14) Utah Jazz

The bar graphs reflect the average points given by the voters for each category.

A year ago, we had the Jazz ranked fourth in the Future Power Rankings. What a difference 12 months can make. Utah's decision to let both Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap walk this past summer, combined with the choice to eschew using copious cap room to add more talent to the roster caused its Players rank to take a pretty big beating. The Jazz slid from 13th to 19th in our current rankings while remaining steady in virtually every other category.

The team continues to have strong leadership and lots of future cap space, and should be able to snag a lottery pick and another first-rounder in one of the best drafts we've seen in a decade. In addition, the players that it does have left all have terrific promise. Derrick Favors, Gordon Hayward and Enes Kanter all continue to have major upside. Rookie point guard Trey Burke struggled in the Summer League, but his résumé as a college player was stellar. Many in the organization still hold out hope that Alex Burks may be a star someday as well.

So, we may be overreacting, just a bit, to a one-year decision to use the epic 2014 draft to bring in another young building block. If even just a couple of those players take the next step toward stardom, the Jazz should be well on their way toward being a contender in the West starting in 2015.

This shows the importance of having a franchise player. If the Jazz hit lottery lightening then they suddenly move from 14th to top 8. It's hard to be one of the 3-4 best teams in either conference without at least one top 10 player, if not two.

For reference:
1) Heat
2) Rockets
3) Thunder
4) Spurs
5) Warriors
6) Bulls
7) Pacers
8) Clippers
9) Cavs
10) Grizzlies
11) Trail Blazers
12) Mavs
13) Hawks

Too lazy to finish.

I think it makes perfect sense. The Jazz have 5 decent players...maybe (depends on how Burke and Burks do). Can Favors and Enes become impact starters or just remain role players? Perhaps Gobert develops as well into a backup 5. But beyond that, the talent is terrible. We all understand why the Jazz went down that road, and even Ford mentions it. All it takes for a significant jump in the ratings is getting a franchise player in the draft and/or a couple of the untested young guys to step up. But until that happens, the Jazz are a complete unknown and deserve to be ranked low.

Team was ranked #4 in spite of a non-playoff level roster, on basis of young players, assets and future flexibility.

Said team neglects to re-sign older, win-now type players, instead electing to play young players with an eye on the future

Said team then uses space formed by getting rid of win-now type players to get three additional future first round draft picks

Said team also drafts 2 young, somewhat promising players who look to really benefit the team in the future, not immediately.

Said team drops 10 spots in the "Future Power Rankings".

......

Every single move the Jazz made this summer was looking at the future, was oriented around the future. Lol these rankings are a joke. Of course they were always nothing but offseason fodder, but still.

See sneakers quote.

I'm not going to respond to this dumb assessment

Wait. The Jazz fell some spots because they decided to let go of a bunch of players that probably weren't going to be good in five years or on the team in five years?

****ing stupid.

No you are all misunderstanding, this is a future power ranking today, meaning it is a power ranking today for in the future, when the future will be like today only with different power rankings than they posted today, in the future.

Yeah it's ********.

Terrible is too strong for me. I love Evans. Not sure why he has such a bad rep. Great D and solid range out to 15 feet. A joy to watch.

Rush has skills. 3 and D.

That's 7.

Gobert and Clark are unproven, but I'm holding out hope on them. If one of them hits, that's 8.

Our D will definitely be better. I don't think I'm much different than most who expect to struggle early, but hold out very reasonable hope that the second half of the season will see us win a ton of games.

Sure wish they'd have kept Neto here though this season. I think he and Burk would have pushed each other in good, healthy competition.

It would be very interesting if LeBron does leave the Heat after this season. With LeBron gone, and a broken down Wade, the Heat are suddenly not that great.

It would be a cold, calculated move, but could lead to James getting more rings than Kobe and Jordan if he goes to a more fertile situation.

Chalk it up to the Corbin Touch. If Corbin had played the young guns like most of us wanted, instead of wasting the year on players we knew were leaving, then the Jazz's future would look brighter to national sport writers. We really shouldn't get upset with them for failing to see what was never shown.

I like this post except the end. I think its best that Burke get a year head start to try and earn and learn the pg spot. With Neto in the picture it could get ugli. If Neto completely out plays Burke but Burke isn't terrible, then what? Give up on Burke and basically give up on your asset that you paid two picks for?. Its entirely possible too. Then who knows what thst does to Burke's value.

I say you give the Burke thing a chance without having that possible distraction. It will be perfectly natural for him to struggle at first and still become a good player. We want to know how good he can be

We are invested in it. Neto isnt going anywhere either.

I know it might not sound right but I think its what the Jazz are thinking too.

Yeah LeBron has never done anything like that before.
