What's new

***Official new head coach search thread*** (merged)

Salaries are definitely going up in the NBA. In 2005, Sloan was the 2nd highest paid coach and making only $500,000 more than Kerr. Today, he'd still crack the top-five, but that only assumes other coaches aren't given similar deals. A decade ago, ten coaches made less than two-million a year (with seven making a million). Today, zero coaches are making less than two-million a year. Jeff Hornacek, from what I can tell, is the lowest paid coach in the NBA at two-million exactly. No coaches in 2005 made more than $6.9 million (that was Rick Adelman's salary back when he coached the Kings - the highest in the league). Today, Stan Van Gundy and Doc Rivers both make seven mill.

The increase hasn't been dramatic, but the going rate for a head coach has inched up at least a million since 2005 (it looks like it was one-million a year back then). So, you can expect most rookie head coaches (sans the anomalies like Kerr) to make somewhere around two mill. Hollins would probably go for four-million with his resume.

Kerr seems to be the exception still, though, and most likely got that salary because he started a bidding war between two teams willing to pay out for a head coach they think can turn into greatness.

There are exceptions, of course, as Brad Stevens pulled in 3.6 million his rookie season. But two-million seems like a good starting point right now for most new coaches. It'll be interesting to see where it goes in five years since the trend is clearly going up (as it is in college sports, as well).

+rep for anyone who makes an "average head coach salary vs. MLE salary" graph. My theory is that the coaching salaries have just increased by the same percentage as the MLE. But I don't really know.

It has been stated multiple times by various sources that the Jazz have 20 names:

In no order
1. Messina
2. Stockton
3. Boylen
4. Adrian Griffin
5. Lionell Hollins
6. Quin Snyder

Wonder who the other 14ish people are.

Alex Jensen. Lionel hollins are two if them. We should have a running list of names that sources have confirmed are on the list.

Have we hired anyone yet?

I think with the volume of workouts that Lindsey/Perrin want, the Millers likely told them to find savings elsewhere. So, in the absence of many of the top prospects attending the combine, they're just doing coaching interviews instead.

Thank you

Now that that is established...my point is that john wouldn't drive the team into the ground. If he wasn't successful, out of sheer loyalty to the millers, he wouldn't continue to coach. You wouldn't have to fire him. Play with semantics all you want, but he wouldn't continue to coach if he sucked at it.
Would he take another job within the organization? Well, if one was offered to him, and if he felt he could help the organization in that role, then sure...he might do that.
But....that is a bit of a hypothetical from the original thought.

I got it. Thanks for typing so slowly, it made an argument that seemed at first to be comical to be lucid, logical and bulletproof. If Stock sucks at coaching he'll quit. It's cast in concrete. A sure thing. A done deal. Couldn't happen any other way. You couldn't possibly be wrong. Thank you for sharing your clairvoyance and wisdom.

Dude, you are jumping tracks, get the ADHD under control.

You made a sweeping condemnation of those who say "the game has changed" and asked in an accusatory way: "have you not been watching the Spurs these past few years?" One can infer that you meant that the Spurs today embody the game of yesterday, that they are bastions of conservative basketball.

I merely pointed out that on many dimensions the Spurs are leading innovators and not an embodiment of the past.

To the "the game has changed" crowd. Yes the game has changed but it has also very much remained the same. Have you not been watching the Spurs these last few years?

Read the post again and try to take stock of bold. I was heading off the argument that I have heard before that the game has left guys like Stockton behind. I just simply don't agree with that.

The adhd bit is cute. I did qualify my original statement with "Yes the game has changed" and all further clarification has been in response to you. I am not sure how I have offended you but ok.

I was a too easily offended, I apologize. You have some very good points.

Wonder if Messina will say, "see you in Salt Lake" as he shakes hands with Tomic after the game.

Messina is done coaching in Europe he has to disembark in Nba!

Same story for Tomic....he won't win the Euroleague so easily...today his team got demolished by Real Madrid....two years ago he lost against Barcelona when he was playing for Real Madrid!
He is a top player but I think he is considered a loser in Europe...so it is time for him to try the Nba experience!

I tried the new sarcasm font there, I guess it still missed.

In real news....

From "Utah’s electric wing stud"

“I’m definitely pulling for Earl (Watson) to get the job(Jazz Headcoach),” Jazz forward Gordon Hayward told CSNNW.com via phone Friday morning. “He’s a great guy and has a great basketball mind. If he did become our coach and I got to play under him, it would be great because I know how hard he’ll work and prepare us. He’s a true professional and I think no matter where he ends up, he’ll be a great head coach in the NBA.”

0c0sKA is done in the euroleague but I think they are still going in some other russian league or something-- help me, euro posters.

So Messina is done then right? No more games?

If so I wonder how fast we start hearing rumors about Messina and the Jazz.
Nope, VTB continues.

Isn't CSKA involved in another playoff series. Did they already lose that one, too?
Yep. Nope.

Yep, it's Russian league.

yes 0-2 behind v Kuban. 22nd is the next game (away the next 2 before g5 at home)
This.

Other than the Euroleague 3rd place game on Sunday against Barca, CSKA still continues in the VTB league(Russian league). They will have to play at least one game, on 22nd of May against Kuban. If they lose that game, then Messina is done in Europe completely. If not, it depends and can prolong till the 17th of June!
