NBA play in tournament thread

The were probably some regular season games that didn't matter. Not a waste of time.

I've been arguing for fewer regular season games for years. I don't see how adding extra games to regular season(which is what play-in really is) helps the situation.

Hell, I've hated the first round being best-of-7 the past couple of decades, too.

I think we should go straight from summer league into a sudden-death tournament. One quarter. 8 minutes. No timeouts and everyone can get back home in time for bed.

We can stretch it a little more than that. Draw teams out of a hat and play 1 game a week for like 16 weeks. Then a single-loss tournament like the NCAA for the top 4 teams in each conference, one per week. Then on a Sunday, like maybe in February, we can have a single game finals with the 2 winners. That is a nice compromise, right?

I agree on a shorter season and a best of 5 series in round 1. I also happen to like the play in format.

I could support a shorter regular season if they added a meaningful mid-season tournament of some kind. All-in-all, it would come out to a similar number of games. I sorta like the long-haul aspect to the season and how it determines a champion.

I don’t know how they would make the mid-season tournament meaningful, though. Would love to hear some of the better ideas that’ve been proposed.

But it doesn't. Only one month really determines the champion. I don't know if we absolutely need 82 games to determine seedings, especially since more than half the league makes the playoffs. Hell, now with this play-in, 2/3 of the league are in the playoffs.

Injuries, managing health, mental endurance,...

Yes it does.

I fully support this season as the norm, 72 games, but spread out over the normal 82-game season length, and the play-in tournament. Seeds 1/2 get a week off to rest and recuperate. Adds some intrigue to the end of the season and minimizes tanking. I fully support making this season the norm.

With the exception of the all-star game. Time to just axe that. It's turned into just such ****. Just announce the all-stars and cut everything else. Or do something to make it meaningful, like go back to East vs. West and playing for finals home-court advantage regardless of which 1-seed had the better record. Then it means something.

If the regular season mattered, the Lakers at 7th seed wouldn't the bookies' favourites to make it out of the West.
Lines are not set based on what bookies think is going to happen, the line is set based on how bookies think people are going to bet. Big market, top NBA star who's recognizable beyond basketball, last year's champs. People are going to bet on the Lakers so the bookies set the odds accordingly.

MEM is a good team so you shouldn't sleep on them winning tonight.

I would take them over GSW just because Curry is the best pure shooter in NBA history, but there are no cake walks this year.
Grizzlies would be a cake walk.

what chance do the grizz have ?

i'll give them a 1% chance to win this game, so there is a chance.

**** the bookies.

And, yeah, the regular season doesn’t DETERMINE anything on its own... but that doesn’t mean play some determining influence. I really don’t think this is debatable. Kinda weird to see you dig into that take. Oh well.

I actually think the Grizzlies would be a tougher series. The Ws basically run the same few plays on offense. They run Curry off screens and handoffs, and if he gets doubled, they swing the ball to an open shooter. It just doesn't seem sustainable in a 7-game series. As it stands, their offense is ranked 20th in the league.

Defensively, they're pretty good, but Mitchell, Clarkson, Conley and Bogdanovic should be able to attack switches constantly.
