What's new

Game Thread Oct 07, 2024 07:00PM MT: Houston Rockets @ Utah Jazz (Preseason)

Added to Calendar: 10-07-24

Holy crap, preseason one (league wise) and already seven pages. Looks like the secret is out! Count me convinced. We couldn’t touch this team last year! And from a nineteen point deficit with Hardy trying everything including the bathroom sink (the two JC’s)! And dam if it didn’t work!

People gotta quit complaining about our lack of lottery picks and look objectively at what we do have! Ainge and company haven’t missed a pick in the last two drafts.

Are we really in the Cooper Flagg sweepstakes this year? SI said no way after the Lauri re-up and after last night, I’m inclined to agree!

Cody Williams showed flashes that he can become the on the ball defender we lacked during the Gobert/Spida years. His measurables are virtually identical to Mikal Bridges and he carries himself similarly. If he gets a shot, he will be a difference maker no doubt. I can eat me some crow because I didn't see it even in summer league.

My big issue with the Jazz as currently constructed is that the front-court of Lauri/Walker/Hendricks just doesnt have enough on-ball ability. Cooper Flagg would fix that.

LOL.

We've seen him dribble against future plumbers and accountants.

There's absolutely no reason to think that Flagg can face up and handle the ball in the NBA.

I mean... we're probably all in agreement that Lauri can't really handle the ball or create in the league. Yet he can look like this playing against top international competition:

Also, CY, your analysis of games is really quite good. Thanks.

It's frustrating when you have to make posts so personal and ugly with posters because you see the game well. I expect a snarky comment to this just because history repeats itself, but I appreciate your soundbytes when they are about basketball and not just ripping people down.

Probably going to be the norm going forward. Kessler is going to get spanked by starters and Collins will be better against backups.
On the other hand whoever starts get to play more minutes with our better players (Lauri and Sexton) which should help that players plus minus Numbers

And Kevin Durant, LeBron James, Steph Curry, Anthony Edwards, Anthony Davis and the rest of team USA. And dominated.

Also not future plumbers or accountants and he did more than just dribble.

They were future Hall of Fame nba players who have pride and didn't want to be whooped up by a 17 year old kid. Yet we're powerless to do anything about it.

If I were the Jazz, I'd be optimistic about Keyonte, Brice, Filipowski and Cody Williams going forward.

Hendricks is mostly a spot-up shooter, though he's a nice defensive presence. Collier is probably a backup guard.

It looks to me like he's comfortable shooting from a few spots on the floor and uncomfortable everywhere else. He's got a way to go with his physical and offensive development.

You are salty about me ripping you for ripping someone?

This schtick has to get old for even you at some point.

You'd know something about that, right?

Anyway... I won't pretend to go along with the Flagg hype just because some people think legit opinions are a "schtick".

His ceiling is an NBA starter. Luckily, there's actual blue chip prospects in the draft.

Below is the video of Flagg's scrimmage with Team USA. I both think it's super impressive, but I also think the reaction was a little overblown.

People should watch and form their own opinion:

Sorry but I just don’t get it. Not only is he not the next Wemby, I don’t see a dang thing that separates itself from what we currently getting from Sensabaugh, check that (lower), Filipowski.

Collier will be fine. He's shown he can drive to the basket at will - he just needs to finish better and that will happen. I'm excited to see what he does in the next game. He's fearless.

Really hope he figures it out and can be the future table setter we haven’t had since Conley.

As far as what I could read of Cy's post, he didn't mention that Markkanen on ball creation nears someone like Kawhi Leonard, Lebron James, Kevin Durant or even a healthy Zion Williamson, nor that Flagg gonna be this good at that as these guys, either out of the gate, or at his peak.

What I could conclude out of it was that in that in the Lauri, Hendricks and Kessler frontcourt there's two guys that when the ball comes into their hands not for them to finish the play, the play is up to come to a stall, and adding a guy that's projected to have a whole different skillset than these two guys, would make a world off difference in that department. And I don't have much problem with those propositions.

I wouldn't want to be the Rockets though. They tanked a season for Jalen Green. Then they tanked a season for Jabari Smith. Then they tanked a season for Amen Thompson. Then they just got Reed Sheppard with a #3 pick. They don't have anyone on their roster who can be a top-40 player in the league.

People criticize Detroit, but I'm not sure Houston has done much better.

This is just the nature of tanking/relying on the draft. Everyone has it in their heads that when you tank you will draft 3 MVP’s in a row like OKC. Truth is you’re much more likely to be a Detroit or a Houston. The guys HOU has now used to be the guys people were going crazy about when they were draft prospects. If you look back at their draft record, each year picked the guy everyone would have taken (maybe not Reed but that draft was a toss up).

Draft is still somewhat of a crapshoot even when you’re consistently drafting in the top 5.
