NFL Discussion Thread - 2013

If I'm a bronos fan I'm pretty pissed that this of all years has to be a cold weather Superbowl.

Just so y'all know, I don't dislike Denver or Peyton Manning at all. Will be totally fine with it if they win and think Manning deserves another ring. There is just something about rooting for dat underdog doe, so I gotta pull for Seattle.

Also, Seattle got completely screwed by the refs all game the year they play Pittsburgh in the Superbowl, so their fans deserve a good Superbowl.

Kinda also wanna root for Manning doe. Oh well, I'll root for whatever team Stoked is not rooting for.

@bronos fans, Seattle is kinda built to beat y'all no?
Not really. Denver just beat 2 really good running teams. Seattle has good DB's but has not matched up with an offense as explosive as Denver's. Tom Brady could not beat the Broncos and I don't think Russell Wilson can either. So the keys really are what Stoked said. Can Seattle cover all of Denver's offensive threats? Can they run the ball against a pretty good Denver run defense? And i'll add one more, who can win the TO battle?
.
I see it as a pretty good matchup. But while biased I just don't know if Seattle's offense will be able to score as much as Denver's. And while Seattle's defense is really good I still think Denver will score 20+.

Seattle is uniquely suited to challenge Denver. It's strength against strength.

This Denver is a great passing team against a great passing defense.
Seattle is a very good to great running team against a really good run defense.
I don't know much about Seattle other CB's but can they match up with Decker/Welker and Julius Thomas? I expect Sherman to draw D. Thomas so how will the rest of their secondary match up?
.
But Yes UGLI this turns out to be a bad year for a cold weather SB. If this game is played in a warm weather city I think Denver would win by 2 TD's.

I'd expect nothing less from the Drama Club.

Yep
Frozen peyton < thawed peyton

Weather weather weather

It looks like it's gonna be a blizzard on SB Sunday. That will help the Hawks out. In good weather/dome, I would say Peyton. Crappy weather, Hawks.

I think Denver is the best team in the league. From kicker to QB, this team is friggin stacked. Welker and Tamme are after thoughts because they have so many weapons.

I do not think so. Manning loves his slant passes over the middle. Having that option greatly increases the pressure on the defense. That option is a big part of Denvers O.

Sure he does. I haven't looked at the stats, but I'm guessing decker and the Thomas bros have better stats than Welker and Tamme. Welker and Tamme are great players. Monte Ball is a starting RB yet gets few carries because Moreno is so good. With Praeter, all Peyton has to do is get a few yards past the 50 and he will take care of the rest. This Denver team is friggin stacked.

Oh I agree that they are stacked. I am just saying that having teams forced to cover the TEs across the middle is what opens up the deep receivers. It is a very much used part of the Denver O. You will see 6-7 passes for first downs across the middle to the TEs (including Welker) a game.

This game will be decided based on three things.

1. Broncos O line v. Seahawks pass rush
2. Broncos receivers ability to deal with the physical Seahawks secondary
3. Broncos ability to stop the Seahawk running game

Yep
Frozen peyton < thawed peyton

1. It's not so much the Broncos o line more then Manning vs the pass rush.

2. Agree

3. This is interesting, but if the 49ers can't stop him I don't think the Broncos will.

As UGLI said the Seahawks are built to beat the Broncos. Yes the Broncos are stacked with weapons, but so is the Seahawks secondary.

I'm pretty sure they have better stats cause well...they're better players.

And Jacob Tamme is not a great player. He's reliable, decent, etc, etc...but he ain't great.

Broncos faced 4 top 10 rushing teams this season. Washington #5, Pats #9, K.C. # 10 and Philly #1. Denver was 4-1 (That 1 loss was to the Pats and Denver beat them in the AFC Championship game and held them to 64 yards total) in those games. Denver also only allowed 1 RB to get more than 100 yards this season. Denver is fantastic against runs up the middle. Denver only allowed 2.84 yards per carry over the center, best in the league. They have a harder time with runs around the edges. So they need to watch those Wilson bootlegs.

Part of their success against the run is because teams have to abandon the running game to play catch up.

If Seattle's D can stop Manning, they will be able to wear down Denver with the run game. The Thursday night game against the Chargers late in the season is the blueprint.

Broncos defense is very aggressive against the run. This is the way they scheme. Wilson will have to make some plays. I think he definitely can, especially with his legs, and having Percy will be beneficial (is he playing), but I'm not sure the rest of their receivers will be able to win matchups against Bronco DBs. Denver essentially puts guys on an island and forces them to make plays.

Correct. That is why I listed Denver's O line's ability to handle the Seattle pash rush as one of the 3 key factors to the game. Denver's O line has been spectacular this season in offerring Manning protection. If he is allowed to sit in the pocket and make passes Seattle is in trouble. Making Manning move and putting him under pressure is key.

Seattle's top sacker has only 8.5 for the season. That is ranked tied for 29th. Denver has only allowed 18 sacks on Manning all season long. For comparison Tom Brady has been sacked 40 times, Drew Brees, 37 times, Matt Ryan 44 times and Russell Wilson 44 times.

So you are right that Seattle needs to get to Manning early and often. However, as the season has shown, with Denver that is far easier said than done.

I think Denver's OLine is more due to Payton Manning's ability to work in the pocket, read defenses, and no one gets rid of the ball quicker. Regardless of whether he played for Denver or Indianapolis. He never got sacked much.
