Netflix raising rates by up to 60% on 9/1/11

Nope, I sure didn't. That is likely because I have a 10 year old TV and my DVD player is just about as old.

J/k. I love you.

As I read comments online, I laugh at those thinking that they are going to destroy Netflix by downgrading to instant stream only. That is EXACTLY what they want everyone to do. Owning and operating tons of distribution centers and paying for postage millions of DVDs sent and returned is too expensive. This is just one step in Netflix trying to get rid of dvd-by-mail altogether, and hopefully leads to lots more streaming content.

I seem to remember that Netflix wanted to switch to streaming-only a few years back, largely because it does cut costs on distribution so much, and people were up in arms about it. I think that's probably still the direction they're headed... they just realized that they're going to need to wait a few more years for people to accept it.

I currently have the streaming-only option and am quite happy with it. The selection is indeed somewhat limited, but they do keep adding things. And the reality is that there are enough TV shows on there already that I'm interested in to keep me pretty happy.

No one should be surprised by this. Just following the very successful Microsoft business model. Get rid of the competition (e.g. Blockbuster, etc.) then jack up prices on your virtual monopoly and rake in as much money as possible until the feds decide to do something about it.

I guess I must be in the minority that still sees this a great deal for my entertainment dollar. For price of one movie ticket I get a lot of entertainment for a month. Sounds like a good deal to me. I always was surprised Netflix's rate were higher.

I'm thinking of canceling. Sort of. I have the 3 DVD's at a time and the streaming and it's going to run me $23.99 I believe which works out to five movie rentals/month at the typical Blockbuster/On Demand rate depending. To be honest, I really don't watch THAT many movies other than in the summer to warrant this so I'm not sure it makes sense to shell out nearly $300 a year. I think it's probably most wise to have just the streaming which I can watch via my Wii/PS3/Laptop. How's their streaming selection? Has it improved? I remember Kicky saying it left something to be desired.

It could be better. A year ago I remember watching Stepbrothers online. Now it's DVD only...

Around a year ago I was debating of going with Netflix or the Blockbuster online and due to the streaming I chose Netflix but the mail was always annoyingly slow and that is why I wanted to us Blockbuster online (along with being able to get PS3 games) now with this I think I'll keep the streaming and pay for the Blockbuster service.
