Off-season Targets

Making a list of guys I want to target this off-season. Please feel free to chime in:

Liggins (UFA Cle) - intriguing young prospect who doesnt play because of the Cavs depth.

JJ Reddick (UFA LAC) - if we built like last off-season, I could see him being a logical target. We have the money, the need for shooting and probably a starting SG spot.

Patty Mills (UFA SA) - I would pursue Mills over Hill. He will be cheaper and is used to playing PG and PG/SG. His addition would compliment Exum so well long term. He is a shot creator.

Jonathan Simmons (UFA SA) - he plays with heart. He attacks the rim. He has a crazy career story and plays with a chip on his shoulder. We need his passion.

Paul Millsap (UFA Atl) - yes, I know. But he fits next to Gobert perfectly. He is not in place of Favors but in addition to him. If we get him, we decline Diaw's option. Millsap makes us a contender.

Taj Gibson (UFA OKC) - if we can't get a starter like Millsap, Gibson makes sense. He works hard and will be there when Favors is hurt. He could play when Diaw is too slow.

Mike Scott (UFA Pho) - wildcard/reach here. He played under Quin at Atlanta. He can really spread the floor at PF.

I would do the following:

Re-sign Hayward
Sign Millsap
If affordable, re-sign Hill. If not, sign Mills.
Re-sign Ingles or sign Reddick
Sign Simmons or Liggins

Let Mack, Diaw and Withey go.

Wow. Jazz fans set there sights really low.

I just dont know how good an aging Millsap is against the Warriors. His last 4 games (the past two years) he is shooting 30% against them.

#1, he's not playing with Gobert or Hayward. #2, he is better than Diaw in every single category and it's not close.

He's a 4 time all star who helps in every area. He actually extends his career if he got to play with Gobert and Hayward.

Ok, but I dont think he helps us beat Golden State in any meaningful way. He doesnt help us improve speed or athleticism and his shooting is mediocre. I would be OK with signing him, but I wouldn't pay him over 20 million. I also wouldn't pay him over George Hill. If I had a choice between Hill at 25 million and Millsap at 20, I'd take Hill.

And he might be a 4 time all-star, but that's in the East. He has never made an All-NBA team and he doesnt exactly propel his game in the playoffs. His efficiency becomes awful from the field and 3 and he basically relies on getting to the FT to retain any efficiency.

Not trying to hate on him, I'm just not paying him what he probably wants (and might get from another team). He isnt better than Hill IMO.

I'd like to see the current team minus Mack with a healthy playoff roster. Although the Jazz has had so many injuries over the past few seasons, not sure that is realistic.

I'd also like to see offensive sets that get us more easy post scoring opportunities. Don't see that happening either.

I disagree completely. With Millsap, Green couldnt help so much on Hayward and Gobert. Millsap can create shots, get to the line and cause foul trouble. Adding him would be massive.

A 100% healthy Hill would help us, but his health is a major concern. Even when healthy, he is more of a defensive liability against Curry and Klay than Millsap would be against Green and Iggy. Millsap is a fantastic post defender because of the little things he does.

I think we can keep both. If we can get them both for 3 years and a combined $40-45 million, we are a contender if Hill's toe can get to 100%. Big if...

Millsap is going to want a 4 year deal. He recognizes this is his last hurrah and has never really been paid what he's worth. He's not a stretch 4 (a little over 30% the last two years).
Part of it is us wanting to turn back time and make up for letting him walk. You can't do that. This is a much older Millsap, and a much more expensive Millsap. Pass.

I understand the concern but what other options do we have to get a player that good? I don't see any. We dont have the trade bait.

We gave Joe J twice over $10 and he was older with much more minutes played than Millsap. I think locking up Millsap early is the best sales pitch to Hayward. Staying as is or just getting a low end guy like Taj Gibson might not do it.

How much will Millsap command? I'm also curious after all the monster deals last year if salaries will have come down to earth a little.

I am guessing that Millsap will want $22+ per year for 3 years or around $20 per year for 4 years. What he wants and what he gets could be different. And honestly, I would pay that if it meant keeping Hayward.

If we lose Hayward, we either lose Hill too or we overpay to keep him. Hill without Hayward is practically worthless. If we sign Millsap and re sign Hayward, we put pressure on Hill to re sign at a fair number. This would be the last best chance for Hill to compete as a starter.

As for salaries, they will only go up. The salary floor has gone up again. Mozgov got $16 per, TristanT got $16.5+ per, and Noah got $17+ per last year. None of those guys are or will be Millsap who has been the cornerstone on a perennial playoff team.

We wouldn't be able to sign Millsap without addressing Hill and Hayward first because of cap hits. And if we re-sign both then we're forced into a sign-and-trade if we want him.
