***Official new head coach search thread*** (merged)

Steve Kerr should avoid the La and new York jobs. Golden State should be his#1 the Jazz have no shot.

Can somebody please tell me what is Kerr's attraction as a head coach in the NBA? He has no coaching experience period. How can he be expected to just come in and weave magic?

1) He has front office experience.

2) Apparently everybody thinks he has the kind of personality players can relate to and the tactical knowledge.

There's other things that are pretty thin as well. But nevertheless the guys in charge think he's ready and based on his work in Phoenix they wanna give him a chance.

Steve Kerr looks and sounds like a smart guy but I rather want the new coach to be an experienced one. Not a dinosaur coach like George Karl or Sloan but a seasoned, crafty coach. We had already made a mistake when we gave a young rebuilding roster into a rookie coach's hands, I don't want us to do the same thing again and hire another inexperienced one.

The best part about hiring Messina is that the Lakers would probably do something stupid like hire Fisher to make up for it. Although from the list of others they appear to be considering, I just might take Fisher. . .

GS would be a great situation. Article mentions his daughter is at UC-Berkeley. GS has the players, a solid ownership group, good FO. NY has Dolan and cap problems; LA has the Buss siblings, an aging Kobe and a rest-home ready Nash. W's job comes with high expectations, though; that's the drawback. Kerr could be gone in 2 years if W's don't contend. He'd get more support from his buddy, Phil, in New York, although he may have already started to burn bridges by not jumping at the opportunity.

Wow, Jeff Hornacek is the longest tenure coach in the Pacific Conference?

While Utah is obviously less attractive than some of the other coaching vacancies, we have one thing going for us: job security. I wonder if this is one of the reasons Corbin was allowed to finish out his contract.

It is not has high profile as soem other jobs (Lakers, Knicks) but I think Utah has it's own appeal. Family friendly, growing team with solid building blocks, job security (as you mentioned), history of winning and competing...

Somebody tell me why coaching the Warriors is a hot gig. They've got a couple of young really good players, then a bunch of guys who may not be in the league in 3 years. They've traded away a lot of draft picks. Unless they're hitting home runs in free agency I don't see these guys moving up from where they are to any significant degree.

Wow lol, that was fast. Did the sactown coach get let go as well?

No, bit of a trick. Both Doc Rivers and Mike Malone had a later hiring date than Hornacek (June vs. May). So all three have 1 NBA season of experience, but Hornacek is longer tenured by a month.
This season is not yet over, but I doubt any other coaches will be fired. So this year, with just five openings, was rather calm. Last year there were 13 coaching changes.

Because of curry plain and simple.

If you have a superstar or borderline superstar then you are better off than 80 percent of the league

No he's still there.

1. Hornacek (Phoenix) - hired 5/28/13
2. Malone (Sacramento) - hired 6/03/13
3. Rivers (Clippers) - hired 6/25/13
4. D'antoni (Lakers) - resigned 4/30/14
5. Jackson (Golden State) - fired 5/6/14

More than a couple. Two stars in Curry and Thompson who are both very young. Barnes and Green (who came on at the end of the season) are also young. And Bogut, Lee and Iguodala are not that old (29-31). They will have room to add a mid-range FA. They should be able to compete for home court for the next few years and probably are the favorites to win the Pacific. Clippers are up against the tax limit (over this season) and won't be able to add anybody. I doubt that whoever the NBA approves will have the authority to put/keep LA into the luxury tax.
