United Nations (CNN) -- North Korea on Tuesday rejected international findings that it sank a South Korean ship, warning at the United Nations the dispute could lead to war.
"A war may break out any time," Ambassador Sin Son Ho said, accusing South Korea of "fabricating" the results of the investigation into the sinking of the Cheonan.
The loss of the ship and 46 sailors in March raised tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
North and South Korea presented their cases to the United Nations on Monday, and South Korea then urged the Security Council to take "timely and appropriate measures."
North Korea's envoy responded harshly Tuesday.
"If the Security Council releases any documents against us, condemning or pressuring us ... then myself as diplomat, I can do nothing. ... The follow-up measures will be carried out by our military forces," he said.

This stuff actually scares me. The PRNK could kill tens of thousands of people in the first few hours of an actual war between North and South Korea, and that's without nukes. How would the world respond? Where would China stand? Where would Japan stand? Does the U.S. jump right in? It could get really complicated, really fast.
 
North Korea is all alone on this one. China would at the very worst stand aside and let UN reprisals happen and at the very best support any action taken against them. Kim Jong Il has really screwed the pooch this time.

Screw who? The innocent civilians on both sides? The thousands of U.S. military members stationed along the DMZ? Humanity in general?

North Korea has a tremendous amount of munitions pointed at South Korea. Enough so that Seoul would take heavy damage immediately after hostilities began. It would be ugly on a scale no one has seen in more than a generation.
 
As soon as Kim Jong-Il gets over NK's loss to Brazil and his 3 day Jack Daniels/Opium high, he'll change his tune yet again.
 
No way does NK actually attack. Until they show actual preparations towards war, I don't believe anything will be done
 
Some of this, I think, relates to domestic political concerns inside North Korea. It's not a secret that Kim Jong-Il is creating a succession plan. It's entirely possible they're manufacturing a way for Kim Jong-Un to look tough given that he's presently situated in the National Defense Commission in North Korea. Even if they don't ever do anything, if they get anything Jong-Un can spin as a concession and take credit for it's probably a positive for what Kim Jong-Il already wants to do.
 
I have always appreciated North Korea's way of diplomacy. "Hey you stupid mother %#$@#'s, give us aid or we'll blow Seoul to bits!!!" Somebody should have called them on this a long time ago. I was living in Japan (Hokkaido to be exact, you know, where most of the people North Korea kidnapped were taken from) when the Iraqi war started. I always said we were going after the wrong dictator. We chose to ignore the North while they developed nuclear weapons and now it is a little late to go in and take them out. The real tragedy, as someone pointed out earlier, are the common people. You don't hear much on the news here in America about the people who have escaped for North Korea, but they have some crazy sad stories.

I agree with this. I can't stop thinking of the 46 sailors that were killed. What of them? So. Korea is going to just bluster about this and the UN will ignore it and hope they give up? If 46 American Sailors were killed you can bet that a North Korean ship would have gone down. It is complete ******** that No. Korea is most likely going to get away with this and the international community will turn a blind eye.

Good take on the situation.
North Korea is isolated on this one. Everyone knows that it was a torpedo attack. Just political posturing.


Oh, and BTW, watch out people, I've seen a couple of examples that could be viewed as circumventing the profanity filter. Now mind you, I'm not reporting it and I'm not saying or recommending anything should or should not be done. That would be a violation on my part for trying to moderate within a thread. Just saying, "watch yourselves out there people." It can be a dangerous place - just like the DMZ.

Eh, the problem is that any military action taken against North Korea means tons of munitions being dropped on Seoul. I was told by many people that they have tons of artillery pointed as Seoul, armed and ready to go off at any time. One thing against North Korea, though, is that they know they can't win a war and that China isn't interested in fighting a war for them. If push comes to shove, they'll likely accept defeat so long as Seoul is completely decimated, which would economically crush South Korea, with Pusan being the only metro type city.


And interestingly enough, I lived in Cheonan for a year, the city, not the ship.
 
Wouldn't it be a kick if South and North Korea made it to the Round of 16 in the World Cup and somehow ended up facing each other? Crazy.

They could probably do something like that every few months and get away with it. I don't think anybody will go after them unless they actually do go after Seoul. Iran on the other hand......I would flee that country if I lived there.
