No thread about the Filipowski fiasco?

And the background teams do into these players is crazy. I'm sure all these teams talked to his family. He might have dropped more because of the toxic situation with his family got revealed, not because of the girlfriend (directly). Every family has some secrets, just imagine getting interviewed about it. Probably made for a lot of weird interviews with him.

I know when I was reading the family's alleged tweets they said something along the lines of they tried to tell the people at Duke but they didn't do anything. So yeah, drafting Filipowski might means you have to deal with his family.

How convenient that there is a team that plays four blocks away from the Mormon temple, owned by a member of that same church (i think) which needs a PF/C player. His family sounds like a bunch of Karen's to me. They think she is gold digging, well they ain't getting squat with the way they are handling this.

How involved are family when players enter the NBA anyway? Don’t they spend most of their time with a girlfriend or simply just random girls?

I would’ve thought having a solid girlfriend should actually be a positive.

I was teaching Sunday school a couple weeks ago and a story was shared about someone being disowned by their family for joining the 'Mormon' (my) church and she was warmly welcomed and encouraged. It is not the first time I have heard similar stories, in fact it is almost a right of passage in the church. As for the dating while in high school, if she follows her beliefs, no way they broke the law.
While I don’t think anybody knows actual facts at this point, what’s being reported is the inverse of your anecdote. It sounds like he’s cut his family out of his life for not being ok with the girl or the relationship.

And for the record, since I got a thumbs down and a few complaints on my original post, I don’t think the girl being mormon makes the story more salacious or is a negative factor in any way, I just found it funny that he ended up in Utah of all places.

I hadn’t heard that she was once his babysitter, which if true just makes this all the more yucky, but there’s no scenario under the sun in which I’d be ok with one of my 16-17 year old kids starting a relationship with a 25-26 year old and I’m not surprised one bit that Kyle’s family had a problem with it and I applaud them for questioning her motives. Context matters and entering into a relationship with a 34 year old when you’re 26 is lightyears different than a minor being in a relationship with someone 8 years their senior.

FWIW, I don't think the Mormon church would have been in support of him cutting all ties with his family, or him staying overnight at her place all the time while in college.

Hadn't heard about him staying at her place, that's not a very 'mormon' thing to do. as for it being inverse, when two sides start arguing back and forth, they eventually stop communicating no matter which side actually claims that they are cutting the other one out. i doubt that his family want him to say anything to them that doesn't include 'i broke up with her'.

Listen, as an outsider who is pretty weirded out by mormonism in general, it is hilarious reading some of these "Mormon grooming" theories people have on the Internet.

Like attractive girls reaching out with an Instagram full of bikini pics to convert you is not the Mormon welcome I got when I moved to SLC. I just got people asking to "send their friends over to talk" and spaghetti parties.

The story is weird, but the Mormon part of it just feels out of place with the story.

If “Mormon grooming” was a thing where girls in their mid 20s were seducing high school boys, @The Midnight wouldn’t be living in Thailand right now.

We don’t know what goes on behind the scenes but since the story broke, I’ve seen tweets from his brother where he’s basically saying Kyle, your family loves and misses you, wants to be a part of your life, etc. Again, who knows if it’s genuine or a sympathy ploy.

I think the mormon thing is kinda burying the lead here. It sure sounds like this lady actively enticed/groomed a minor into having a relationship with her when she was 25 years old. That’s outta bounds regardless of her religious affiliation. The more I read, I feel sad for Kyle.

Surprised theres no traction on this situation here on Jazzfanz because it is a pretty big topic on the internet. On draft night and the days afterward social media was buzzing about Filipowski and his girlfriend and how she has been grooming him, and has been dating him since he was 16 years old (She was around 24-25).

Of course we are perceived as the brunt of the joke due to Karl Malone. I see a lot of "Utah loves their mormons and child groomers" and I think its unfair to us, and Kyle seeing that Kyle is the victim in the case. We didn't draft his girl. And If his draft stock really plummeted due to his girlfriends involvement in his life that is pretty wild, when we've got Josh Giddey still in the league .

You're the one who brought it up. You're not allowed to assign homework.
He allegedly was groomed by his girlfriend. She had been dating him when he was 16, meanwhile she had already graduated with a Bachelors at Auburn University and was round 24-25. It's a pretty big topic among the social media crowd, and because drafted him and employed Karl Malone for 18 years the Jazz are being clowned (Even though our draft pick is the victim in this case so I don't see the resemblance).
