Official Jazz workouts thread

This has almost nothing to do with size and a lot to do with the fact that perimeter defense isn't allowed. If they draft Larkin, I'll root for him although I agree based on MY knowledge (which is admittedly limited) he wouldn't be my pick at 14.

No.

You are wrong.

It has everything to do with size. Even when they could play perimeter defense a few years back you rarely saw anyone under 6 feet having much success in the NBA.

If we're merely going for a bandaid solution at the point, I'd much rather see us sign Teague or reup Mo than waste a draft pick on larkin. Use that draft pick on a better prospect. Heck, even use it on a foreigner who won't come over for another year or two.

Drafting Larkin @14 is insane. There are so many better options at the PG position let alone at other positions. You draft a guy like Larkin in the late 1st round early 2nd round. You don't draft them in the teens. Besides, even if he does pan out, he will forever be a defensive liability just about every single night. As Jazz fans, aren't we being tired of having our PG position be such a liability? I for one am. I'm getting tired of opposing PGs scoring 30+ on us as our PGs put up little to no resistance.

Man, with as many holes as we have to fill it's amazing that fans are actually considering Larkin @ 14. Dude is at best a career backup ala Nate Robinson or Earl Boykins.

Whether Jazz fans want to admit it or not, but the NBA is evolving. Judging from the way we have developed our young players (by not playing them) and with our stubbornness to use the 3 point shot (last year was the first year that we let it rip from deep) we have a long way to go to join the 21st century NBA. Even the Spurs have adjusted. It's time we do too. We need to get bigger, faster, stronger, and use the pick and roll to set up Kanter/Favors dunks and 3 point chucks from our guards.

No more Alfrense.

Talks alittle 'bout Larkin--he's an athlete who can also play and a great leader.

Says bigs are valued higher at the draft because there are fewer 6-10 guys who are skilled and many more 6-3 guys who are skilled.

Talked again about moving up or down or buying draft picks by taking on salary.

Gunther has a major snafu, and Lindsey has no sense of humour.

I am glad they are bringing in Glenn RIce Jr. and Pierre Jackson. I rather draft Jackson at 46 instead of take Larkin at 14. There isn't much difference talent wise and Jackson could be a spark plug off the bench. Neither Larkin or Jackson are NBA starters so why waste the 14th on Larkin.

Not a big fan of Tony Mitchell. I think he gets overhyped because of his athleticism. The problem is he thinks he is a SF while he is an undersized PF. He didn't improve last year while playing inferior competition. I question his work ethic.

I would consider Glenn Rice Jr. at 21 (even though that may be a tad high at this point) but if the kid has grown up, he has a TON of talent. Very good rebounder for his size and can create his own shot. It would be interesting to know how Bullock performed, I like him too at 21.

A draft of Schroder and Glenn Rice Jr. would be awesome than the Jazz could maybe pick up Iverson at 46 or even Jackson or Pressey at 46.

I agree with just about everything you said except that I still hold out hope that Mitchell can be a high risk/high reward type pick. He could defend bigger 3's and he can also handle most 4's.

I would rather have Jackson at 46 over Larkin at 14 or even 21.

GR2 is also very intriguing to me. He is also another high risk/high reward type pick. I would like it if he turned out to be a Battier-type meaning that he can hit the outside shot and also play defense and contribute the little things needed for winning.

I'm not a fan of Jackson but I'd prefer to spend the 46th pick on Pierre than the 14th on Larkin. I agree with you they're both backups. - so get the one that costs less.

In his Jazz interview he said he's a 4. I took note of it because I only want him if he's a 3. I understand your being down on him though (last season doesn't help his cause) but he is pretty athletic and I think he'll be really good defensively.
Let me qualify that: he's be good defensively IF HE TRIES (which he might not - and why we're scared of him).

I like both of them at 21.

I'd like Iverson at 46 if he's there. 3rd big.

At 21, you're hoping for bench/rotational players. In that sense, Larkin is great and so is Olynk.
If we draft either of them at 14 though, then we're ****ed.
Agree. Larkin at #21 might be good value. And I love the fact that Favors & Burks were working out. Murphy and McNeal showing dedication too. Gotta love bench players that bust their tails. Where's Gordo?

I think I'd rather have Wolters than Larkin.

There's also a slew of players I'd rather draft at #21 than an undersized PG.

McCollum will be working out with the Jazz before June 20th. Also it's good that Schroeder is going to go against Siva on Friday.

Great news re Siva. We need somebody quick to test Schroeder's speed. Siva (Pitino's lieutenant) should also put plenty of pressure on Schroeder's handle.

First Zeller, now McCollum. I know these guys need a backstop, but I'm ready to guess the Jazz have a deal to move up into the top 8 or 9.

I mentioned it once before, but if Minny likes Caldwell-Pope or Glen Rice Jr.--a SG with more size than McCollum--they could get those guys at #14. There's also Franklin and Karasev.

Hey are you sure Siva is here for the Friday workout, and not for tomorrow's? He's already in Salt Lake:

Finally in Salt Lake City ...

Is he here early to prepare?

The thing about Larkin that worries me....

Lawson is good and got paid a bunch of money, but Denver has to play Miller along side him for major minutes.

Nate Robinson can be terrific. One year in NY he tore it up for, but they couldn't/wouldn't pay him or traded him or something.

Isaiah Thomas (from Sac) short high energy and Sacramento played him 27 mpg on way to 28 wins. Speedy Claxton, Terrell Brandon, Tyus Edney, Damon Stoudamire, Brevin Knight, Travis Best, Dana Barros. Had flashes and then burned out quickly or could not handle being the starter. Might Mouse might be the best player but he got out of the first round twice. And Portland overpaid him and the team couldn't move forward because of his limitations but he was also too valuable for them to give up. Not a place I want me team to be.

So long Burks?

Or Salary dump AK to Jazz?

Neither sounds appealing.

Guys Larkin's size can't really defend guys several inches taller and rangier. They can only cut off one side of their player really, and in many cases they can't bother the shot if his guy gets a step off a pick. They also have to overcommit on defense, and it makes it easier to get them hung on a pick.

I'd trade #14 and #21 before I trade out Burks. It's a bit soon to give up on Burks. He was productive when he got time last year.

That said, I still like Adams, Giannis and other players at #14.
