This reminds me of a favorite quote from Al Bundy.

I'm a pretty big Utah homer, but you make me look like a completely unbias, neutral observer. You're not just a Homer, you're the homiest of homers on the most homerific day of the year in homertown.
 
i don't mind some optimism from time to time. some ute fans can be quite negative. so someone needs to balance it out.
 
Tyler Rawson is a good get for Utah basketball. Only overlooked in high school because he had to share the post with Ryan Andrus, and I know there were quite a few BYU fans who saw American Fork play during those years that thought offering a schollie to Andrus over him was a mistake. Dude's tough, athletic, skilled, long, hustles. Perfect compliment to Collette.

Essentially he is a WCC level player who filled in when Utah was desperate and did a good job given his physical limitations.
 
I liked Reyes as far as a hustle energy guy but not sure why he would take minutes from either Chapman, Kuzma and even Montgomery... well as a 'thanks for coming to help the team when it was down' I guess I kinda understood playing in front of Montgomery. Also Bill Walton seemed to love him but I think because he was from Cali and near where he grew up.

My money is still on Poetle leaving, but I do find it very strange that he hasn't announced yet. There's rumblings that this might not be a slam dunk. From what little I know of his family situation, he's not one of these kids that absolutely feels like he needs to come out for financial reasons. Couple that with the fact that Sabonis did a pretty good job of exposing what Poetle needs to work on to be effective at the next level, and who knows? If he loves his college experience, there's little chance that he comes back and plays next year and hurts his already cemented lottery status.

As far as "what-ifs" go, if by some stroke of luck Poetle were to stay, you add Collette and the Barefield kid at PG and that is a very, very, good Utah basketball team. For the record, I think they'll be better than expected once Collette and Barefield are in the mix.

Poetl is going to be a lottery pick even if he stays till his senior, so I wouldn't blame him for staying. Still a risk if he suffers some kind of career altering injury, but he will never drop out of the lottery if he stays healthy, too good and big.
 
I really hope he leaves. I think it would be best for him and probably the program in the long run. I think there was a legitimate fear of him dropping last year due to poor FT shooting and going to a team where he wouldn't have much of an opportunity. I think that's gone now and he needs to move on to bigger things. He has the opportunity to do play in the greatest league in the world, he'll probably go somewhere where he he will get minutes, and he will get a huge contract. It really isn't going to get much better for him though it could evaporate with one injury.

As far as the program is concerned, getting an under the radar Sophomore from Austria into the lotto surely isn't a bad thing for a programs resume. Poetl getting injured would leave the impression that he was given bad advice by his coaches whether or not it's true. If he stays and Utah does about the same or worse nothing really has been gained as far as perception. We could go further next year but I think everything else outweighs that. If he leaves and we keep it together Larry still looks legit, If we do better he looks fantastic, and if we do slightly worse he gets a lost your best player pass. Lastly, Poetl staying will take valuable development minutes away from Jayce Johnson and likely little if anything will be gained by anyone else. So what's the point?

This is a very strong counter point but I do struggle with your "what's the point" opinion. Remember when college basketball players were staying in college 3 or 4 years, developing their skill set, and entering the NBA as more mature, better players? It made both the NCAA and NBA better products.

It's always in a school's best interests to hold onto as many good prospects as possible. With the Reyes transfer, there's minutes available for Jayce Johnson to develop regardless if Poetle stays or goes. Again, you raise many good points but I think it's silly to actually believe that Utah doesn't get a huge bump by him staying.
 
There are pro's and con's. But how often can you have a realistic potential Wooden Award winner on the team? Of course you want him to stay as long as possible. Either way I'll trust he'll make the right decision for himself, he seems like a bright kid.
