What's new

***Official new head coach search thread*** (merged)

This is what DX has said for the Jazz:

4 Utah Jazz
Dante Exum PG
18 years old; 6'6"; 188 lbs.
Australian Institute of Sport, International

While Exum will want to get drafted by a team that will let him play his natural position of point guard, a backcourt of him and Trey Burke (a Top-10 pick last year) could absolutely work together depending on the coach Utah decides to hire. Most teams have seen very little of Exum over the years, but Utah's scouting department, headed by Nike Hoop Summit World Team architect Rich Sheubrooks, doesn't have that problem. Julius Randle can't be ruled out here, as playing him together with Derrick Favors could work and may be one way to help shore up what was the NBA's worst defense last season.
I didn't know a Utah employee was in charge of putting together the World Team for the Nike Hoop Summit. All the more reason to think the Jazz are very familiar with Messina and could make great inroads in regards to international players by hiring Ettore. The model of success for the Jazz, given their inability to attract top FA's from the U.S., has to be concentrating on Euros. "Draft and stash" only works if the player then comes over to the NBA when he has a chance to contribute. Messina is the guy that can make that happen with Tomic and others like him.

Jazz have a TON of 2nd round picks over the next few years. Almost all of those should be used to reach for Euros with potential. The Jazz won't have many roster spots available after this season (provided they try to re-sign their young players). So keep some developing in the pipeline and bring them over as needed.

I get that there's an appealing pedigree about being associated with the Spurs and you can make some arguments that paint it in a positive light. However, the Spurs also hired Scott Layden. Dennis, thus far, seems to have done a good job for us coming from the Spurs, but the last time we got an unremarkable talent from the Spurs that we had to give the "championship experience" sell for, it was Jason Hart. I kind of see Boylen as Jason Hart, except everyone already hates him and probably won't fall for the spin.

If there are all these clowns in these positions and yet they are up 2-0 int he second round obviously they are doing something right.

With all due respect Stoked--- are you implying that Boylen's contribution is what makes the Spurs success run? My take would be that with you or even me in Boylen's seat nothing would have been different. In other words Boylen's impact on the team is probably less than the equipment manager. That he hasn't blown that team up the way he did the Utes is due to the fact that he is the second banana and Pops is a tough sumabeach that would not let that happen.

What I've seen from the spurs is that Pop is so good it doesn't matter who his assistant coaches are.

I think it is that they are amazing judges of talent and effective at maximizing those talents. Perhaps Boylen is only assistant material but San Antonio maximises that.

Ever noticed too that the assistant coaches don't get off the bench during timeouts. It's just the players and Pop.

I am not arguing that at all. Just saying that perhaps the people are not as bad as Hotnickkk implies. If there are all these clowns in these positions and yet they are up 2-0 int he second round obviously they are doing something right.

...and I evidently made a poor effort of agreeing with you, Stoked.

I see writing Boylen off as completely worthless as an emotional reaction by locals to the trainwreck he presided over while at the U. Based on that alone, he really would be a horrible choice for the Jazz-- and I personally hope it doesn't happen-- but he's obviously got considerable value as an assistant.

My new theory is that the Jazz are and always were going to hire Messina, but DL is doing Boylen a solid in smokescreening his name as a possibility. Generally that happens for a couple years before an assistant gets a shot. Then you get "Jim Boylen who was in serious consideration for the Jazz head coach job last year, is among the finalists for the Milwaukee Job. . ." That is the theory that makes me the most happy, unless the Warriors try to jump the Jazz and hire Boylen away. That would make my entire year!

So I'm lazy and can't be bothered reading 51 pages and excuse my ignorance but what's with the Boylen hate? As in what is it that he did that's got everyone's ire?

Trashed the U of Utah basketball program.

I would like to agree with you, but I'm concerned that it will not be Messina. I don't want my dreams shattered. I do believe the jazz have already selected their guy, but they are waiting while their guy finishes his current job. The evaluation and hiring process is to help the fans 'conclude' the hire is the right guy and build some confidence in the stability and wisdom of the FO.

Read between the lines here...it's a quote from an article in the Trib re: Longabardi. DL's response really isn't about Longabardi in particular. The author just notes the two haven't met yet.

"We’re working hard on the internal due diligence and we’ll have an ability here very soon to react quickly, or go through a very thorough and prolonged search," Lindsey said.

To me, this really does say that Lindsey has likely identified his target and is just waiting for that person's season to end before a formal offer is made. Then, if the sides agree, it will be a quick hire. If they don't, Lindsey will start the Plan B interviews (the prolonged search).

EuroLeague finals are May 16-18. Really hope to hear something after that. I would be incredibly proud to have the Jazz make a groundbreaking hire. Would put us on the map WORLDWIDE!
Hey, on that note, I read a French men's futbol team just hired a female manager. How about it, Dennis...I know Pat Summitt has health problems, but maybe Tara VanDerveer? Or hire a man currently coaching a woman's team (Geno Auriemma).

A New York Post article ranks the Jazz as third best coaching opening. A good article overall.

3. Utah Jazz

Pros: Massive salary cap flexibility; several young, blue-chip talents on the roster; top-five pick in this year’s draft, plus extra picks this year and in future years; stable ownership.

Cons: Small market that isn’t for everyone; question of how much ownership will spend; uphill battle to progress in ultra-competitive West.

The lowdown: The Jazz job is in many ways the opposite of the Knicks job. Utah has barely any money on its books, with over $30 million available heading into this summer before Gordon Hayward’s restricted free agency is resolved. Along with Hayward, the Jazz have a pair of good, young big men in Derrick Favors and Enes Kanter, a good young point guard in rookie Trey Burke and a pair of first-round picks in this year’s talent-rich draft – including a top-five pick that has a decent chance to move up to the top overall selection.

Combined with an incredibly stable ownership/front office structure, that gives this job the kind of long-term security few in the NBA offer these days. The Jazz gave Ty Corbin three-plus years on the job, including letting him coach out the final year of his contract this season when many teams would likely have parted ways with him after the 2012-13 season.

The problem is the Jazz are in the Western Conference, where it’s incredibly hard to move up the ladder. But between the amount of young talent on the roster and the long track record of patience by ownership, this is a job that promise some longevity.

Ideal candidate: None. The Jazz have said they are going to interview “20-plus” candidates for this opening, so it’s hard to say what direction general manager Dennis Lindsey is going.

Intriguing candidate: Ettore Messina. Long considered one of the world’s best coaches, Messina’s name has come up in connection with a variety of NBA jobs, and he would become the first foreign coach in NBA history. A four-time Euroleague champion, Messina is the definition of intriguing.

Pfft. A nice suit is awesome.

Probably the difference between CA and UT. You just don't see men wearing suits suits anymore in major companies (outside of formal meetings). Even ties have disappeared. Now, even in the conservative Finance/Accounting departments men generally just wear a nice dress shirt open at the collar. Of course, NY might be more staid.
