I’m not at all worried about this actually. Donovan was not even close to what he is now a year ago at Louisville, and he wasn’t that good two years ago. He’s already improved in a big way his first year here. All those minutes and being allowed to make mistakes, take bad shots sometimes, and take a lot of shots every night just make for a more polished, smarter, better player even by next season.Great numbers.
My only question about DM's development is where to from here? He doesn't have to go really much further to be an amazing player - but I am wondering if he will struggle to take significant incremental steps because of the high standards he has set for himself already and because he plays massive minutes as the scoring leader on a playoff team? How many rookies have had the opportunity (not taking away the fact he forced the coaching stafff's hand) to take as many shots as he has had and to play the amount of minutes he has?
Surely it will be difficult for him to make leaps moving forward.... Maybe improved shooting % off the dribble and more focus on defense?
Donovan’s not going to stop working, watching film, and improving in any way he can. It won’t be next season but he will average 30 points 7 assists and 5 rebounds at some point in his career I think. I think his shot selection and shooting percentage will get better. I think he can find ways to create contact and get more free throws every night. There’s plenty he can do and still has to do to be that super star we all know he is, but he’s going to get there. He’s going through a lot right now, but there’s no way that kid doesn’t improve significantly from here. He’s got such a drive to be great and he will be.
