It was terry porter who slowed their offense down. He came right after Mike D'Antoni left for NY. Terry Porter is the guy who wanted to play slower and more defensively.
It was Gentry who came after Porter who actually sped things up again. Gentry is a D'Antoni disciple. After Gentry, came Hornacek.

Were there other variables contributing to his decline? Like.... Ohhhh I don't know... THE GM BLOWING UP THE TEAM?
The phx example alone should tell you that it wasn't Gentry's fault. They clearly wanted to rebuild. Hell, Gentry having success early on was actually something they didn't want because it prevented them from tanking. In fact, I'm absolutely sure a few higher ups and some fans were probably pissed in Hornacek's success. Good enough to play themselves out of a top pick. Bad enough to miss out on the playoffs. The Suns are where we were a few years ago. The primary differences being that they're younger and actually have a head coach.
The clippers job? Sucked until they got Blake one year and the league gave them CP3 the next. So that doesn't count. Phil Jackson and JSlo couldn't have taken them to the playoffs before CP3 and Blake.
The Pistons job? Sucked at that time too. After the lockout season, the pistons lost their #1 big man, Bison Dele aka Brian Williams. He left the NBA and His brother murdered him. Joe Dumars had just retired and Grant Hill had just jumped ship to Orlando.
Their roster was in need of an overhaul. Pistons needed to blow up their team and start over. Can't blame Gentry for that.
As I remember, sheed was still in porty, Rip was either at UCONN or Washington, Billups was bouncing around the league, Prince was either in HS or at Kentucky, and Big Ben Wallace was playing for Orlando.
I don't remember but wasn't Money memo still in turkey? They were all brought together in the early 2000s by Dumars under Rick Carlisle and then later, Larry Brown.
Gentry seems to be the guy who takes bad jobs. He becomes the HC right at that transition when the previous core is aging/leaving and the franchises are in need of a rebuild.

That's really a pathetic list for the Jazz to be honest wichu. Can't we get any of the bigger name coaches to come for an interview? Why are we bothering with these has-beens and small fries?

New York and LA are in need of coaches.
We need to face it, Utah is in the bottom 5 destinations for head coaches and players. These people will only come here if nothing else pans out (or unless we overpay). It's been that way for as long as I can remember.
Hate to break it to some of you, but many pro athletes and coaches like good weather, Culture, diversity, non-cult/Iran like laws, breathable air (ask Marvelous Marv what he thinks about the inversion), and a night life. Salt Lake City isn't LA, NY, or Miami, as much as some of you apparently think it is. Even places like San Antonio, Phoenix, and porty offer 100x more in culture and lifestyle.
Hence, why we need to build this franchise via unorthodox ways. Scout and draft well and find a diamond in the rough coaching wise. We could have done that with Hornacek. But we decided we didn't want to officially fire Corbin (and let his contract expire).
I would look for someone to pick off of Doc's of Thibb's coaching staff if we don't like the current pool of coaches.
Sorry, but Phil Jackson, Pat Riley, Cal, Coach K, etc aren't just jumping to come to Utah. Lebron, Kobe, Blake, etc aren't exactly dreaming about playing in Utah. We gotta do things differently now because the harsh reality of being a small market in a weirdo state without a HOF head coach and 2 HOF players to make up for our shortcomings is hitting and hitting hard.
I mean, just look at us. The only FAs we have attracted lately are washed up vets. Look at our coaching pool! Yeah.... We got a lot of work to do.

Miami wasn't a destination until LeBron went there or until they got Dwayne Wade. The Clippers weren't a destination for any FAs until they got Blake Griffin and weren't a contender until the Chris Paul trade.
Yes, warm weather cities are going to have priority over cold weather cities. If you had a choice of course you would pick that. But I've seen a ton of professional players say they love Salt Lake and Utah in general. Saying it has "no culture" is just as ludicrous. You don't have to live here in the offseason. There are strip clubs, night life, and high end restaurants in EVERY NBA city. Claiming that cities "don't have" what players want is crazy.
What I expect Utah to do is do what other teams have to do, over pay for top talent to lure the best role players we can. This isn't the 80s anymore. Salt Lake is a world class city with world class venues and world class entertainment options. No, no city can compete with the "no state tax" states. That is tough to compete with anyways.

Miami might've not been a destination city compared to Los Angeles or New York, but it's silly to suggest they were some wasteland before Wade and James stepped foot on South Beach. This was a franchise that quickly rose to competitiveness and had some pretty decent teams in the 1990s. Wade also managed a title on his own before LeBron even joined him. So, that isn't a very good example. Miami is still a world class city in one of the largest states in the country - which has also benefited Orlando, another team that, like the Heat, quickly rose to NBA prominence after expanding.
I don't really need to get into the Clippers. 1) they were a poorly run team 2) the L.A. market was dominated by the much more known and successful Lakers up until recently. Those two factors played a role in why the Clips were not a contender - but let's be honest, if they were the lone L.A. team, their success would certainly be much bigger than it is today.
The Thriller is right. Salt Lake is probably the hardest market to recruit talent to because there is still a huge stigma associated with the state of Utah. That's our cross to bear and why we should cherish what the team actually did in the 90s (and it wasn't like they were much of a destination team then, either, even though they were one of the best teams of the 1990s - I'm sure I am not the only one who remembers the Rony Seikaly fiasco) because that type of success is unlikely to ever return.
The hope is that Utah can grab a semi-decent coach and build a team through the draft - and win ASAP before the talent becomes too big for the market.
To be perfectly honest i never thought the coaching search would be this quiet.... c'mon Lindsey .. do something!!!!!

The entire Utah Jazz history would like to say hello.
Out of all the teams in need of a new HC only two teams have hired their HC's and had payed a high price tag to do so. SVG got a good amount of cash and even more power, something the Jazz wouldn't be doing. Then Kerr got P A I D for his services to get snatched up so quickly, he's getting paid more then most HC's are getting paid and he's never been a HC, so again not something the Jazz would likely ever do especially for a never been HC.

He is; he's interviewing minority candidates so he won't be criticized for racism once he hires Boylen. Still holding out hope for Messina. Either way, both men are still coaching their teams in the playoffs, so can't interview until they're finished.

Unfortunately Messina and CSKA will be continuing at VTB League. CSKA won the 5th game(84-65) against Lokomotiv Kuban so they are in now F4. Their new opponent is Unics Kazan. It will be a series over three wins once again and there is a good chance for it to go the 5th game again, considering UNICS is a tough opponent. The good thing is, the games are not too sporadic.

Same with me. My heart stopped for a brief moment. Wow! After a couple of close games, CSKA just killed them. Messina must know how to motivate, bringing them back from the brink of elimination.
If CSKA keeps winning, I just hope the Lakers don't snatch up Boylen while DL is waiting to interview Messina.

Lol, sorry guys. I wrote that in a hurry. I thought I put a phrase like "for a while" or "a little bit longer" into the sentence, but apparently I didn't.
Anyway, at worst, Messina will be free on June 17, so no problem with the draft date at least.
