Sweet! A good dad ad got turned into a sexist, racist debate!
Go Jazzfanz!
Lol, it's like an evening with my extended family. Any topic of conversation ultimately turns into an Obama-bashing, liberal hating tangent.
For what it's worth, I can easily see how the post that started this 'debate' could reasonably interpreted as racist, even if that wasn't the poster's intent. On the surface, it did appear to wink at black stereotypes, or at least, I think one might have easily concluded it did, without going all PC. I am happy to accept the poster's claim that it was not intended that way.
I would add, however, that often time racism is not overt but implicit to the extent that we are influenced by popular messages/stereotypes of certain groups. For example, I have a friend who, with some frequency when listening to black b-ball players, comments on how articulate they are. He never, ever says that about a white player. He is NOT a racist, but it does appear that he has internalized the stereotyped expectation that blacks are less articulate than whites. Does that make him a racist, No, of course not, but it does demonstrate that even people of good faith still hold implicit, less flattering stereotypes of different groups. There is a good deal of research on this, which fairly clearly demonstrates the existence of implicit biases even among people who consider themselves more open minded/liberal.
