colton- After reading your X and Y scenarios i plugged in the numbers and was shocked to find you are absolutely correct. Whats left of my mind is still grappling with how this works. Of course i played with all kinds of different scenarios fudging the numbers towards better shooting and then towards less better shooting and the results always moved the right way in seemingly the correct proportion. Never did i try the type of simplified numbers your scenarios used. That does not change the fact that you are correct. Lets call a time out on this discussion while i try to figure this out better. I am obviously far from a mathematician or believe implicitly in stats but they do have a place in any discussion. The usefulness of stats is something the NBA takes very seriously. They are continually expanding what they are tracking statistically. It seems the wave of the future in sports of all types. If i never get back to you on this you will know that i have failed to figure this out. Thanks for your attention.
Didn't someone once say something like "There are lies, outright lies and then there are statistics".
