Orton signing with the Bears just makes too much sense to end up happening.

I think it's a foregone conclusion that The Bears are at least going to try to claim Orton off waivers.

I'm sure the second Cutler went down Orton's agent was in touch with The Bears FO and Orton then asked for the Broncos for his outright release.

If Orton is claimed off of Waivers he is owed the rest of his salary for the year. He was due 9 Million this year - 6 games left - about 3 to 4 Million for 6 games (Probably 5 games by the time he gets into a system).

If he clears Waivers he can sign whereever he wants for whatever he is offered.

Also regarding his QBR - even though numbers are numbers I have always viewed Orton as an average QB. That isn't a bad thing but you throw in that his 4th Quarter numbers and clutchness is garbage I view him as a Garbage QB.

IMO there is only one spot for him to land..Chicago. Miami has a QB that has completed 70% of his passes with only 1 INT the last 3 games in Moore. They also are not in the playoff race so they won't spend the cash, unless they view him as their QB for next year or the future (And if they do I am sorry Dolphins fan).

I still would be surprised if they pick up Orton. I bet they give Hanie a chance because he has been in the system, and probably has chemistry with some of the players already. Bring in Orton, he doesn't know the system, doesn't know the players, and will be benched again once Cutler gets back.

You're right - I've come to learn Bears on currently 30th in Waiver Priority. Economically it would make no sense for them to pick him up until he clears waivers.

Reports from ESPN say the Bears will put in a waiver claim for Orton.

Lets see...the Bears are ok with paying 3-4 million for a guy to sit on the sidelines for 5 games but they won't pay their best player? Makes sense.

Possibly KC claims him as well with Cassell out. They still have a shot in the awful AFC West so it may be worth it.

So a total crap QB that "knows the system" is better than the guy that can actually throw a ball and played in Chicago under the same coach just a couple seasons ago?

Let's reiterate, the Bears are DONE if they don't make a play for a real QB right now. Orton is the closest thing, and it's not even close.

What makes you so sure they are DONE? I think they are going to give Hanie a shot first, even if they do bring Orton in. Hanie is kind of an unkown, I don't why everyone here assumes he is garbage. He actually did fairly good in last years playoff game considering the circumstances (high pressure, high pressure D, first substantial playing time).

He didn't crumble, that's about it. Any success he had was because Green Bay had not game planned him at all. He's in the same vein as Curtis Painter and Matt Flynn. He's Ronnie Price as your starting PG.

And what makes me sure they're done? They're in the same division as the Packers and Lions, and would finish below at least 3 of those teams (Packers, Niners, Saints are a lock pending a total disaster) with Cutler in good shape. Atlanta, Dallas, and the Giants are nipping at their heels and getting better, while Detroit is healthy, explosive, and should generally be trending upward while they have the same record and have split the series.

It's a tight race. Trying out a terrible QB is throwing a game away that probably means the playoffs. If Hanie sucks, Orton will still need time to adjust (even though Orton is simply the better player).

$3 million is chump change and far less than what they stand to lose if they lose two in a row with Hanie.

I expect the Lions to crumble down the stretch (especially the next two games). I think winning 3 of their final 6 games will be good enough to get into the playoffs. I think they could do that with Hanie (assuming it isn't complete trash).

The Giants are getting better? They've lost two in a row and play at New Orleans, Green Bay, the Cowboys twice, the Jets, and the Redskins the rest of the way. Try again.

Josh McCown. Well, at least he knows the offense. I'm not planning on seeing him anyway because I really believe Hanie can at least get us 3 wins over the last 6. Just get us into the playoffs then Cutler will be back. That's the best case scenario for Bears fans right now.

How did the Bears get to the Super Bowl back in 2006? We had a crap quarterback then and relied on a running game, solid defense, and elite special teams. That's how the Bears win. Not with stellar quarterback play. Jay Cutler over the past few games has been playing great. Probably the best of his career, BUT, that's not how the Bears win games. It was a luxury to have Cutler performing the way he was.

I take it you don't watch many Bears games if you think this team will just crumble without Cutler. We can easily go 3-3 over the last 6 games and get into the playoffs.

I never said Orton was stellar, but no team in the league can get away with a guy that can't throw as the starter. Orton fits the bill a lot more than Hanie does.

Whenever I watch the Bears, they look crappy to me. I think I might be ready to place my first sports bet here.

-With Hanie starting, they won't win 3 more games.
-With Hanie starting, they won't make the playoffs.
