Official UofU homer thread

I think I jumped into an argument and now it's unclear what each of us are saying.

All that I'm getting at is that voters should vote with more freedom instead of having to keep a team highly rated if they had them there last week.

Looks Like tons of voters did just that with Utah this week in the AP, and I'm not complaining at all.

Rankings should be a fresh week by week thing, not just a marginal update from week to week.

I know what you are saying and I know you aren't one of the ones complaining about how it is, even though you disagree with the way it's done.

The problem with the "fresh" theory is how "fresh" do you want it? What would you rank Ohio State with the "fresh" ranking approach?

I have to agree with Cy about the rankings...

As silly as anyone might think the preseason rankings are, fact is you must have a baseline to work from. Without it, I think any existing biases would be even more pronounced.

I think Utah received reasonable rankings based on their performance. I'll probably take some **** for this, but I think Utah had one of those games against Oregon where they played better than they actually are. I do believe they could win the conference, but it will take tremendous focus and discipline. They aren't going to beat everyone in the same way they beat Oregon.

I'll post my rankings in a minute

Ute fans, don't sweat the rankings. While I may not agree with them either, things are going to take care of themselves if Utah keeps winning. In the MWC days, the rankings were a million times more crucial when Utah was trying to move up in an effort to bust the BCS.

Utah's next game is vs a ranked Cal team. Hopefully, UCLA will still be undefeated and ranked higher than us when they come to SLC. USC should still be ranked when we play in LA. Arizona will be ranked. The point is, when you factor in the PAC 12 schedule and a possible conference title game, Utah's going to get enough quality wins to put them where they need to be at the end of the season.

Last night was exciting, and that's not even doing it justice, but we've got a long way to go with a very tough schedule ahead of us. I wanna see this team continue to play like we've seen last night and win a few more big games before I worry about getting hosed in the rankings.
I totally agree. I'm not worrying about the rankings. I'm making fun of them.

You are stuck on a previous poll. The ranking last week should not matter when picking a new top 25. The teams they played should matter but not the arbitrary ranking you gave them the week before. Especially this early in the season. Therefore you are not dropping them in the ranking's. You are reassessing the ranking they have earned. And to do that you should enter each weeks polls with a clean slate and re-rank based on current merit not past merit.
This would be so much more sensible, and it would properly reward teams for scheduling tough.

No it's not. Until it's an 8 team playoff it will always be ****ed up. When they go to 8 teams the polls will become virtually irrelevant and that can only be good for college football. The only people the polls will matter to then is the losers of their conference and G5 teams.
IAWTP, and the BIG12 should also be required to have a playoff. Notre Dame should also be required to join a conference for inclusion in the championship series. It's stupid that they get to play by their own set of rules.

I had no problem with the preseason rankings. I think there was good reason to think Utah lost too much and may take a step back. I think Utah should be ranked higher this week. They earned it by being undefeated, with a strong OOC, and with one of the best performances of the CFB season thus far.

If they fall off so be it but up to this week Utah has been one of the best teams in CFB.

It was a good win but we still have a lot of tough games left, no one's coming out of the Pac 12 undefeated imo

It is what the committee seemed to do last year for the playoff seeding. They did not seem to have trouble reassessing where each team belonged regardless of their previous ranking.

Cy, stop trying to bug everyone.

My opinion: pre season polls are stupid because nobody has any idea about teams at that point, but sort of necessary for hype and making games fun to watch (it's fun to watch ranked teams, even if you know rankings don't mean much early season).

Knowing this, I think voters just need to be a lot less rigid with their rankings from week to week. They've been a lot less rigid the last few years, but they need to be even more so. Each week they should entirely re rank teams on how they feel about them, not just follow the unwritten rule of sliding a team slightly up or down each week unless they lose.
Good post ugli. First good one you have had in while.

You should do it more often

This. Rankings do not matter anymore. If we win every game by 1 pt, then we are national champs.

Let's just go beat Cal now. Can't freaking wait.

Can't believe this hasn't been posted yet:

"We've talked about David and Goliath. This isn't that. This is two giants!"

"Is anyone surprised?"

Love it.

My kids haven't asked for any Oregon clothes this weekend and wanted to wear their Ute clothes to school today. Incredible.
