Most Important Position in the NBA? Larry Brown says PG

I think Point guard is important and there are lot of good point guards that lead you to a lot of wins. Come playoff time though. Things are much different.

The traditional point guard that dominates the ball like Chris Paul, Old D-Will, Rajon Rondo etc don't really work that well come playoff time. Its easier to stop a team when half of your assists come from 1 player. Like Chris Paul.

Look at the Spurs. Nobody averaged over 6 assists per game. Yet they dominated. Again I think point guard is important. but not in the sense of a stat stuffing point guard.

And that's why Larry Brown is no longer coaching in the NBA and sucked balls in his last stops.

i sorta agree for our jazz. trey must become our engine like how chauncey was pistons engine.

can trey be like chauncey offensively? i think trey can. trey isn't big or physical like chauncey, but trey has chauncey's clutch gene and intangibles. remember it took a while for chauncey to really learn how to dictate the tempo, play within himself, and don't panic when things go wrong. and it took 4-5 years for chauncey finally become a decent shooter. he was not a good shooter early on.

IMO, trey will be a good one. i just hope we are patient and let the kid grow.

Trey is a role player. He as an above average outside shot. If he learns to pass first he will be good enough to be apart of a rotation.
I am not worried about him.

chauncey billups shot

.374 fg% .324 3fg% in his first year. didn't even get better till his 4th season.

i predict trey will have billups like career.

Below average maybe

Ya it was more of my opinion of him. His stats show he is below average for sure.

I am giving him a pass with being a rookie, broken finger and Corbin's non offense.

Only reason I give him a pass is because he was a good shooter in college. I think this year he will be much better. Guessing around 43% from the field and 36% from 3.

No such thing as most important position in basketball. You can argue that the quarterback is in football. But you can't make the same argument in basketball.

The most important thing is talent or best player.

I tend to think more along these lines too.

Nope... Laker's have won how many championships with Derek Fisher???

There were MUCH better point guards than Derek Fisher who didn't win.

Most important position is closers a la; MJ, Lebron, Kobe, DWade, Dirk, Durant, etc. Guys who can score in the last 3 minutes of a game. Point guards are nice to build a team, but clutch, go to players are WAY more important. 2 true 'teams' have won the championship in the last 15 years. Detroit and Spurs. Both were well rounded teams with few 'closers'. Chauncey helped, Manu helped, Duncan helped, but no true 'go to' player. 2 out of 15 years weren't won by 'all star closers'.

I'm sure thats why he pushed the Knicks to trade Trevor Ariza and Penny Hardaway for a washed up Steve Francis(To play next to Marbury) on a max deal with several years left.

You need bigs if you don't have Jordan or Lebron. Even with LBJ, he had Bosh who played good D and was a threat offensively. Jordan had a number of players Rodman and Pippen being two of the best defenders of that generation.

Key to winning isn't PG - it's bigs or LBJ/Jordan.

Arguably so for the regular season. Chris Paul is one of the best regular season players ever year, but can't get much done in the playoffs.

I somewhat agree with you. I wouldn't go as far to put it down to an individual with the most talent but rather as the system of the team both offensive and defensive. Twin Towers mentioned the Spurs. Thats a good example because although no one on the team averaged a majority of the assists per game, the Spurs ranked as one of the highest among teams with the most players to average 4 + assists per player per game. Not to mention they have a few guys that are old as dirt and other players that are young with very little experience. It really comes down to Coach Pops system and the team chemistry between those guys. They trampled over Miami, who if you ask me Miami was a more talented team. But the Spurs proved that Chemistry and I.Q. rule over talent alone.

Really? Well he better start showing his above average outside shot because what I've seen so very isn't even close to average. His outside shooting has been the most disappointing part of his game so far.
