They will match the offer. The question then becomes "What does Hayward need to average to actually earn this contract?"

With all the cap space laying around, someone was bound to offer a contract like this. Hayward played the system perfectly. The Jazz have to decide how they're going to handle it. I think they always expected this and they're prepared to match the contract.

This would be a decent option, except that the Hornets aren't going to give the Jazz anything if value to secure this. It's a game of chicken. If the Jazz match, no sweat - they just move on. If the Jazz pass - they get their target.

Why would Hornets ever do this?

I think they want Hayward paired with their players so they can be a higher seeded playoff team, not give up players for Hayward.

Assuming they will just go after Parsons if this fails.

Jazz going to wait til the last possible second to match to stick it to the Hornets. Hopefully they miss out on some FA they would have liked to get.
