What's new

Not saying we should but would you trade Alec Burks for...

I think we can still move AB and follow this plan, but I don’t think those guys are coming and I don’t think Butler or Kawhi actually hit FA... both can be extended this offseason and I think both will want to be.

I think you are looking at Khris Middleton, Tobias Harris, or similar in FA 2019.

Another thing to watch for is using AB and the expirings in a sign and trade for Jabari or Aaron Gordon. I think it’s very unlikely and we’d likely surrender a first to get it done but I think Parker is out of Milwaukee next year and Gordon could be on the block... I think the Magic have to be nervous about paying him 20M plus per year.
Going from my hopes of klay/kahwi/jimmy to middleton/harris makes me want to puke. Would be much happier with Gordon/Jabari. Not giving up hope for one of those big dogs doe. Who wouldn't want to play with gobert, Mitchell, jingles, and Quin and have a shot at a title while making max money? Only an idiot wouldn't want that.

If there's a team that really wants Alex, we can include him as a throw-in to a trade. However, at his $11M salary, that isn't likely. It's probably best just to let him expire next year and keep him as a 10th man of sorts, giving us the freedom to trade someone else. It's probably not worth taking back baggage to move Burks.

For example, having Burks on our roster made it a little easier to move Rodney Hood this year, since he could play some back-up minutes at the 2.
Cmon dude.

I don't think having Burks mattered at all. Royce's strong play gave us some wing depth but we had to trade Rodney anyway: he wanted a bigger role/$ and we didn't want to commit to those. Sayonara.

I get the appeal... just think those types rarely change teams in FA and when they do it is for really appealing markets... LA, Miami, GS.

Dallas couldn’t get Deandre... and that is a more appealing market. Kwahi likely pushes for mega max contract with SA and I think Minny reups with Butler. Klay seems content as the third/fourth fiddle on a championship team. Some have mention the zinger as a possibility. I think his injury means he signs an extension this offseason.

I’m fine with someone hoping to land a big dog, but am much less hopeful personally. I think having the flexibility in a deep FA class opens up a lot of possibilities. Should have a clear idea of what we need at that point.

Jazz are going to have to poach someone in a trade and then convince them to stay. They should do their best to keep maximum cap space available in 2019 and 2020 to have a shot at grabbing an elite free agent if they strike out on the trade market.

I wouldn’t break the bank for a guy like Middleton or Harris. Go big, or go home. I’d much rather keep Favors and Rubio over clearing cap space for a 2nd/3rd tier free agent.

Let's just trade Favors and Burks and whatever else, including a few Miller dealerships, for the Brow and win all the championships. AD + Gobert + Mitchell + Ingles + Rubio. Mother of all that is holy, is there a better starting 5 in the NBA than that? Fill in the bench with a couple of 3 and D guys, keep Udoh Jerebko Crowder, get Neto back. Wow.

Edit: I know, I know, but a guy can dream can't he?

Can you work out a sign and trade with a guy who is a restricted free agent?

Yes... I could see Orlando and Milwaukee both being open to this but will cost at least a first.

I will say this:

I think the biggest possible decision the Jazz could make this off-season is using the first round pick to unload Burks for non-guaranteed contracts they can cut and then use that cap-space to sign Jabari Parker or Aaron Gordon.

Other than that, I dont really see much urgency to trade Burks at all unless some team wants him for a 2nd round pick and non-guaranteed contracts, but I dont see that happening.

I agree

Sign and trade is much more likely if we get Parker or Gordon. Moving AB and waiving all non-guaranteed guys leaves us at $15M with the Exum cap hold... if you can sign Dante to something quickly you can clear another 5-7M. The timing makes it tough to try and sign either outright.

Meanwhile Dallas, Chicago, maybe Indiana, Phoenix can offer those guys a contract. A lot of moving parts.

If they aren't willing to sign and trade those guys then it is likely they just match whatever is offered and try and trade them later (the Blake Griffin). Neither team is in a great position to lose an asset for nothing.

There is no urgency to make an AB move doe... if we can't get a more usable expiring you just keep him until the trade deadline... can cut him after if need be.

Chris Paul was traded for Lou Williams, a late 1st round pick and a bunch of spare parts. There’s no telling what a team might be willing to part with to get an extra $20 million in cap space for a guy that’s ready to leave. Just have to be ready to jump on any opportunities that come up. I feel like DL is ready to go.

So Utah burns a 1st to dump Burks just so they can sign an offer sheet that will either be matched or be high enough not to get matched, and therefore have a good chance at being a terrible contract? **** that noise.

That would be terrible management. Burks will be expiring this year, and Utah will have another year to prove themselves as a worthy FA destination. 1st round picks are too valuable right now to burn one dumping a guy who will have value as an expiring contract within a few months.

Or it could be brilliant.

What would yall think about the Jazz first round pick and Alec Burks for Bogdan Bogdanovic?

I don’t see any way possible that the Jazz use a quality asset to get rid of Burks, rescind Favors Bird rights, rush Dante Exum’s contract negotiations and release Sefalosha, Jerebko and Udoh all on the chance that they can put together an offer sheet that will likely get matched anyways. They’d find themselves in a worse situation than if they’d just kept all those guys, let them expire and use their draft pick.

I think it’s probably more likely that they’d be active in the trade market before the draft and look to package up to $24 million worth of expiring/non-guaranteed contracts (plus assets) into one core player before extending Exum and Favors on short term (2-3 years) contracts.

Maybe the best thing the Jazz could do with Burks is to let him sit the next year and let his contract expire. Him, Rubio, Jerebko, Udoh, Sefalosha. Thats a lot of money coming free. Much better FA pool in 2019. Go all out for a big name, and if you don't get a big name, then sign a Mirotic, Carroll, Taj Gibson, Tobias Harris, Paul Milsap, etc...

I agree with you, which is why I think that the only way that we could do something like that is if we figure out a sign and trade of some sort with one of the restricted guys.

If Orlando called and said they'd take Rubio, Burks, and a 1st for a newly-signed Aaron Gordon, I think you have to consider something like that. Same with Jabari.

I think the Jazz's plan is to go after someone in 2019 though.

Have you been hanging out with Thabo recently?
