What's new

Collier has no touch or craftiness which is concerning. He can get better, but he’s just so far away right now I worry it will never be good. Not getting the FT’s he was able to get in college either.
It's almost like scouts did their job which accounts for why he dropped where he did. If he can find touch and develop a good floater he could be really good.

You’re talking to Dante’s biggest supporter (he will still be great!).

I just think that with Cody, we’ll be touting his defense all the time as a distraction from the rest of his game or lack thereof. It reminds me of Dante. It’s great that he can play on ball defense well….but deep down we all know that’s not exactly what we had hoped we were getting in a player.

Current day Dante honestly isn’t a bad comparison. Dante is more of a combo guard and Cody more of a wing scorer, but I think there selling point will be their versatility on both ends…but also guys who are mostly in the background. I think he’ll fall somewhere in between current Dante and peak Batum.
as a dante hater (hater in the sense that i never thought he was any good and was definitely not surprised with how his first stint in the league turned out), i agree 100%. both players should be athletic, maybe are to an extent, but have trouble beating defenses with it/using it for anything useful other than defense. both seem to be pretty good defensively (they have to be because that's literally all they do), they both lack aggression to an alarming degree (part of that is that exum was just not good enough to do aggressive things - lets hope that isn't cody), neither does much in terms of getting to the line, rebounding, playmaking, etc (a lot of Snell-esque box scores), both are extremely inefficient scorers when they do actually try to score, and for both fans will make every excuse possible because the jazz drafted them so early and we NEED them to be good so we'll convince ourselves they are until we just can't anymore - again let's hope that isn't the case for Williams.

mostly let's just hope williams becomes good at basketball for the jazz rather than 10 years later for some other team. it's VERY early. stupid early for Williams and completely unfair to draw any conclusions at this point - the above is how it has played out to this point. that's all and it's all we have.

All our second-year players took a big step forward. Ans both of the third-year (Kessler, Juzang) too. This is the best one could hope for.

Yeah I guess the reason why I bring up the comparison is because whether you believe that have true ability or not, it’s not going to surface itself due to their lack of assertiveness. Neither is very active and both seem to be more concerned with not messing up rather than making a play.

It’s not necessarily the worst thing ever….but I suspect we’ll have a lot of Cardio Cody games. There’s always going to be some plausible deniability that he could do more if only if he were more aggressive…but the reality is (and this was true with Dante) that some of the passiveness is due to a lack of ability and skill and not all a mental thing.

His bad games won’t be 2-12 shooting kind of games. They will be the Snell games where he has 20 minutes and zero stats.

Dante was almost unplayable at both ends of the court for his first two years. He was like 3 years in before he showed he could even begin to be a primary on ball defender. There isn't really a comparison to be had quite yet.

really? i remember it differently. my memory was that he was a plus defender from essentially day one. not saying you're wrong but if true that's news to me.

That's how I remember it too

DedEx somehow found his way into Quinn's kennel club never to really escape. I guess the trade for JC worked out but could those 2nd round picks the Jazz had to throw in become Jalen Brunson?

My memory exum was try hard defense who put pressure on people but he fouled a lot and got beat.
This, and he looked perpetually gassed after exerting himself longer than 3 minutes. He wasn't in good enough shape to be a plus defender.
