If he opts out, but doesn't sign the 5 year max, I imagine that he'll sign an 2 year max deal with a player option for the 2nd season (like LeBron and Durant both have done). It's risky, but he's steadily improved each year he's been in the league. . . and he's already bet on himself once before. I'm hoping that he just signs the 5 year max the Jazz can give him, and ensures himself the most guaranteed money that he can get now so the Jazz don't have to keep doing this.

If he makes an All NBA team, I don't see any way that he doesn't opt in and take the Mega Max deal immediately. The only reasons for him to opt out are to A.) sign a short deal and try for the Mega Max extension next year, or B.) take the Jazz max 5 year offer after failing to make an All NBA team. Hayward at the DVP level helps the Jazz keep him for 6 more seasons. . . but at one of the highest contracts in the league.

Hill has ~ $12 million cap hold. Jingles has ~ $3 million hold. The best option for getting Muscala (which isn't a bad idea) would be to do a sign and trade with Atlanta getting Diaw (who they then cut) and a future draft pick. Not sure if the Jazz can fit him under the cap without unloading Favors, Burks and Diaw tbh.

This is exactly what I'm trying to say. Option A seems risky to me because he's playing one year for 14 mil more and he could get injured. How do people not comprehend this. He's risking 6-years 220 mil to earn 14 mil more for one season?

If he makes All-NBA he can't make the mega max until next year anyway......

He is going to opt out and sign a 1 year deal so he can get the mega max the next year or he is just going to sign a max contract this year. Either way he probably opts out.

It's not that risky. Hayward could tear his acl and someone would still max him out next year.

My understanding is that he can't make the mega max deal until the last year of his contract because of how long he's been in the league. If he opts in (giving him one more year on his deal), he can then immediately sign the 5 year mega max extension. He doesn't have to wait until next offseason. If I'm understanding things correctly, the DVP is intended to help teams identify and lock up star players a year before their contracts end - thus allowing teams the ability to keep their franchise players without forcing them to opt out before signing an extension.

In all likelihood he will probably sign a 5-year max deal here or a 4 year one elsewhere. The final year being a player option.

I can't recite all the rules but it does seem that speculation like this usually ends in the player just taking the guaranteed money.

Looking at the numbers, I think Hayward stays in Utah - especially since they're on an upward trajectory and his earning potential is significantly greater if he continues to improve. If he makes an All NBA player, I think he opts in and signs the mega max. I'd he fails to make the All-NBA team, I think he either opts out and signs a 1+1 Max with a player option and bets on himself next year, or opts out and takes the Jazz 5 year max with a player option for the last season. Essentially that gives him a TON of guaranteed money and a shot at getting another big contract in 4 years. I think he likely goes 1+1, but man. . . that's a lot of guaranteed money to pass up.

Opting in only makes financial sense if he makes the All-NBA team this year.
