buckets when the offense stalls, but he has the worst offensive and defensive rating on the team. No idea why he got 29 minutes last night.

I'm not sure if he just can't get a rythymn or if the wrist is still bothering him, but it needs to turnaround... hoping we have a JJ coming out game soon. I don't think he's done by any means, but we have better options if he can't figure it out.

I just think if its based on performance that Joe Johnson shouldn't be out there. Can play DM, Ingles, Ricky, and Hood against the Rockets.

Locke indicated he might be nicked up which would be an acceptable explanation.

Other than blowing the fast break I didn't see any big mistakes. He was also occupying Ariza for much of the night.

We ain't winning any championships this year... it is about development. DM has shown the ability to play through mistakes and come through. If he was hurt that is fine... to bench a guy based on performance but put other under performing guys out there is a little tough.

He is our best offensive player... you ride or die with those guys even when they are having off nights.

Sitting and watching is every bit a part of a rookies development and this team is still trying to make the playoffs, which is every part of this teams progressing for learning to be a winning team. It was clear DM didn't have it last night. U play the players that give u the best shot at winning. Sitting DM when not playing well is what fuels him to be better, because he's coachable and has a great attitude. He's the kind of guy that would take it in stride in like some guys might.

Here is something I don't get about last night. The NBA is, first and foremost, entertainment. NBA teams are, whether we like it or not, a business. Well, the Jazz, like many small market teams, need to capitalize on every opportunity to sell their product. Donovan Mitchell has a better chance of selling the Jazz product than any player we've had since the Stockton and Malone days. He oozes charisma. He is extremely exciting and people like him. They gravitate towards him.

I'm all for a coach "playing the hot hand" or "teaching a guy a lesson." But for fack sake, play the entertaining rookie that people want to see. Play the young guy against the hottest team in the league in the 4th quarter. If you want to teach him a lesson, bench him for a few minutes. Hell, bench him the whole 3rd quarter against a scrub team. But don't bench him in the middle of his current streak of dominating 4th quarters.

Quin, in some ways, hurt the Utah Jazz business last night. And the performance probably did Mitchell no favors in terms of Rookie of the Year, All Rookie Team, All Star Team, etc. The hottest hand the Jazz have right now is the Mitchell/Jazz brand. Don't screw that up Quin.
 
To me, he looked sick starting the game. Not sure if he was or not. Regardless, I don't like the trend of relegating our best offensive player/creator to sit in the corner while "Always Go Under His Screens Rubio" or our slowest player, Ingles, initiate the offense. Of course Mitchell is going to put up bad shots when he's only touching the ball every 3rd time down the floor.
 
Mitchell has played far worse and far less disciplined than last night and given far more leash. Last night is a head-scratcher, especially since they didn't have to play JJ.

That is my point, but others seem to think he was killing us... JJ was the worst player on the floor last night for us... got 29 minutes. Has not been good all season. DM has the ability to put up 10 pts in a couple minutes... and turn a **** night into an okay night.

Guess we saw a different game. I thought his biggest fault was that he wasn't aggressive enough on offense. Did he have defensive lapses -- not so sure, would have to watch the game to see, but he was giving solid effort. Also, don't get where Rubio played so well. He was okay but stunk up the court when the Rockets made their run in the 4th.

He had Ariza on him all night... that dude defends like a MFer! He didn't force too much either. If he was under the weather or hurt I'm fine with him not playing.

I'm okay with this being the exception but if it was based on one mistake or two then its BS and unproductive. We want him playing loose and free... if he's worried he will get yanked he may get Exum Syndrome.

Rubio was good, but yeah he had his mandatory WTF turnover. DM was okay defensively... had 4 steals... I will overlook some screw ups if he's jumping passing lanes like that.

Thank you. The only explanation I can think of is some nagging issue slowing him down.

If Ty Corbin were still coach he would have slowed the pace, went into an offense that could easily defend in transition, and posted up Joe Johnson with shooters around the perimeter. Eat up clock, score, rinse and repeat.
