A nutrition professor lost 27 pounds eating nothing but powdered donuts, Twinkies, Doritos, Oreos, and other junk food items, according to his Facebook page.

Mark Haub, for 10 weeks, endured and enjoyed the junk-food goodness, eating one of the aforementioned items every three hours instead of meals.

Haub, who is a professor at the University of Kansas, said that pure calorie counting is the most important aspect of losing weight, not nutrition.

He dubbed the experiment the “convenience store diet” and limited himself to less than 1,800 calories per day, according to CNN.

His body mass index (BMI) went down from 28.8 to 24.9, and he now weights 174 pounds.

"That's where the head scratching comes," Haub told CNN. "What does that mean? Does that mean I'm healthier? Or does it mean how we define health from a biology standpoint, that we're missing something?"

His LDL cholesterol dropped from 153 to 123, and his HDL cholesterol raised from 37 to 46, according to his Facebook page.
 
I believe it. A lot of people's biggest problem is portion size and starving then binging on 2-3 meals a day. This makes your body store fat.

I've heard from multiple people numerous times that a person should actually eat 4-6 smaller meals as opposed to the 2-3 larger meals that is standard here.

Yep. It is about using up more calories than you eat.

However, there are two additional issues he fails to address:
1. Metabolism. He likely would have lost more by eating the same amount of calories, but foods on the lower end of the glycemic index. High levels of insulin, which he'd get by eating those sugary snacks, will slow down fat burning. Boost your metabolism and the body will burn off calories faster.

2. What "kind" of weight did he lose. In any reduced calorie regimen, you're going to lose some muscle along with fat. If he didn't take in much protein to rebuild his muscle tissues, it's a good bet he lost more muscle mass than he would have had he eaten a better-balanced diet.

Also, 10 weeks isn't a lot, but I wouldn't be surprised to see this guy gain it all back in spades. Funny that his study cites BMI and cholesterol, but makes no mention of blood glucose levels. I'll bet that's off the charts. He's going to be craving sugar now. I'll bet his energy level really drops now that he's no longer getting his sugar fix every 3 hours. I'll bet he has a very hard time not including several sugary snacks a day with his meals over the next several weeks.
 
I have no trouble believing this at all. Calorie-counting diets have always worked. In fact, many popular diets that purport to be based on other factors may work primarily because of incidental calorie reduction. For instance, I read a study quite a few years ago about how the Atkins diet, when put into practice, actually results in high reduction of caloric intake.

This particular diet, with the donuts and doritos, I suspect would be very difficult on a person, because donuts and doritos contain such high concentrations of calories, that consuming 1800 calories would be very little food at all.

One of the best routines for losing weight while retaining muscle is sprinting. Just as you mentioned; bursting, short, high intensity workouts that take maybe 10-15 minutes per day. Take a close look at sprinters. They are muscular, ripped and obviously very fit cardio wise.

My problem with workouts like this would be injury. I can't just go out and sprint or do intense workouts like this in a 10-20 minute session, without first warming up for 15-30 minutes before the intense parts even begin. And then cooling down some afterward is crucial too, at least for me imo.
 
Worst diet ever is getting married. I've put on 15 in three months. I'm fat.

I would like to add that having kids is detrimental too. I put on 20 in the first year of marriage, and an additional 15 with every kid. Fat, it's not just for the ladies.

I'm sure not in the way of health of most of his body's organs.. pancreas, liver, etc.

But in terms of losing weight, people are really as dumb as a box of rocks on the subject. I think this story kind of proves that point - there's no reason to be shocked that somebody lost weight because they ate less calories than the usually do. That's really obvious, but people don't seem to understand that.

I can't tell you the stupid diet ideas I've heard people talk about and actually try, as if eating well, watching your intake and being active is so difficult. The HCG diet in particular is one of the dumbest ideas I've ever heard in my life, but people who want a supposed quick fix eat that **** up. If you want to make some serious money, put some marketing behind a ridiculous dieting scheme and you'll get a return on investment, I'm sure.

Take a hot female model and tell women that they got their body by eating cat turds out of a special cat's liter box and you'd have 40 million Americans literally eating **** 3 times a day.
 
I've lost 35 pounds since June by going to WeightWatchers and slowly increasing exercise. I do well with a diet of normal, healthy food and a little room for favorite snacks. Eat less, move more. It's not Pearlesque, but I'm very happy with my success so far.
