I want to give him the benefit of the doubt, but it's difficult because it requires me to believe that an army of credible reporters that each confirmed his decision earlier in the day were wrong. There's also the fact that after the leak, when Hayward's agent was asked if word was coming soon, he said "That was the goal, but now we've got to kind of regroup here a bit". Doesn't quite add up.
That said, I think his agent would've been better off just letting it go. Any damage control attempts are by and large going to fall on deaf ears. Hayward's camp botched their handling of this badly, and that sucks, but his intentions probably weren't malicious and it's time to move on.
