What's new

Official Announcement! Gameface Poker Resurrection -- Saturday Apr. 23rd @7pm

I also loved meeting Omar Siro and @changeyourdamnname devgchr ;). There's little more I enjoy than meeting new Jazzfanzers. This place has some genuinely good people, and they also usually happen to be very intelligent which makes for a unique experience.

It's everything it's advertised as. He brews some of the best beer I've ever drank. I have even liked some of his styles that I typically cannot stand.

The IPA I had was flawed. My last half dozen batches, right up to the Third Cousin has had a flaw that I've been trying really hard to track down. I've done ridiculous amounts of cleaning, sanitizing, made sure ingredients were fresh and have spent a few hundred replacing stuff. That IPA was soooo good until it carbed up. Then it had the same issue as several previous batches. I was only left with one thing, the CO2 tank. Until recently AirGas would fill your CO2 tank on the spot. But they changed their policy and you can either leave your tank for several days for them to fill it or you can exchange it for one that's already full. So I swapped tanks. Anyway, the tank I had been using on my most recent beers wasn't empty but I was so disappointed that the IPA developed the same flavor as my other recent batches and I had to keg the Third Cousin in time for the poker game so I went and swapped that tank out. For the first time in several months I have a beer that did not develop that off flavor. Ugh, I'm glad that **** is over.

It's not like the beer was undrinkable, but it has a very noticeable harsh aftertaste. I've heard that rust inside the tank can cause issues, so I'm thinking that's what it was.

Nothing worse or more annoying than slow poker, if you've got a massive decision take 3 hrs idc but if you're sitting on 2 pair with a flush and straight draw on the board and you get pushed all in, gtfo in a reasonable amount of time..

I hate IPA but thought the one of yours I tried was very drinkable.

Sounds like you need to get a job at a paintball store for free CO2.

It's an everybody thing. If the Jazz got Durant, they'd win the championship next season.
I'm starting to think I'm being trolled.
You honestly believe if the Jazz add KD and drop Chris Johnson (or pick any other player on the team) they win the championship next season?

Nice to meet you, you're a JF favorite of mine.

NavaJoe was fine with it. Apparently him and the tall dude (Curtis?) were sparring a bit during the game. That guy seemed really cool to me and Joe liked him too.

I also didn't like some of the table talk, players not in hands commenting on hands. I strictly play poker for fun now and don't care as far as it goes for my specific purposes, but it is obnoxious for those who are competitive with the game.

It was good to meet you as well. I assumed when I had a notification that you quoted my post I was worried I was being called out on a lazy drunk post.

Pretty sure I was responsible for a lot of the table talk, I am pretty casual and get bored during poker. This was about as serious of a poker game as I want to play these days.

The only time I think table talk is an issue is when it alters the way the people in the hand play. So really, if you call their attention to a possible flush or clue them into a tell you've picked up on. Stuff along those lines. And between hands pretty much anything goes. I don't think the table talk was way over the top at all.

And if anyone asked me how much you had had to drink, Broncster, I would have guessed 2-3 beers and that you were probably below 0.08 BAC.

Since I frequently volunteer for the UHP to do field sobriety tests I know I hold my booze pretty well. I assumed if my talk was getting to be too much you wouldn't hesitate to say something and I would have listened and respected that.

I didn't notice any from you. I thought your quiet table had all their lips superglued together.

To add to what GF said, "table talk" is a poker term for people who aren't in a hand and alter the play by either tipping someone off or by talking to someone in a hand. Personally, the latter annoys me as long as it does not impede the pace of play. If we are having a conversation before the hand then why stop in the middle of a hand?

Also, I really don't care if you want to discuss a hand that I'm in. We aren't playing Phil Ivey or Tom Dwan (the two best poker players on the planet). If a player wants to take advice about what I have then I will find a way to use it against you. Back in my semi-pro days I did this a ton since I knew pretty much everyone's game and they thought they knew mine. That's why pretending to have pocket aces made me plenty of money. Siro, look into that strat.

A little late, but here are some pics of the final few players.

So, the origin of the mystery beers...

Last year I served as a steward at the Beehive Brew Off. When the competition has been judged they basically open up the the refrigerated trailer full of beer and tell the judges and stewards to please take it all off their hands so they don't have to deal with it. There was easily 500 beers in there. I'm not sure exactly how many there really were, but 500 is a very conservative estimate. about 8 of us went in and loaded up. A few who were more experienced than me knew what they were looking for. I took about 48 beers total and stopped because I didn't want to take too much, but honestly I could have taken 100 beers or more and no one would have batted an eye.

You don't have to have anything to do with homebrewing to be a steward at the Beehive Brew Off. I plan on doing it again this year. If anyone wants to come with just let me know. At the competition stewards organize the beers and provide them to the judges. They pour what they need to judge the beer and there is usually about 4oz left over per bottle. As a steward you are free to sample and compare notes with the judges. They'll usually tell you if there is one you should try. In fact, when they have a really good one they tell the event organizers to check it out.

It's pretty laid back. It's a good way to learn about the beer competition process. Both the owner of Salt City Brew Supply and Beer Nut are there and several local homebrewers turned pro-brewers too. Great way to meet the people involved in Utah's local beer industry. Many of the judges were employees of the local breweries.

Oh, and they provide breakfast and lunch. It all happens at the Bayou, and the Bayou makes the lunch.

Seriously, hit me up for details. I'll be there and they can usually use a few extra stewards.

Isnt this coming up soon? Some day next month? Any chance they still need volunteers. I would still love to help out at it or be apart of it in anyway.

Yes, judging takes place on the 20th and 21st of Aug.

Should I do something to volunteer with them? I saw they had some contact form thing to volunteer.
I think it's pretty informal, but you could register at the beehive brew off site and indicate you're available to steward. But really, if you show up at the Bayou at 9am on the 20th and say you're there to steward they'll put you to work.
