Observations from Pre-season & Early-season

I'm watching the Cavs & Pistons' first pre-season game. I know it's preseason, but it doesn't look good for either team. Both teams barely know what they're trying to do. It's helter-skelter, and neither has a full-team worth of talent. Brandon Knight and Kyrie Irving are matched up. Here are a few things I'm noticing:

- Brandon Knight is not really a true PG. He's more of a combo. He's quick enough and he can more or less get where he wants on the floor, but he doesn't seem to run an offense at this stage. He can shoot from NBA range, and he looks for his own offense quite often. It looks like he's going to put up a bunch of points. He can get into the lane, although he doesn't seem able to get all the way to the rim. He's got a green light, and it looks like he's already becoming the leader of the Pistons' team. I wouldn't be surprised if he has the highest scoring average of the rookies. I can see the young-Jason Terry comparisons.

- Kyrie Irving is more composed and a bit slower up the floor. He's always looking to make a pass and isn't forcing his own shot. He's having a hard time getting by Knight and other guards without a pick. He's a heady player, but he does look a bit small out there. Both teams are running some attempt at a Princeton-style motion offense, so it's not guard-dominated play, but Irving approaches the game like a floor general.

- Jan Vesely and the Wizards are playing the Sixers. Vesely is really tall and long. He's playing the PF. He's got good mobility for a PF, while he's not really quick enough to play SF. (My guess is that Perry Jones will be similar.) Vesely can pop or roll to the rim off the pick-and-roll. He likes to attack from out on the floor with one or two dribbles and a bank shot if he can't get to the rim. He doesn't seem to have much in the way of post skills, but he's got the length advantage to develop some. Expect to see some alley-oop plays to him reaching over the top from the weak side of the floor. He's an interesting, but not really impressive player. His whole game is based on length right now.

I'm bored.

I have to say, it looks to me like Brandon Knight is winning this first match up with Kyrie Irving. Irving is struggling against Knight's size and quickness. He's struggling with the speed and length of NBA players in general. I also have to say, Knight could be a special player. He's got a lot of energy, he's really quick around the floor, he's got a good IQ too. He's probably just a split step slower than John Wall, but he shoots better and seems potentially like a more complete player who plays both ends of the floor. Knight and Ben Gordon are a decent back-court combination. I can see why the Pistons are not in a hurry to pay Stuckey.

I have to say, the NBA Combine quickness drills don't mean anything. What matters is a player's speed and anticipation on the floor, not a sprint in a straight-away, or lateral quickness in a drill. Brandon Knight is plenty quick. He's like Visa--everywhere you want to be.

Tristan Thompson plays big and aggressively for a 6'8" PF. He's got a bit of Paul Millsap in him. He's a rotation player, but he has no touch outside the paint. He is also struggling to defend Greg Monroe in the post who has a couple of inches on him at least. Not sure he was a good call for the #4 pick.

I've recently really started doubting the Kanter pick. The Jazz have no PGs for down the road, and the one guy on the entire team that simply has to play is apparently 5th on the depth chart just of bigs.

The ONLY way the Kanter pick makes any sense is if someone gets traded. And soon. This isn't a guy that is going to make his strides in practice. THAT IS ALL HE'S DONE FOR MOST OF THE LAST TWO YEARS.

Yes. But to make you feel better, it's not like Kanter's had a chance to be able to play in games, well, in college anyway. That's not his fault per se. And he's still just 19. One year of practice and 10-12 minutes a game this season and he'll still be just 20 going into next season and Okur will hopefully be gone.

I have high expectations for Kanter. Just his strength, size and energy should make him an elite rebounder. He'll get his points too and get to the line.

I was impressed with Knight's potential. He's a smart kid, a good kid, and it seems to translate on the floor. It seems like he 'gets it.' He passes pretty well, and he can score from different angles.

I'm surprised the Cavs took Thompson over Biyombo. Can't wait to see that guy play.

Basketball players need to play basketball. Kanter has already missed on some critical development time. All that matters for him is real basketball. If he can't even get off the bench, get him to the D-League stat (even though it's not quite real basketball, it's more real than practice).

I'm going to delve into what I know a little here. Playing music live is not just a mechanical thing. It's not something you become good at just sitting in a sterile studio with a click track. To be good at it, you just have to do it to some degree, and you CERTAINLY have to play with others. I can't tell you how many musicians I've met that have cool chops but don't have the slightest clue on how to play real music. Live, or at all.

This is kind of where Kanter is at right now. He has to get out there and I am concerned he's going to have to wait for an injury. But we'll see.

I thought Knight played pretty well in stretches. He had a really nice stretch where he hit a 3, took Irving to the basket on a spin move, and set up a teammate on a pick n roll. He looked comfortable as well while I thought Irving looked lost.

I think Evan Turner will be the surprise breakout player this year. Granted I only saw the highlights but he looks much more comfortable this year than last.

The Wolves look like they'll be a better team this year, due in large part to their PGs (Rubio, Barea, Ridnour) and continued improvement from Beasley. Derrick Williams can also shoot NBA range. ROY candidate. Meanwhile, Anthony Randolph looks about the same, just struggling.

Watching the Warriors, I'm pretty sure they'll be in the lotto. They are the same team as last year, and Klay Thompson might struggle with the speed and athleticism of the NBA game.

I was impressed with the young talent of the T-Wolves. Rubio looked exciting to watch. He is going to have to get his jumpshot down if he wants to be a star. He doesn't have to be a great shooter but he needs to work on it. Kevin Love is a beast. They have a lot of scoring options and I believe the next 3 or 4 years there are going to be some epic battles between Jazz and the T-Wolves.

I was more impressed with GS. They seemed to be sharing the ball more. There defense effort was better but it might just be how bad the Kings played in the 1st half. All these teams with young players are going to be tough and our competition the next three years.

Watched Raptors -Celtics today. Was quite impressed by Raptors defense... you can feel Casey is making his defensive philosophy stick.... Even Bargnani was hustling for rebounds and diving to the floor which I never seen before. Ed Davis looked solid on the boards, he will be double double machine when it is all said and done. Was very impressed with James Johnson... never paid attention to him before but that kid can flat out play defense, was soaring for huge blocks and just overall crazy energy and doing all the dirty work on defensive end. Raptors offense on the other hand was atrocious - lots of TO, bricked jumpers and missed layups.
Jermaine O'Neal looked fat out there and Garnett, Allen and Rondo looked in good game shape. Celtics bench won the game at the end with some unknown stiff ( Stiemsma anyone? ) tipping in winning shot.
