Game Thread Oct 23, 2024 07:00PM MT: Memphis Grizzlies @ Utah Jazz

Added to Calendar: 10-23-24

For tank, the result was great but the game looked worrying. Ja was in his bag all night and Huff/Aldama shot lights out yet somehow we were able to come back from 17 down to lose by 2.

Lauri, Kessler, Clarkson and 4th quarter Hendricks were all awesome. Not sure Hendricks can get that kind of momentum going every game, but if he does then we got another good one in 2023.

Keyonte shot was so cooked he couldnt even hit his FT's. He made 5 with 9 attempts while Kessler made 4 with 5 attempts lol. Dont really think he took a lot of bad shots, but he just had no touch today which was especially visible on his floaters. I did love the alley oop passes to Lauri and few of the other assists he had, as well as the fact that he had just 1 turnover and didnt really sulk as much as he usually does when he has a bad game.

That game nearly gave me a heart infarction thank god the jazz pulled their heads out of their asses at the end. I don’t think George was bad, he missed shots and made questionable second year mistakes but had 7 assists to one turnover. I’ll take that from him.
It's going to take him some time to really have a feel for when he should look to score and when he should look to facilitate.

A little more pressure on him when he's on the court with three non-creators in Lauri / Hendricks / Kessler too.

Key is frustrating because he looks the part and makes so many nice plays but he is just so inefficient

Now that I think of it, Key may have had the jitters. 85% FT shooter going 5/9 from FT is sort of a tell that something was off.

Either that or he just wasnt feeling his shot.

Especially when it's an extremely competitive game and guys like Kessler shine and Hendricks shows some good flashes.

I thought Sensabaugh showed some nice hustle / energy at times too.
All of the young guys other than Keyonte look scared to shoot the ball

Need to see the young guys be more aggressive.

Hendricks / Cody / Sensabaugh = 9 FGA
Clarkson = 16 FGA

Ain't no reason he should putting up almost double the FGA as those three combined lol

Good effort tonight. Lauri and Walter were outstanding. Nice to see Walter at this level. Would probably trade JC to help the tank but we are looking good.
Clarkson and Collins both GTG.

We can probably move Clarkson at the deadline but I'd bet we're stuck with Collins until next year unless we're willing to attach some assets to move his deal.

Would prefer to see Flip get the minutes behind Kessler

Some other notes:
When is Collier supposed to be back? We have pretty much zero creation outside of George, especially off the bench.
Can Kessler / Lauri / Hendricks work together long term when basically none of them can pass?

Lauri really needs to improve as a passer. Stuck in my brain is that bullet he through to Cody (I think) when he was only 2 feet away, resulting in a turnover.

I don't think Memphis looks that great, I wouldn't peg them as a playoff team yet. They are relying a lot on unproven players in Edey, Wells, and Pippen Jr. I like all 3 of those players, but they will have growing pains this year.

I'm guessing there are some Edey doubters using this game as evidence they were right. He wasn't able to stay on the court and the defense was awful with him in the game. If you paid attention, however, you could see how much attention he was getting and how much that opened up shots for his teammates. The one truly concerning thing, in my opinion, was that Ja does not seem to like him. At the very least Ja does not want to give him the ball in the post. Memphis is probably better staggering their minutes and letting Edey eat in the second unit for now.

Keyonte is going to have good and bad games this year. The game threads will be unreadable if we continue to overreact to everything he does in his second year.
There is a group of posters who want to bash him whenever they can. Its the same guys every time.

Seems to me like they dislike his brand of basketball too much to root for the guy. Its definitely poorly founded to constantly jump on a 20 year old who plays as well as Key and who also gets a lot of hype/trust from the coach and vast majority of fanbase and media.

But it is what it is.

They will be a lot better when they get JJJ back

They've put a ton of pressure on him as a creator with the starting 5 we're rolling with early on, gonna need to find the balance of when to look to score and when to create

They were missing 3 rotation players...

They will be fine, actually great imo.
