Official UofU homer thread

Still a risk if he suffers some kind of career altering injury.

This is a huge factor, IMO. There is always the possibility (however remote) that he will suffer some devastating injury after deferring his payday to gain a little more experience.

I'd love to see him stay, but think he would be crazy to do so.

Utah's passing game has never been this good in the PAC-12. Cox looked very good today.

Our WR's still suck, but getting better.

We will be a good, good team this fall. 9+ wins is about right.

Sorry all you BYU homers on this thread. Start getting your excuses ready, and start planning your "wait until next year" dialogue.

You aren't going to win this fall.

We've won 5 in a row. This team is as good as any of the last five. You guys are switching to under center, with two QB's who have never played under center. That's a HUGE adjustment. Oh, and your OC has never coached any level of college football.

You are switching to a 4-3 defense with LB's moving to DE = undersized DE's. You are switching to a man coverage with CB's who have never done that. Oh, and your DC has never been a DC before.

We scored 35 pts in 7 mins in December.

I won't need an excuse. Bronco is a drastically underrated coach as is Anae. You guys will miss those two a lot more than you think.

Like I said, you're probably right. But as a die hard fan, I will always believe there is that chance.

The Bronco thing is an entirely different conversation. Is he a good coach? Absolutely. Was his shtick old? Absolutely. Was he the right hire at the time? Absolutely. Was he holding the program back? To be determined. My personal belief is yes.

The Bronco discussion is interesting. He was a contradiction. On the one hand, he was a great recruiter. He was able to land 2-3 four star kids every year. Utah hasn't been able to do that until this year (BTW, how great was Utah's class? Bolles, Tupai,
Luafatasaga...we are headed in the right direction).

On the other hand, he was a terrible recruiter because he wasn't able to sign depth. Too many "clean" two star kids.

As a defensive coach, he was brilliant. That being said his DC hires...were head scratchers. BUT, is that due to Bronco's ability to hire or lack of money for a real DC?

I'm curious to see how he does in Virginia.

I think BYU's staff could be really good someday. There is potential there. That being said, they are so inexperienced all over the field. From coaching to scheme, they all have zero experience. This year could be really rough for BYU.

I was ready to move on from Bronco. That may bite us on the ***, but I don't think so.

I'm excited as hell with this new staff. More excited than I've been in years. But it may be a long season. It's a tough schedule, no matter the coach, and we have a bunch of newbies who show promise.

It is an exciting coaching staff with a ton of potential. If I were a BYU fan, I'd be ecstatic with 7 wins.

My first "test" for this staff wouldn't be this season. It would be recruiting. Can they get another class in the 50's after a tough year? If they can, that will be a great sign.

Although I see a BYU win as highly unlikely, it certainly is possible. I think BYU has a potentially dangerous offense and has every reason to be up for this game. They really have nothing to lose. If Utah wins, well... that's what was supposed to happen. No big whoop. BYU is playing with house money.

If BYU wins, it's because they wanted it a LOT more. If Utah has any semblance of focus, they will win.

So I guess the excuse would be... BYU played better.

I shouldn't be surprised at this point, but I can't believe how many BYU fans disregard their coaching staffs complete lack of experience heading into next year. Kalani and Co were indeed the right hires, but when you build a staff that is that green, growing pains are going to follow. It's the absolute greenest coaching staff I can ever remember seeing at that level of football. If BYU reaches 7 wins, I'd take that and smile if I'm a BYU fan.

I think BYU and its staff will go on to do great things but I'm extremely comfortable with Whittingham and his staff having a huge advantage heading into that game. Kalani will lessen the gap between the two programs, but it's not going to look that way in week 2 next season.

I've felt this way from the second they hired Kalani. There's obvious excitement following the hire and I'm sure that carried over into recruiting. If BYU has a .500 year this year and for the sake of argument, Utah has another 9 or 10 win season, can BYU weather the storm? Especially with in-state kids? While I like the hire, I think BYU is in a precarious spot. You just lost a guy who had been winning at an impressive clip. Those win totals aren't super easy to replicate and coupled with an increasingly tougher schedule, can Kalani keep winning on recruits if he puts up a few consecutive 5, 6, or 7 win seasons?

Excited to see what Jayce Johnson can do but those are some giant shoes to fill

who's our go to player next year? kuzma?

We will be so much more talented next year. Kuzma will be better. Bonham will be better. Barefield will be an upgrade. With Johnson, Collette, Rawson and Kuzma will be better than Poeltl and Kuzma and Reyes. I think Chapman can replicate what Loveridge did for us.

Barefield is looking to get a hardship waiver that will let him play the whole season next year. If Ogbe can play, he will be an upgrade over Tucker.

Taylor < Barefield
Bonham < a year older Bonham
Loveridge = Chapman
Kuzma < a year older Kuzma
Poeltl> Johnson/Collette/Rawson

Tucker < Ogbe (hopefully)
Reyes < Collette/Rawson

We will be more talented next year. It's exciting.

Devon Daniels could be a real nice player for years to come for the Utes.Love his athleticism and defensive intensity.

Last year we had two players with NBA potential: Poeltl and Kuzma.

This year we will have Barefield, Daniels, Kuzma and Johnson.

While Poeltl was amazing, we will be more talented this fall.

Cox was fantastic today. If he stays healthy, we will be better than last year. Get excited Ute fans.
